Bachchan vs. Bachchan
Peter_Young18 September 2010
In the 1980s, Amitabh Bachchan starred in several movies, most of which were action films and most of which I personally disliked despite being his fan. Aakhree Raasta is actually one of the better action movies he appeared in at that time mainly because of its well-written script and of course his own presence. The movie does have some typical action scenes and an unrealistic portrayal of corruptness and injustice, but the entire revenge track is entertaining and is interesting to watch. One has to remember that while the movie tries to show substance by portraying one man's pain, it is still a masala movie which in general is not to be taken seriously.

This is the story of David, whose young wife was raped by a corrupt politician, committed suicide, and David himself was accused of murdering her and got jailed for 24 years. As he gets freed, he is determined to take revenge on the three men who are responsible for his imprisonment: the rapist, a police inspector, and a doctor, all of whom had testified against him in court. But a young police inspector is there to try to stop him, his name is Vijay, and he is actually his son, who never knew of his real father's existence, being brought up by David's best friend Mahesh.

Where melodrama and romance go, the movie is a bit lacking and overdone though it has its moments. I mostly liked the sequences showing the interaction between the old Bachchan, namely David, and Sridevi's Vinita, who plays his son's love interest. There was something moving in it, which showed his humanity and her understanding of his longstanding pain. But the movie mostly works as an action thriller. The way David plans to kill all three of his enemies is fantastically done, and the many scenes of suspense are well handled, creating an entertaining picture for the family.

The main reason the film works is without a doubt Amitabh Bachchan's performance. He plays the two characters very differently which makes it difficult to believe that it is actually the same person. The one who gives him full scope to win is the David character. He is totally convincing while playing a fifty plus-year-old man and is likable and moving. Sridevi is very funny as Vinita, though sadly her voice is dubbed (but let it be, the dubbing artist is none other than the great Rekha, and she does it excellently). Anupam Kher also provides some comic relief, and Jaya Pradha does her brief role well.

The film's ending is excellent and some of the songs are nice, particularly "Gori Ka Saajan". Aakhree Raasta is not a particularly great movie, but it is an enjoyable one, mainly watchable for Bachchan's memorable performance.

Revenge at its Fullest !
Umar Mansoor Bajwa21 January 2009
Amitabh has done a good job, in the father role (David), although he is shown aged and with a rugged beard. Amitabh always outperforms in angry, emotionally charged and frantically suspenseful roles. While portraying anguished roles in tough situations ridden with crises and brazen suspense, Amitabh is second to none.

His dialogue delivery and screen presence is a feast for the eyes when he utters the deep rooted words with stoic vengeance bursting from his moist smoldering eyes. He has always excelled in melodramatic and angry scenes which happens to be the culmination of his acting prowess.

With Dewaar, Sholay, Shakti and Kabhi Kabhi(to a lessor extent), this movie qualifies to be a must see picture, with all the suspense which would defy Alfred Hitchcock's effects and all the melodrama which would overshadow the skills of William Wyler.

Magic from a magician

Warning: Spoilers
Aankri Raasta was a Hindi remake of a south hit starring Kamal Hassan in the double lead, but this film was different it had Amitabh Bachchan as the protagonist and the antagonist. It starts showing the life of a Simpleton Chiristian fellow David (Bachchan) who is shown getting married. He lives a happy domestic life with his wife and young baby and devotes his life in the campaigning of his local party. The leader of the party however is a snidy and corrupt politician (Amrapukar) who has his eyes on Davids wife Mary (Jaya Pradha). He rapes her during a campaign stunt which leads to her suicide, subsequently he frames David for her murder.

Davids friend played Mahesh (Kher) volunteers to takes care of his baby while hes in jail, on a visit Kher is told by David to raise his son a deadly criminal who is feared by the world by all means possible. All this barely into an hour! What follows is a acting masterclass from Bachchan he plays the role of David and Vijay with remarkable ease. The support cast is very good, and the story is well paced to keep you interested. I've seen all of Bachchan's double starrers and I regard this to be the jewel in his crown. The are many scenes which are executed surprisingly well given the technology and time the film was made.

But without doubt this film belongs to Amitabhs amazing versatility between David and Vijay. A must see.

Powerful Melodrama That Will Make You Not Shy at All !
elshikh430 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Some voices said that this was the last best thing we received from the first (Amitabh Bachchan), before the short retirement of the 1990s, and the chain of flops after, then the return with the white hair and the father role. Actually back then, in 1986, for most of us in Egypt, (Bachchan) wasn't the best of the Indian cinema, No, he was the Indian cinema, and to tell you the truth, most of his movies at the moment, for what they were, they were masterpieces.

Here, I just can't hold my admiration for this script; it was exceptional. It achieves all what the formula needs, sanely too. There were some action, clever melodrama, hot characters, and smart conflict between law and vigilantism. In fact, it doesn't complete without political satire. Yes, it's another revenge story to join the huge amount of Indian movies that deal with that, but it ranks respectfully on the top of the pyramid.

It's so touching and compact, however with some weak points: it was kind of vague did (Anupam Kher) involve in the crime of rape or not?, how (Bachchan) learned to be that genius planner as a criminal?, where is the train which was big part of the second assassination?, or how (Kher) speaks out the father's entire hidden history to his disguised son all at once so easily!, and the most serious of them all: (Bachchan), as the son, knew the awful truth near the end and, in despite of that, he continues guarding the one who rapped his mother and jailed wrongfully his father?? That was totally provocative and not convincing. Actually, that weakened the finale effect violently.

Moreover, the intro of (Vijay/Bachchan) where he smashes the doors by his feet, and hits the whole gang all by himself to witness them all fly by his fist saying: "I Hate Criminals!", it wasn't the intro of inspector Vijay, it was more like the intro of (Amitabh Bachchan)! Also (Anupam Kher)'s comic moments were unnecessary.

On the other hand, observe some intense scenes just like the first meeting between the father and his son in English (great stuff), some truly sensitive moment like the one in which the son removes sands over his mom's grave and wipes out her tears in the same time; what a wonderful moment of "cinema" that was. And the perfect flashbacks to regain the past and feel its domination.

(K. Bhagyaraja) was more brilliant as its writer more than its director. Certainly as the director he managed to make it nicely and sedately with prudent editing and big cadres to embody the mightiness of the events and the agony of the lead, but he lacked stronger force to push it higher as it missed some refulgence. For instance, he totally mastered the last meeting between the father and the son at the cemetery, before the climatic facing at the end, but maybe he didn't master the whole movie as distinguished as this. In brief, I felt that nearly everything was less skillful than the writing.

(Bachchan) pulled it off strongly through the 2 roles that he played. Though the movie provided him with 2 good characters, but he suffered from a bit of manipulation in the script that decreased some of the creditability. It's not the best of (Bachchan), but it's definitely one of the best scripts for a movie that he was in, and one of his best performances as a real actor. It remains as one movie with special sad personality amongst his entire legacy.

It wouldn't be fair to not mention its most memorable line, where (Bachchan) as the father came out of jail to discover that his friend, who let his son with to bring up as a criminal, brought him up as a police officer, he said in anguish: "I gave you a lamp to light up my life, and you burned me to light up yours!".

Even if you thought that you've seen it all before, and despite its own weakness, it is impressive work. Sometimes we're too shy to admit that melodrama works, but it does, and (Aakhree Raasta) is nearly a good example for that.

One of the best Amitabh films of 80s
silvan-desouza28 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Amitabh had ventured into politics and hence lesser films were releasing, Aakhree Raasta(1986) was the last film to release before Shaheenshah(1988). It is a remake of the 1984 Tamil film Oru Kaidhiyin Diary The film had Amitabh play father and son yet again after ADAALAT, DESH PREMEE, MAHAAN.etc. It starts off with young Amitabh Bachchan with a moustache who helps politicians by having campaigns in their name but his wife Jaya Pradha is raped by some evil politicians and he is framed and sentenced for jail. After many years he is released only to realise his son is now an inspector. The film has many great dramatic scenes between the father and son especially their first encounter where the older Bachchan speaks in English, there are some cinematic liberties like the ease at which Amitabh kills people but that is okay. The film however has great dramatic scenes, good chases too Maybe some flaws scriptwise but otherwise a good film

Direction by K Bhagyaraj is good Music is good, most songs are sung by Mohammad Aziz, Gori Ka Saajan is a good song, while other songs are good too

Amitabh Bachchan plays both the roles superbly, though he looks a lil older to play 25 something Vijay, yet he is superb, He was in his 40s during this film and does look wrinkled and out of shape as Vijay. Sridevi is decent, her voice like her earlier films is dubbed, this time by Rekha. Jaya Pradha is okay in a small role, Sadashiv Amrapurkar is good, Dalip Tahil, Bharat Kapoor leave a mark, Om Shivpuri is as usual, Anupam Kher though younger then Bachchan in real life(he was about 31 in the film) does his job well, at times he does overdo it rest are okay.

A great film with his greatest performance
akthar_c8 February 2003
When Amitabh did the film Shakti with Dilip Kumar, it was the passing of the torch from the previous champion to the reigning champion. People spoke of how the old master had outdone the new champion with his performance. 14 years later we were to see an older Amitabh with the role reversed. Who would be the actor to reprise the role of the young upstart? Step forward... Amitabh!!! The performances given by Amitabh in the dual role are better than the performances given by Amitabh and Dilip in Shakti.

I watched the entire film with a tear in my eye. When you put yourself in the father's position what would you do? Or as the son, could you really follow duty given the circumstances? I know that I couldn't...

This film is very well made and performances are strong. If I was asked to recommend a film to show a great performance from Amitabh, this would be it. I would recommend this film over Sholay, Deewar and even my all time favourite Amitabh movie... Agneepath. Just get hold of a copy of this film and see a master of cinema give a devastating performance.

Brilliant...Amitabh at his Best
Li_8510 June 2006
Aakhree Raasta is a basic story about revenge. 25 years After being released from prison for the Rape of his wife that he did not commit. Amitabh goes on a quest of Revenge on the three men responsible. Stopping him from these murders and threats are his very own son. His son also played by Amitabh Bachchan is not aware that this man who has threatened to kill these 3 mens is actually his father. This is an enjoyable Police action drama. The older Amitabh delivers a very powerful performance as the emotionally angry old man, hungry for revenge. The movie also Stars the very Talented Sri devi, who was the Top actress at the time. The films weakness would be some of the unnecessary flashbacks and slow pacing. The movie is almost 3 hours long and could do with a lot of editing. The movie still succeeds in entertaining. Just Another Amitabh Classic not to be missed.

One of the best Bollywood movie of 80s
nadeemakht200030 May 2023
This film was not only one of the best movie of Amitabh Bachchan but also of Bollywood film industriy released in 80s. Film was a remake of tamil film Oru Kaidhiyin Diary starring Kamal haasan but it is one film where remake was better than original. Hindi remake has better execution of script and also has impressive dialogues by Rahi masoom raza. Climax of movie is also different from original and better. As it was directed by the screenplay writer of original movie, probably he corrected some mistakes of his own script and added few scene with good dialogues. Each and every dialogue of movie is impressive like one other Hindi film Sholay. Film is a revenge drama in which an old man released from jail after 24 yrs for a crime he didn't committed takes revenge on the people responsible for murder and rape of his wife and falsely implicating him.in all those years he thought of taking revenge with the help of his son who has been brought up by his close friend and who has promised to make him a dreaded criminal but upon his release he found out that his friend has betrayed him and his son is now a police officer. Now he has no option but to execute revenge himself and both father and his son are standing on the opposite sides of law.

The Multi-talented Amitabh Bachchan.
sauravjoshi8518 June 2023
Aakhree Raasta is a crime drama film written and directed by K. Bhagyaraj. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Prada, Late Sridevi, Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil, Bharat Kapoor and Sadashiv Amrapurkar.

A man is falsely accused of his wife's murder and imprisoned. When he sets out to seek revenge, he finds a police officer on his trail who turns out to be his own son.

This is one of the biggest hits of 80s and the one of major reason is Amitabh Bachchan and this film should be considered as one of his underrated film in terms of his acting particularly the older version in which he was very much impressive.

The plot of the film is good and the execution is also good. The film despite of it's length which is close to three hours keeps you engrossed and nowhere it's felt that the film is derailing from it's path. This film is a revenge drama and the best part of the film is that romantic scenes are kept very limited in the film due to which the pace and momentum of film is never gets disturbed.

Acting is superb and apart from Amitabh Bachchan almost everyone was equally impressive in their respective character be it Jaya Prada, Sridevi, Sadashiv Amrapurkar or Anupam kher who also gives some comic relief and was stupendous in his character.

Music and BGM are good and song like 'Gori ka Sajan" is still very popular. Screenplay of the film is fast and gripping and climax of the film is excellent.

The action scenes are choreographed very well and the way Old Amitabh takes his revenge is been superbly shown. The emotional scene between Old Amitabh and Sridevi is impressive and displays how multidimensional actor Amitabh is as he is also romancing Sridevi in his younger version but still you'll feel as the father of Amitabh is on screen speaking with her. A film mix of lots of emotion with drama, action and some comedy.

A must watch film for all the Amitabh fans.
