Storyline

Noel Holcroft is a foreign-born American citizen working in New York City as an architect. In Geneva he meets with a respected Swiss banker who tells him he has been designated to be executor of a huge 4 1/2 billion dollar trust fund designed to make reparations for the war crimes of the Nazis. Holcroft's father, who committed suicide in 1945, was a key Hitler financial advisor who became conscience-stricken about German war atrocities, turned against the Fuehrer, and covertly diverted Nazi funds to a secret Swiss account. Under the terms of the covenant Holcroft must locate the sons of his father's two associates so they can jointly activate their fathers' account. They battle the sinister forces seem to be trying to prevent them from signing the document as it is believed that it will be used to establish a Fourth Reich. Written by duke1029@aol.com

Michael Caine must survive neo-Nazis so that he can use a $4.5 billion fund for good ends
17 January 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Holcroft Covenant" is a very strange movie. It is extremely silly for much of its running time. Michael Caine doesn't take it seriously and plays it jocularly. Some scenes are badly acted. Some characters are very unconvincing. The story line is incoherent. Finally, 80 minutes in, we get quite a good scene in which a neo-nazi reveals himself. The movie starts to gel at that point. But then again it flags and the very last scene wraps it up badly.

I may be liberal in giving it 5/10, but it is surely below par, and it's hard to believe that John Frankenheimer directed what is quite a mess.

Evidently they shot this without having a decent script in hand. The overall level of acting was weak, which might have a number of sources. Certainly the directing might have been the problem, or maybe some were miscast. The first team of supporting actors, so to speak, wasn't in this film, with Michael Lonsdale and Lili Palmer being exceptions.

What you can expect is pretty much confusion for quite awhile as the actors are forced to explain the very far-fetched premise. I have to assume that the book was able to handle this more effectively than the film. After all, it was a best seller. However, this premise makes absolutely no sense because the 3 generals who created the initial fund and the stipulation that it accumulate for 40 years before their heirs could manage it -- these generals had no way of knowing the positions of these heirs at that time. Their plot to resurrect a new dictator could not be managed from the grave.

Caine looks bemused as he waltzes through this mess. The confusion lends itself to another viewing. I still don't know or follow why certain events occurred. If you like such challenges, this picture provides them.

The foreign photography is nice and the interior set design is nice too.
