James Bond 007: revisiting Live And Let Die

28 March 2015 7:22 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Roger Moore takes over as James Bond 007 for Live And Let Die. And it might just be his best Bond outing...

This is the one where Bond does Blaxploitation. It's Roger’s debut. The One with All the Voodoo. Live And Let Die is memorable for numerous reasons. Great villains, the super-hot Solitaire, crocodiles and a distinct otherworldly flavour grant the film memorability: no small achievement when you’re the eighth child of 23. It’s nearly a classic, and certainly one of Moore’s best, but the final half hour falls a bit flat. Switch off after Bond’s Crocodile Dundee moment, just before the looooooooong boat chase. Avoid if easily offended by dubious racial politics. And sexual politics for that matter – but with Bond that’s kind of a given.

The Villain: Both ‘two-bit Island diplomat’ and Harlem gangster, Dr Kananga is a fine enemy for Moore to cut his teeth on. »

Cringe: 13 movies with blatantly homophobic scenes

26 March 2015 12:06 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The new comedy "Get Hard" stars Kevin Hart as an unlikely coach who trains Will Ferrell for a stint in prison. In one scene, Hart insists that Ferrell go to a top La brunch spot and give oral sex to a random patron in the bathroom to learn -- I guess? -- the mechanics of prison rape. Yes, this movie equates consensual gay sexual activity with actual rape. Cut to Will Ferrell in a restaurant bathroom gagging at the sight of a penis for the amusement of a multiplex audience. Could it be the most homophobic scene in a comedy of the past ten years? It's certainly a candidate. To commemorate this weirdly ignorant movie, we've compiled a list: movies with homophobic scenes so blatant, they made us shudder. Sometimes a movie reeks of homophobia (See: that ol' heart-warmer "Cruising") and sometimes it's just a couple of moments in a »

Stephen Beresford interview: looking back at Pride

6 March 2015 8:41 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

The BAFTA award-winning writer of Pride looks back at the release of the film, its impact, and Pride: The Musical.

Regular readers of this site will know how strongly we feel about the excellent movie Pride, which we ranked as one of our firm favourites of 2014. We spoke to writer Stephen Beresford ahead of its release, and since then, he's picked up a BAFTA for his work on the movie.

We caught up with him for a chat looking back at the last six months, as Pride arrives on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK...

I wanted to catch up with you to get the 'during' and 'after' story for Pride, as we spoke originally just before it's release.

You have that lovely line in the film - "to find out you had a friend you never knew existed, well that's the best feeling in the world". This film »
