For his first dance on "Dancing With the Stars," Jaleel White had us swooning in the aisles over his foxtrot with partner Kym Johnson. Yes, that's right - no Steve Urkel here. This was all Stefan Urquelle.
Both Carrie Ann and Bruno compared Jaleel to legendary actor/dancer Gregory Hines, as Carrie Ann said it felt like she was watching "White Nights" and Bruno just straight-up name-dropped Hines, saying he could not pay Jaleel a higher compliment. Len was similarly complimentary, then dubbed this the best first episode of any season they've ever done.
Jaleel and Kym received a 26 from the judges, tying the highest score for a first episode (set just moments earlier by Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas) with 9s from Carrie and Bruno and an 8 from Len. What do you think, fans? Will you be voting for Jaleel?
Oh, and if you can't get enough of Jaleel White this week, »

ABC Jaleel White and Kym Johnson
Live! On Speakeasy! It’s the 14th-season premiere of “Dancing with the Stars!”
The usual panoply of “DWTS” types – TV stars, sports legends, musicians and people you’ve probably never heard of – will spend the next few weeks and months in dance studios and a ballroom, attempting to win the hearts of three fawning or crotchety judges as well as millions of viewers. Will another football player shuffle off to stardom? Will an unknown capture America’s hearts? »

The documentary “The Ballad Of Genesis & Lady Jaye” hits theaters in New York in limited release this weekend. It’s an utterly fascinating and bizarre (sometimes queasy) look at identity and pandrogny (review later this week) that happens to center around seminal experimental music figure Genesis P-Orridge, of atonal, industrial noisemakers Throbbing Gristle, who went on to form the still-experimental, but more palatable Psychic TV.
The soundtrack album from Sweet Nothing Records hits on March 12th. And while this writer can’t claim to be any kind of Psychic TV expert -- their discography has more than 33 studio albums ranging as far back as 1982, plus over 40 live albums -- one thing this soundtrack album reminds us is that for all their sonic collages, spoken word pieces and multi-media-collective and dada-ist leanings they could bust out a lovely, psychedelic tune in the vein of the Velvet Underground (or more recent example »

Anna Magnani in (what looks like) Luchino Visconti's Bellissima At the end of Giuseppe Tornatore's Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner Cinema Paradiso, small-town projectionist Philippe Noiret has died and the Nuovo Cinema Paradiso has become a pile of rubble. The bratty Italian boy Salvatore Cascio has grown into the classy Frenchman Jacques Perrin (like Noiret, dubbed in Italian), a filmmaker who sits to watch a mysterious reel of film the deceased projectionist had left him. It turns out the reel contains clips from films censored by the prudish local parish priest, whose family values found kisses, embraces, and bare breasts and legs a danger to society. Now, who's doing all that kissing, embracing, and breast/leg-displaying in that film reel? (Please scroll down for the Cinema Paradiso clip.) Here are the ones I recognize: Silvana Mangano and Vittorio Gassman in Giuseppe De Santis' Bitter Rice (1949); Mangano »

It's looking like horror fans have a new best friend in Aspect Film's genre label Chiller Films, which has just inked an international sales agency deal with Tii Ricks' Rage - Midsummer's Eve, which was shot in Finland and the Finnish Arctic Circle.
The film will be introduced to distribution companies for the first time in the European Film Market (Efm) during Berlin's International Film Festival, starting today in Germany. Besides Efm, Rage - Midsummer's Eve will be present in Cannes, London's International Film Festival, and also the American Film Market (Afm) later this year.
"We are delighted to welcome Tii Ricks' Rage - Midsummer's Eve into the Chiller Films fold. Tii and the La Brea Pictures team have crafted a horror flick set in extraordinary circumstances, yet eerily real surroundings: white nights and midnight sun - shot entirely in Finland and the Finnish Arctic Circle", says »

From the Press Release
Just a couple of weeks after the New York Times announced Finland and its beautiful capital city Helsinki to be the second best place to visit in 2012 and after the Brits, once again, voted the Finnish Lapland to be their favorite place to visit during the winter holidays, the principals of American film production company La Brea Pictures release the first teaser trailer for Rage – Midsummer's Eve, a suspense horror film shot entirely in Finland and in the Finnish Arctic Circle.
Daughter of an American father and a Finnish mother, Ms. Tii Ricks (30), originally from Brooklyn, New York, filmed Rage – Midsummer's Eve last summer in the authentic »

Brooklyn, New York native Tii Ricks traveled to the Finnish countryside to craft her upcoming horror outing “Rage: Midsummer’s Eve”, a film that, despite having a plot synopsis and a teaser trailer, is a little hard to figure out. There’s definitely something incredibly sinister going down in the embedded clip, though it’s really hard to determine the source of everyone’s terror. Whatever it is, the kids are trying their best to escape it, which is why everyone is running through the woods at a mad rapid pace. Regardless, the film looks promising, so I’ll definitely keep a close eye on it. Here’s an excerpt from the official press release: A group of American, English and Finnish friends living and studying in Finland decide to spend their last summer holiday together and to visit the Finnish Arctic Circle to experience the “White Nights” when the »
