Intriguing drama that takes some watching, it builds rather slowly: Argue begins as a typical white-trash cop, but doesn't stay that way. A typically striking Carides begins as a young policewoman on the fast road to success - but she doesn't stay that way either. And the romance occurs not between them, but (surprising- ly) between Argue and his Aboriginal convict. It's an intriguing character study that is not quite pulled off by
director Bennett, although the surprise ending is indeed a surprise, and probably lifts the film a notch or two.
It's by no means a pleasant film to watch, but it's probably an important one, if you're at all interested in
Australian cinematic culture. Rating: 6/10
