At Christmas time, a heartless businessman wants to evict the residents of an apartment building he owns, he tangles with a resident who just happens to be working as a street Santa. Later a man wearing a Santa suit enters the businessman's office building and kills him. Later someone enters the Santa's apartment and tangles with him. Later three of the businessman's people find him dead. Ben offers to defend the Santa. He suspects that one of the associates is the killer cause a piece of evidence against the Santa was found near the body and he believes who ever broke into the Santa's apartment took it and planted it.

Season 1, Episode 14: The Author

13 January 1987
When a woman in a small town writes a book whose characters are actual people in the town and it becomes a best seller, the press converge on the town to interview them. And some of them threaten the woman. When the local reverend goes to visit her, someone takes a shot at her killing the reverend. The police investigate and it leads them to one of the town's doctors who was depicted in the book as being a druggie who denies it and threatened the woman. Ben comes to defend him and he starts by checking some of the other people depicted in the book but learns none of them have reason to kill her. Later Ben discovers a different motive and suspect for the killing.

Kathy Dawson is a private nurse working for the St. Johns. One night while she was out, the man she was taking care of, Peter St. John, died. When it was determined to be murder, she is the prime suspect. Ben and a woman get into an elevator, at the courthouse, that malfunctions. Ben seems taken by this woman. Ben goes to his arraignment hearing with Kathy Warren and finds out the woman he was tuck with in the elevator is the new A.D.A., Julie March. Kathy Warren hires Ben to defend her, offering her $250,000 engagement ring as a fee. After Lacey St. John tells A.D.A. March that the ring was stolen from their home, Matlock realizes that something isn't right in the St. John house, and that someone is lying to him.

Season 3, Episode 20: The Priest

16 May 1989
A former mobster, Nathan Carlino, is accused of murdering a priest. Alex Winthrop's firm represents the Carlino family and flies from New York to Atlanta to handle the case. Alex, who was introduced near the beginning of season three in a two part episode The Ambassador, meets with Carlino, who requests representation from a more seasoned lawyer. Alex promises to get his good friend, Ben Matlock, to work as his co-counsel. It takes a $20 hot dog to get Ben on board, but once Ben and Michelle start assisting Alex, it becomes clear that this murder was not as open and shut as it appeared. This episode takes some interesting twists along the way.

Prominent attorney Sandra Townsend leads a double life by "playing the field" and living on the edge. She winds up being blackmailed by her boyfriend to stay in the relationship, and he has the compromising pictures to seal the deal. She plots to murder him and frame an innocent bar patron who vowed to get even after her boyfriend throws him out of the nightclub. Ben's assistant, Michelle is given the job of defending the accused, and in the process is reacquainted with old friend, Sandra Townsend. As the sole "witness" to the crime, Townsend must face Michelle in court and challenges her to prove the events happened otherwise.
