Paul Hogan kicks back in his homeland

28 December 2009 8:45 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Paul Hogan and his wife Linda Kozlowski have turned up in his native Australia for the holiday season. Hogan's appearance in photos drew comments about age having caught up with him. The actor is 70, while Linda, an American with whom he met on the set of Crocodile Dundee in 1986, is 51. They have a 10-year-old son, Chance. A Sydney newspaper said Hoges appeared 'exhausted' after a busy and stressful year. Hogan has long been based in the Us along with business partner John Cornell. The pair are embroiled in a battle with the Australian taxman over allegations of funnelling money to offshore havens. Holidaying in Byron Bay in New South Wales, Hogan treated his »

Taylor Lautner to star in 'Cancun': Spring break and drug cartels, eh?

18 December 2009 6:53 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

We're starting to get a hint of what post-Twilight careers might look like for the various costars. Ashley Greene seems headed for damsel-in-distress territory. Kellan Lutz will reportedly be the new hunk of beefcake in Calvin Klein underwear ads. (Fitting I think, since he never actually talks much in the movies. Are we allowed to say that? Too soon?) And according to the news yesterday, Lautner will be starring in a thriller called Cancun, the first movie from his own production company — founded with his father Dan Lautner — partnered with Summit Entertainment. In it, he'll play a misfit college kid »

Casting the news: The Blizzard of Oz, the Australian iceberg disaster movie

11 December 2009 5:15 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This week we need your help producing the big-screen version of the smackdown between one big island and one mammoth iceberg

A crowd of suntanned Australians stand at Sydney harbour. As is traditional, they are having a barbecue. Someone has set up a cricket wicket in the middle of the road. The mood is a happy one. Then, all of a sudden, the light disappears from the sky. Men and women alike turn round to find a 50bn-tonne iceberg where the sun once was. This is B17B, the superberg, and it's headed right for them, bringing with it a nightmare microclimate: cyclones filled with swirling tinnies, raining wombats and vicious blizzards (to enable the title).

The latest Guardian/film/films production – working title: The Blizzard of Oz – promises to take the disaster movie where it's never been before. Australia. Inspired by latest events, we plan to tell a tale »

Cameron Begged For Worthington To Star In Avatar

25 November 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

James Cameron had to lobby for Sam Worthington to star in Avatar after studio bosses decided the actor's Australian accent was too heavy for him to take on the lead role.

The director knew he wanted Worthington to play Jake Sully, a paraplegic ex-marine, after his first audition in 2007 - but Fox executives were nervous about casting a relative unknown in the big-budget blockbuster.

Cameron tells Total Film magazine, "His accent was thicker than Crocodile Dundee. But we got along right from the get-go. In my heart, Sam already had the part, but we had to convince Fox that he could play the part."

The Titanic filmmaker ordered Worthington to take lessons with a dialogue coach - and he secured the role in his second audition.

Cameron adds, "We ultimately ended up doing a screen test that convinced them utterly that he was the guy. But I had lobbied for him very strongly from the beginning. I just thought he had something that I hadn't seen before in a guy of that age. The voice, the demeanour. It was a pretty big leap - there's a big price tag hanging from this movie and to put it all on the shoulder of this guy who was relatively unknown... The studio was nervous about that, but then to their credit they (eventually) saw what I saw." »

Final snub for 'Australia' from Oz Oscars

30 October 2009 6:59 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

"Australia" -- the second-highest-grossing homegrown film in Oz history after "Crocodile Dundee" -- failed to land a best picture nod at the AFI Awards. This snub is even more pronounced given that the Australian Film Institute expanded the category to six films from the usual four. "Australia" stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman were also left off the list of nominations as was helmer Baz Luhrmann. However, Brandon Walters did land a supporting actor nod as well as a bid for best young actor. In that latter category, he faces off against, among others, Marissa Gibson and Rowan McNamara, the leads of best pic contender "Samson and Delilah." That love story about two Aboriginal teenagers »

Hogan To Appeal Release Of Private Tax Documents

2 October 2009 5:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Australian actor Paul Hogan has won the right to appeal against the public release of personal legal documents as part of his ongoing tax case.

The Crocodile Dundee star is currently under investigation by the Australian Crime Commission amid allegations he sent money into tax havens abroad.

Hogan challenged a June decision to release his private documents relating to the multi-million dollar fraud case, and an attorney representing media companies Fairfax and News Limited was in court on Friday to contest the application.

The lawyer argued the publication ban should be lifted as there is great public interest in the papers.

But he couldn't convince the three judges at Sydney's High Court, who granted Hogan leave to appeal the decision in what is expected to be a one-day hearing.

Hogan has denied all allegations of fraud. »

The Australian Connection

6 September 2009 5:27 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Glenn here from Stale Popcorn here. Nathaniel is travelling somewhere that has - wait for it - bad internet connection(!!!), which is a horrifying prospect to say the least. He asked myself and some others to keep you occupied.

Nathaniel has been a wee bit lax lately in his coverage of world cinema and so I thought, while he's away, I'd do my bit and spruik it for all its worth. This is actually an early version for a piece I have been planning for my own blog to publish at years end. Sneak Peak!!!

As a member of the "international" film community (doesn't that term sound just a smidgen condescending?) there are many things to be angry about. Whether it is poor distribution tactics (The Hurt Locker is going Direct-to-dvd in Australia) or bad foreign cinema clogging up cinemas that could be reserved for local fare. I, however, have »

Hogan 'slammed for not paying film extras'

18 August 2009 7:51 AM, PDT | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Crocodile Dundee actor Paul Hogan has reportedly caused outrage among extras in his new film by not offering them payment for their work. Residents from Australia's Tamworth and Warrnambool were reportedly happy to appear in Charlie and Boots for free until they discovered that they were entitled to be paid for their time. Extras from other locations, such as members of the Parkes Music and Drama Society, have defended Hogan, saying that they were happy to volunteer in the movie. Member Angie (more) »

Hogan Takes Tax Fight To The High Court

24 June 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan has refused to back down in his battle with Australian tax authorities - he has vowed to take his fight to keep his finances private to the country's High Court.

The Australian actor, who lives in California, has been subjected to a five-year investigation into his accounts amid accusations he channelled millions of dollars into offshore tax havens.

The Australian Crime Commission launched a probe amid claims of a "scheme or conspiracy" between Hogan and his financial adviser, Tony Stewart, to distort his residency status to avoid paying tax.

Hogan, who has denied the accusations, is now fighting the commission's bid to make his financial records public.

Last year an Australian Federal Court judge made a ruling that would have allowed the documents to be released, and Hogan's legal challenge to the decision was rejected at a hearing on Friday.

Hogan's lawyers have now vowed to take their appeal to the High Court, meaning the documents will not be released until the second appeal is concluded.

Hogan's attorney, Francois Kunc, insists the long process of taking the case to the country's highest legal authority will not "diminish" the public interest, warning the court, "Pandora's box will have been opened and no one will be able to get Pandora back in."

The Australian Crime Commission has refused to comment on whether the probe into Hogan's tax affairs is ongoing. »
