Own Picks Up Megachurch Drama From ‘Lost’ Alum

14 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The Oprah Winfrey Network has ordered a megachurch drama straight to series.

“Greenleaf” comes from the mind of writer-producer Craig Wright (“Six Feet Under,” “Lost”) and explores the titular family and its Memphis megachurch, which acts as the center of a community for thousands of predominantly African-American parishioners. Scandals and secrets lie beneath its sprawling surface, however. The series is a multigenerational family drama at heart.

“When I first read the script, I instantly felt an affinity for the characters and loved Craig’s creative vision for a fictional drama on an epic scale,” Oprah Winfrey said. “This show is going to be a fun ride and will hopefully have viewers on the edge of their pews week after week.”

Wright was also executive producer for FX’s “Tyrant,” another series following a family with dark secrets.

T.D. Jakes Talk Show Gets Summer Test Run in Heartland Markets

9 July 2015 10:45 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Debmar Mercury has set a summer test run of a talkshow hosted by prominent Dallas pastor T.D. Jakes in four heartland markets.

The talkshow described as a headline-driven topical series will be carried from Aug. 17-Sept. 11 on Tegna stations (formerly known as Gannett Broadcasting) in Dallas, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Cleveland.

Jakes has been flirting with a syndicated talkshow launch for several years. He presides over a 30,000-member mega-church and has become a media personality in the past few years.

“In order to achieve success in daytime talk, you need to have a unique voice that lets you stand out in a crowded field as well as great built-in brand awareness. T.D. Jakes has volumes of both, with the strong potential to eventually break out and attract many new national viewers to network affiliates who are hungry for something different,” said Debmar Mercury presidents Ira Bernstein and Mort Marcus.

Candace Cameron-Bure & Raven Symone Argue Over Lesbian Wedding Cake

Let them eat cake, or not? That's the question that sparked a heated debate between Candace Cameron Bure and Raven-Symone on yesterday’s episode of "The View." The two former child stars discussed a recent incident that involved an Oregon wedding cake company refusing to provide services to a lesbian couple. But was this a decision based on the constitutional right of freedom of association, or was this a prime example of discrimination based on sexual orientation? The former "That’s So Raven" has been an activist for the Lgbt community since 2014, when she told Oprah she was in relationship with a woman. Meet Raven-Symone's Girlfriend -- She's a "Top Model" Alum! "The Oregon law bars businesses from discriminating against sexual orientation, race, disability, age or religion," Symone argued, "and to me, it’s the same exact thing that they did back in the day saying that black people »

A bronze bust of Bill Cosby is being removed from Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park, a spokeswoman for Walt Disney World said, per NBC News. The statue was supposed to come down Tuesday evening after the park closed. The decision to remove the celebrity's statue came after 2005 court documents revealed that Cosby admitted to obtaining Quaaludes with the intent of giving them to women he wanted to have sex with. Cosby also testified that he had given the woman who alleged assault—a Temple University employee— three half-pills of Benadryl. His bronze bust is part of Disney's Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame Plaza at the park. Other statues at the exhibit include Oprah »

Ellen DeGeneres Influenced Gay Rights Views More Than Any Other Celebrity (Study)

30 June 2015 11:42 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Ellen DeGeneres did more to influence Americans’ attitudes about gay rights than any other celebrity or public figure, a new poll by Variety and branding expert Jeetendr Sehdev found.

The daytime host wasn’t the only person who played a key role in shaping hearts and minds. President Barack Obama, who endorsed same-sex marriage during his 2012 re-election bid after initially opposing it, was the second most cited figure, followed by openly gay “Glee” star Jane Lynch and openly gay comedian Rosie O’Donnell. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was the fifth most influential voice on gay rights, the study found. Like Obama, Clinton initially opposed gay marriage before changing her views two years ago.

The results were calculated from a nationwide survey of 2,000 adults between the ages of 18 and 65. Polling was based on a combination of online studies and one-on-one interviews. The study was conducted as part of Variety »

Fox News to Launch Megyn Kelly Newsmaker Specials (Exclusive)

22 June 2015 9:02 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Following her big scoop with the Duggar family earlier this month, Megyn Kelly is landing her own series of primetime specials on Fox News, Variety has learned.

The one-hour shows, which launch early next year, will be similar to the Barbara Walters interviews with world leaders and celebrities that turned the iconic journalist into a mega-star for ABC in the ’80s and ’90s.

Kelly’s specials will focus on newsmakers in politics, sports and Hollywood. Fox News Channel chairman Roger Ailes intends to build each hour around a single sponsor. “Listen, Megyn is so good today that there is no interview I would not want her to do,” Ailes tells Variety.

Kellly’s interview with Joe Bob and Michelle Duggar, which aired during the anchor’s primetime evening show “The Kelly Files” in early June, scored 3.1 million viewers. And as Kelly told Variety in this week’s cover story, she »

How Megyn Kelly Became the New Star of Fox News

22 June 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Megyn Kelly is bucking the conventional wisdom of what it means to be a Fox News anchor. The take-no-prisoners newswoman isn’t afraid to throw hardballs at Republicans. She recently lectured Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul over his penchant for arguing with female reporters. She poked Jeb Bush about whether he would have invaded Iraq in 2003. She cornered Mike Huckabee for saying it was trashy for women to swear in public. Last year, she told Dick Cheney, “History has proven that you got it wrong” on Iraq. On Election Night 2012, she dared to question Karl Rove for claiming that Barack Obama hadn’t won Ohio, and it went viral.

Just as surprisingly, she says she wouldn’t brawl with a certain Democratic presidential candidate if she landed an exclusive with her. “I think Hillary Clinton could handle me — easily,” Kelly says on a recent afternoon in her Manhattan office. “That would be epic television, »

Welcome to Me movie review: the ultimate selfie

A sort of miracle. A black comedy about a not-well woman saving herself is a savage satire on a not-well world that doesn’t realize anything’s wrong. I’m “biast” (pro): love Kristen Wiig

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Everyone wants to be on TV,” Alice Klieg firmly believes, and this is a supposition about our world that is difficult to disprove. It’s also a supposition that is easy to send up… but Welcome to Me does not take that easy road. It takes a uncomfortable road paved with raw, uncensored emotion that is startling for the portrait it creates of the woman at its center — one of the more realistic depictions of mental illness I’ve seen, though I cannot claim to have a lot of direct experience of the particular affliction she is coping with »
