Los Angeles — Hollywood has more tricks in its bag than ever with digital 3-D and other new film tools. Yet as the images on screen get bigger and better, movie crowds keep shrinking – down to a 16-year low as 2011's film lineup fell well short of studios' record expectations.
Through New Year's Eve on Saturday, projected domestic revenues for the year stand at $10.2 billion, down 3.5 percent from 2010's, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com. Taking higher ticket prices into account, movie attendance is off even more, with an estimated 1.28 billion tickets sold, a 4.4 percent decline and the smallest movie audience since 1995, when admissions totaled 1.26 billion.
Just what has put the movie business in the dumps is anyone's guess – though safe bets include the tight economy, rising ticket prices, backlash against parades of sequels or remakes, and an almost-limitless inventory of portable and at-home gadgetry to occupy people's time.

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!
Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.
Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree, »

On the eve of the online release of the first trailer for director Ridley Scott's highly anticipated new sci-fi movie, Prometheus, 20th Century Fox has given us two new promotional items to keep us in suspense and salivating for more.
A new still image from the movie has been released that features Michael Fassbender as David, an android in the mold of characters like Ash (Ian Holm) and Bishop (Lance Henriksen) from Alien and Aliens, respectively. What David is looking at to make him gaze in wonder is anyone's guess, but we know that it is not a xenomorph. And, the third and final "countdown" preview clip of the trailer has also been released, which includes more commentary from Scott — "The surprise is in the story. It's all about everything." — and a few snippets of never-before-seen footage.
Next Showing: Prometheus opens June 8

Back for their third year we are proud to present the annual HeyUGuys movie awards – The Truffles.
At the end of each year our wonderful team of writers like to round up the various movieland highs and lows into our own unique categories, to reward the diverse, the challenging and the downright lovely and both tar and feather the cinematic outcasts which offended, disgusted and just plain irritated us.
It has been a tremendous year with some intriguing debuts and some howling missteps from seasonal filmmakers. We had planets colliding, blocks attacked, apes rising and the usual spew of remakes, sequels, prequels and the rest.
Here’s our take on the filmic landscape after a whole year of 2011.
First up on stage…

Here's the first teaser poster for Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus,' starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Logan Marshall-Green and Patrick Wilson.
'Prometheus' opens June 8 2012 in the Us, 1 June 2012 for Ireland and the UK.
Update: Filmophilia scored a pretty cool interview with Ridley Scott highlights from their discussion which include a definitive answer on H.R. Giger involvement in 'Prometheus,' whether or not the original "Alien" makes an appearance and hints about how important the Space Jockey is.
On the lack of a "direct link" between Prometheus and the "Alien" films:

As we have entered the last two weeks of the year marketing execs are banking on our attention on being looking forward to what is to come in 2012, rather than looking back at the films we have already seen this year. We’ve just witnessed The Dark Knight Rises official trailer launch yesterday and we already know the first teaser trailer for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will hit later today.
Now comes word that 20th Century Fox will launch the trailer for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi film Prometheus in U.S. theaters starting from tonight (Tuesday) at 7pm, attached to David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The trailer is expected to be available online at the Apple site also.
There’s even a new trailer for the trailer that Fox have released below;

The first official teaser poster for "Prometheus" does just what it was intended to do - tease - while giving us the foreboding tagline "The Search For Our Beginning Could Lead To Our End". Uh-oh... Visually, the new one-sheet is somewhat reminiscent of the poster for "Alien" - which Scott also directed and which "Prometheus" will function as something of a prequel to (just how much it will tie in to the former remains to be seen) - but ironically, it's actually more evocative of the DVD cover for "Aliens" director James Cameron's 1989 submarine sci-fi "The Abyss" Special Edition, with its »

Clip joint comes right back at you with a snappy selection of cinema's wittiest ripostes and most scathing putdowns
Like a slam dunk smash in tennis, or a sudden knockout in boxing, the ability to come up with a scathingly witty riposte to a rhetorical attack – to conjure a killer comeback – results in an instant win. The old saying about sticks and stones is all wrong: an acerbic remark can do more damage than a right hook, and the sting from an incisive jibe can last a lifetime.
The French use the term 'L'esprit de l'escalier' ('staircase wit') to describe the agony of coming up with a comeback when it's just too late. Of course, ever since the dawn of the 'talkies', movie stars have relied on screenwriters to supply them with urbane repartee, and a film without snappy dialogue would be about as much fun as an alcohol-free martini. »

What is a Space Jockey? Well we don't know what a Space Jockey is. Well, not really. What we know is this, in the original Alien film Sigourney Weaver and the rest of the crew board an Alien spaceship that has gone through some trauma. They find the fossilized remains of a gigantic and mysterious creature, which fans later nicknamed the Space Jockey. One of the key features is that this Space Jockey is found sitting in an enormous chair and it's chest has been ruptured. We can assume based on watching the Aliens lay eggs in their hosts and bursting from the chests, that this is the fate of that mysterious Space Jockey. And below are images that look very familiar to that scene. Photos Courtesy of avpgalaxy.net Prometheus Cast: Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), Captain Janek (Idris Elba), Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green), Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender »

After journeying into the darkness with The Descent, director Neil Marshall is heading back to horror for a more conventional slasher film from CBS Films. Deadline reports Marshall is now in early talks to directing Hellfest, a film following a costumed killer who systematically slaughters the unsuspecting visitors who come to a theme park on Halloween night. Sounds like a really violent Goosebumps adaptation if you ask me, and the idea is to launch yet another horror franchise with a killer that could very well join the ranks of Jason Vorhees, Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers as ruthless killers who never seem to go away. More below! The good news is that "The Walking Dead" and Aliens producer Gale Anne Hurd is behind the project with freshman writers William Penick and Chris Sey writing the script. Perhaps if the film has a fresh approach to the slasher genre, then we might »
