Director: Sean Byrne. Review: Adam Wing. The Loved Ones might sound like a romantic comedy, Sean Byrne’s brutal horror movie even toys with themes of love, obsession and Mr Right, but it’s not long before he throws them into a pit with ravenous hordes of Mr Wrong. Brent all ready has a date for the dance, Lola doesn’t. So when this pretty, yet socially inept young thing asks him to go with her, the warning signs flash a less romantic shade of red. Brent has demons of his own, his father died in car accident six months earlier, and he’s struggling to come to terms with the loss. It’s not like he ridicules the poor girl though, we’re not heading into Carrie territory just yet, but Lola is one messed up chick - just you wait ’til you meet the rest of the family. »
According to popular lore, the romantic film is based on a simple formula: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl again. But that is not true. For the most part, the boys have nothing to do with it. The cliche that actually serves as the infrastructure of the classic romance is that the female lead almost never ends up with the man she was originally supposed to spend the rest of her life with. That has been true ever since Cary Grant starred opposite Rosalind Russell and Katherine Hepburn in The Front Page and The Philadelphia Story, and it runs straight through Notting Hill and The Runaway Bride and Sweet Home Alabama and (500) Days of Summer. Romances are constructed around the idea that love is an obstacle course, but if you keep your nose to the grindstone, the rewards can be immense.
That is actually the theme of every Jane Austen novel, »

The film was slated by critics and shunned by cinemagoers when it was released in 2003, causing it to flop badly - much like Affleck and Lopez's real-life romance.
It was pulled from theatres after just three weeks, earned its stars Razzie Awards and now comes out top in Moviefone.com's new list of of the worst.
