Another day, another traffic police-themed comedy from director Danny Lee, who seemed to have some kind of obsession with the force. This one's an amiable comedy featuring a good double act from the reliable Kent Cheng alongside Wong Ching. I just came off seeing the latter playing a truly sadistic murderer in MURDERER PURSUES, and here he's totally different - a goofy comic character with heart. The surprise is that he's just as convincing here as he was as the villain in the previous movie.
As with many Hong Kong comedies, COP BUSTERS is essentially a string of sketches which work well placed together. The gags come thick and fast and our bumbling characters mix it up with road offenders and the usual love interests. Where it gets deeper though is in their relationship with an orphaned kid they happen to pick up; the second half thus becomes more family-orientated and romantic, with a melodramatic flourish at the climax.
