Paul Reubens says the new Pee-Wee movie is still on the way

14 May 2012 1:28 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Pee-wee's Playhouse meant so much to me as a kid. His laugh still makes me giggle. I also demand Pee-Wee style dancing anytime I hear "Tequila". Pee-wee's Big Adventure was the best movie that could have ever been made with the character. Big Top Pee-wee always scared the shit out of me for some reason. I think it had something to do with carnies. I don't know. Anyway, Paul Reubens gave an update on the next movie due to come out. The good news is that it seems to be moving right »

Was Tim Burton Ever A Good Director? (Opinion)

13 May 2012 8:40 PM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

With a title like that, I'm sure to get a lot of hate for even suggesting such a notion. But here's the thing: I loved Tim Burton. He was my absolute favorite director until around 2001. The worlds he created held my attention in a deeper way than other filmmaker's. The oddball and macabre design, along with the melancholy atmosphere, were unlike anything I had seen in movies. It was as fantastical in imagination as any blockbuster, and it felt more ethereal and personal than the "Hollywood" spectacle of a Spielberg or Zemeckis film. He introduced me to ideas of retro kitsch, spooky fringe and proudly holding onto timeless obsessions of your youth. Burton is one of those early influences in my life that made me become a passionate movie lover. I can catch "Beetlejuice" or "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" at any moment on TV and immediately get sucked back into them. »

"Go ahead and scream your head off! We're miles from where anyone can hear you!" Ahh, how I loved Pee-Wee's Big Adventure with it's Rube Goldberg breakfast making machine and it's still funny today. According to a roundtable interview Collider did with Paul Reubens, Judd Apataow will be producing a new Pee-Wee flick, which Reubens co-wrote, and it'll be shooting any day now! Hallelujah!

The Essentials: Tim Burton's 5 Best Films

10 May 2012 12:10 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Tomorrow "Dark Shadows" will hit theaters, the latest gothic entertainment from director Tim Burton and his muse Johnny Depp. And, as per our review and many others, it's sadly another disappointment; another wonderful-looking, empty picture that seems to have been derived from the filmmaker and his star taking on the kind of film that's expected of them, rather than something to push or challenge them.

But once upon a time, Burton was one of the most exciting filmmakers around, a former Disney animator who moved into the live-action world with an enduring family comedy classic, and went on for a nearly-decade-long run of critically acclaimed box-office hits that established him as having one of the most distinctive, unusual voices in Hollywood. With "Dark Shadows" bumming us out this weekend, we've decided to provide an antidote by examining five of the most essential Burton directorial efforts in the filmmaker's career. Disagree? »

27 years ago, Tim Burton directed his first full-length feature film, "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" — since then, he's navigated the streets of Gotham City, climbed down the rabbit hole with Alice and traveled to the depths of Sleepy Hollow. Have Your Say: When Did Tim Burton Jump the Shark?

8 May 2012 6:37 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

The arrival of Tim Burton's Dark Shadows in theatres this week fills me with dread -- and not the good kind. When Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Burton's feature directorial debut, burst on the scene in 1985, it was a blast of fresh air, a kiddie tale cleverly targeted at the demented adolescent yearning of young adults. Burton followed that up with Beetlejuice in 1988, the first full-blown manifestation of what has become his signature style: dark fantasies leavened by childish humor and adorned in sumptuously colorful costumes and production design, accompanied by Danny Elfman, a master of minor-chord musical scoring. To greater or lesser extent, Burton has been reworking the styles, themes, and jokes from Beetlejuice ever since. He rescued Batman from the memory of »

Brooklyn Decker Researches 'Fifty Shades of Grey' In Today's Twitter-Wood

Just got carded when I bought the first two books in the Fifty Shades of Gray series.. What in the world have I gotten myself into...

Brooklyn Decker (@BrooklynDecker) May 1, 2012

By now we're sure you've heard of the "Twilight"-fan-fiction-turned-novel "Fifty Shades of Grey." The S&M tales of savvy businessman Christian Grey and college graduate Anastasia Steele are causing quite a stir as the erotic couple is based on Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.

With a film adaptation in the works, the Internet is buzzing with casting rumors. Maybe we can throw Brooklyn Decker's name into the ring? While the actress is starring in this summer's highly-anticipated "Battleship," she's still relatively up-and-coming and it would be the perfect break-out performance. She even has a shy confidence about her that would work perfectly with the timid Anastasia.

A new trailer for the Tron: Uprising animated series

1 May 2012 11:26 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The 2010 sci-fi sequel Tron: Legacy might not have enjoyed earth-shattering success at the box-office - pulling in just over $400m from a $170m outlay - but that hasn't stopped Disney from pushing forward with their plans to expand the Tron franchise. Development on a third movie has been underway for some time, with David Digilio (Eight Below) signing on to write a screenplay last summer, while Disney Television Animation have also been plugging away at ten-part animated spin-off series, Tron: Uprising, which has just received a full-length trailer ahead of its arrival on TV screens next month.

The series takes place between Tron and Tron: Legacy and has been produced by Grid veterans Sean Baily, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. It features a pretty impressive voice cast led by Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) as the hero Beck, and also includes Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Mandy Moore (Tangled), Paul Reubens »

DVD Blu-Ray: 'Haywire,' 'Living In The Material World,' 'New Year's Eve'

Moviefone's Pick of the Week "Haywire" What's It About? "Ocean's 11" director Steven Soderbergh takes a shot at the action-thriller genre, telling the story of a butt-kicking black ops soldier who is double-crossed on a mission and goes on a path of revenge. See It Because: It's not anything revolutionary in terms of storytelling, but the masterful director has a lot of fun riffing on the action movie staple. What makes "Haywire" stand out is that he loads his cast with great actors like Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender and Michael Douglas. And best of all, the film's tough-as-nails lead is played by the legit Mma champion Gina Carano. Yahoo! Lists the 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die

10 April 2012 11:00 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

It's not easy to put together a top 100 of just about anything, but the folks over at Yahoo! Movies have really thrown down the gauntlet this time with a list of the 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die. In describing the list, they maintain that their goal was to choose the "funniest" movies out there, not necessarily the "best" comedies. With that in mind, you might think they'd stay away from critically acclaimed classics and lean more toward low brow, quick and easy laughfests. But you'd be wrong. There are a lot of classics on this list, everything from The Apartment to Dr. Strangelove to Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times and Buster Keaton's The General. There are also movies on here that aren't really "comedies" per se, such as Pulp Fiction and Martin Scorsese's After Hours. More than anything, this serves as a reminder that what is »

SXSW '12: Mark Mothersbaugh Confirms He's Scoring 'Lego,' Talks Working On Wes Anderson's 'Bottle Rocket' & More

14 March 2012 7:03 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

SXSW is usually an incredibly streamlined and well-organized film festival, with everything working with the smoothness of a Swiss watch. But yesterday must have been an "off" day, as a panel centered around beloved film composer and Devo member Mark Mothersbaugh started about ten minutes late and (for some reason) a retrospective video for Mothersbaugh, produced back in 2004, played for another 20 minutes. Meaning that the tight hour that was allotted for the composer was actually more like 30 minutes. And while we wished it were longer, it was worth sticking around for the stories Mothersbaugh shared.

His early career in Devo was inspired by film technology, he recalled. Mothersbaugh said that he was a student at Kent State and in the same anti-Vietnam protest that claimed the lives of several of his peers, and that Devo was partially a gonzo response to that. But the real crux of the band was formulated a few years later. »

Rock star scores

9 March 2012 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Does the success of Trent Reznor, Clint Mansell and Mark Mothersbaugh suggest that the days of the orchestral soundtrack are numbered?

Two words said it all. Moments after winning a Golden Globe for his score for The Social Network last year, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor tweeted "Holy shit!" Industrial rock singers aren't in the habit of winning Golden Globes for film scores, and certainly not their first one. But the landscape has changed in recent years – and is still doing so, fast. Two cinema releases this week alone have had their scores composed by singers: Sigur Rós' Jónsi has done the honours on Cameron Crowe's We Bought A Zoo, while Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh is responsible for 21 Jump Street.

This is not an entirely new phenomenon: notably, Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler hit big with 1983's Local Hero, and Tim Burton changed Danny Elfman's life »

Pee-Wee Herman Takes 'Top Chef Texas' To The Alamo

There was an element of fun added to this week's "Top Chef: Texas" (Wed., 10 p.m. Est on Bravo) with the addition of Pee-wee Herman to the judge's panel. Unfortunately, he didn't bring Cowboy Curtis along with him for the Texas-sized edition of the venerable cooking series, but he did bring his childlike wonder and perspective, as well as his trademark red Schwinn bicycle.

Herman immediately delighted the five remaining contestants from the first challenge, which had them working with one of his favorite breakfast staples: pancakes. He was such a big fan, he gave each of them the exact same critique. "This is the best pancake I've ever had." Ed's pancake turned out to be just a little best-er as he won the challenge and the $5,000 that went with it.

Film Nerd 2.0: The boys hit the road for 'Pee-Wee's Big Adventure'

There was a period of time there where it seemed like if you chose to show a kid the movie "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure," people might view that as bad parenting or a controversial choice because of some of the real-life misadventures of Paul Reubens. I'm old enough that my first exposure to Paul Reubens and the Pee-Wee Herman character came through the Cheech and Chong movies he appeared in.  I was only ten years old when "Cheech & Chong's Next Movie" came out, so I didn't catch up with it until it showed up on cable a »
