Tinto Brass delivers another of his softcore flicks about liberated Italian women exploring their sexual whims. "Miranda" is probably a lesser film than its predecessor, "The Key," in terms of story, writing and so forth. But that's OK, because it does have Serena Grandi, who if IMDb is to be believed was once voted Italy's sexiest woman.
Plot: Grandi is a war widow who takes several lovers over the course of the film, one for each season of the year. One's a grizzled old diplomat, and another is a hotheaded young entrepreneur. Most of the screen time is devoted to her dalliances with a visiting American soldier, an intense young lad haunted by his war memories. Back at the tavern that Grandi owns, a barman watches her with big puppy-dog eyes.
And, uh, that's about it. It's all a setup just to get Grandi naked repeatedly. And when a woman is that awesomely gorgeous and curvaceous, that's good enough. Boy, is it. Whatta woman. Can't act her way out of a paper bag. But who cares? Great cleavage, sturdy legs, a firm round backside and the '40s fashions hug her figure so nicely. This is what a woman looks like, not those anorexic twigs that Hollywood foists on us.
The post-war Italy that Brass depicts a hedonistic wonderland of wine and women is probably nothing more than fantasy. But that's what makes "Miranda" such a fun movie.
