The Beavers' basketball coach issues specific guidance on playing against an opposing player with the name "Meechum" on the Cadets basketball team. Meechum was the family name in The Great Santini (1979), which focuses on the son (Ben Meechum) who's a high school basketball player, based on the life of Pat Conroy. This is also a reference to Pat Conroy himself, because in real life, he later played college basketball as a cadet at the Citadel, hence the opposing team's name "Cadets".
