Eddie Murphy, Oprah join Mike Epps in Lee Daniels’ Richard Pryor biopic

31 August 2015 2:23 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The biopic on Richard Pryor lives.

Following years of being put to the side, a biopic on the famed comic is coming by the hands of The Butler and Empire director Lee Daniels. Deadline reported the news on Friday.

The project was originally attached to director Bill Condon with Marlon Wayans starring as Pryor, but that project fell apart with The Weinstein Company revitalizing it when Daniels said he would sign on. Along with Daniels, the film will star Mike Epps as Pryor, Eddie Murphy as Pryor’s father, and Oprah Winfrey as Pryor’s grandmother.

Kate Hudson is also attached to play Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee.

The script will come from Condon and Empire scribe Danny Strong with Daniels aiming to start filming in March once he wraps on the popular Fox series’ second season. This is the first time Murphy has been attached to the project (he »

ABC has yet to line up a permanent replacement for Wolff, who will remain at the helm through the end of September to see the show through the launch of its 19th season with a revamped panel of hosts. Candi Carter, an “Oprah Winfrey Show” alum who recently joined as a consulting producer, will serve as interim showrunner until a successor is named.

Wolff joined “View” last summer after serving as exec producer of MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.” His departure  had been expected after the show endured a rocky first season following the retirement of its founder, Barbara Walters.

Last week, “View” unveiled its host lineup for season 19 — all »

10 Essential Tom Cruise Movies

7 August 2015 4:17 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Like most talented performers who’ve doubled as quintessential movie stars, Tom Cruise doesn’t always get the chance to demonstrate that he can actually act. There’s often just too much Tom Cruise in the way for people to notice, especially when he lets his erratic personal life take center stage. Putting together an “essential” list for such an actor is a bit of a tightrope act, walking the line between crowd pleasing star turns and performances of real substance. That said, here are ten Tom Cruise films that are not to be missed:

Risky Business (1983) – The early 80s were awash in teen sex comedies, most of which have justifiably faded from memory. Then there’s Risky Business, which not only rose above the pack, but made an indelible mark on pop culture history. It wasn’t Tom Cruise’s first movie, but it might as well have been: »

Respect for Tom Cruise

Matthew Lee on his respect for Tom Cruise

Since 2006, Tom Cruise has been reduced to, for lack of a better phrase, a global joke; a quick source for derision, slander, and mockery among the A-List Hollywood performers for the masses to prod at. There was his Jumping the Couch moment on Oprah, the uncomfortable Scientology interview, his termination with Paramount studios, and M:i:iii underperforming at the box office. In short, 2006 was not a good year for the iconic A-Lister.

Despite such set-backs Cruise still produces and stars in critically and financially successful movies, which proves his presence in Hollywood is unscathed. One needs only to look at 2011’s Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which would become Cruise’s highest grossing film to date, or the last few films that have received critical acclaim i.e. Edge of Tomorrow. Further, when one looks at Cruise’s career, one gets a sense that »
