History has shown us that not every musical hit is unique to the artist. Take Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You." When that catchy tune fell into the hands of the late Whitney Houston, the powerful ballad became an instant success, but many of the people caught humming the melody had no idea a blonde bombshell was the mastermind behind the hit.
Houston's rendition is just one a number of cover songs that eventually became more famous than the originals. We've compiled a list of some of these beloved gems below; let us know which ones surprised you in the comments.
1. "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor (original by Prince/The Family)
O'Connor's breathy song was actually written by "Purple Rain" genius Prince for one of his side projects, The Family. But the Irish songstress was the one whose tears actually brought it to the general public.

Washington — Sometimes, congressmen just want to have fun.
Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., said he wasn't flirting with singer Cyndi Lauper earlier this week when he tweeted to her that he "couldn't believe how hot" she was.
The tweet Tuesday – and its deletion 21 minutes later – were all part of a joke designed to get publicity for a PBS documentary airing next week about the music scene in Memphis, the city Cohen represents in Congress, the lawmaker said Friday at a news conference.
Cohen tweeted to Lauper, "great night, couldn't believe how hot u were. See you again next Tuesday. Try a little tenderness."
Lauper, famous for `80s hits like "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time after Time" and "True Colors," recorded her most recent album, the critically acclaimed "Memphis Blues," in Memphis, and the singer is featured in the PBS film.
The singer, who is married, had no idea Cohen was going to tweet anything, »

Cyndi Lauper took Donald Trump to task over his controversial remarks on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama in a new interview.
Now promoting her new Broadway musical "Kinky Boots," the pop diva -- who appeared on the ninth season of "The Apprentice" in 2010 -- told Next Magazine of Trump, "I felt that what he said about the gay community was disappointing because a lot of gay people work for him. It’s just sad. I thought he could have done better for his country than just go to the lowest common denominator and stir up the crap. It’s our country, it’s not wrestling."
Of Trump's well-publicized opposition to Obama, Lauper added, "If you try and make our president fail, it doesn’t matter who he is, you make our country fail. And if you really are a patriot, if you really give a sh*t about our country, »

Last reality TV I watched The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The relationship between Kyle and Kim is pretty awesome, and Lisa Vanderpump is a hot little mama. She's got a good body, that one! Last concert I went to Pink. She does insane acrobatics, and she's singing upside down while drenched in water. She's so fun to watch. I'm a huge fan. Last karaoke song I sang "Barbie Girl," mainly because I can talk it. I'm not a singing gal. And "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is a staple with me and my best friends, so that one is usually a given. »

Girls just want to have fun -- and that's exactly what Kim Kardashian and La La Vasquez set out to do on Friday, March 1. Hulk Hogan and Cyndi Lauper are both big stars in their own right. Lauper taught us that "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" with her chart topping hits, while Hogan wrestled his way to the top. Although this duo may seem like an unlikely pair, both have strong personalities and even stronger senses of style.
Twenty eight years ago today (on Feb. 26), Hulk and Lauper enjoyed a tender moment at the Grammy Awards (sporting some serious '80s fashion). He squeezed into patent leather pants and cowboy boots, and she donned a kimono-style dress and very bold makeup. Though we might not be ripping a page directly out of their style books today, Lauper's look has all the bones of a great ensemble. The printed dress is a refreshing change from the classic Lbd and we love her stacked bangles. To modernize this outfit, we would shorten the hemline and »

Don't mess with the power of the Internet.
"Glee" may be learning this in the week after it became apparent that the Fox musical show had used Jonathan Coulton's arrangement of "Baby Got Back" for its "Sadie Hawkins" episode on Thursday (Jan. 24). While the song did air as scheduled and is now available for purchase on iTunes, the story isn't over.
That's because Coulton has an intense Internet-based following. And you anger an Internet following at your own peril.
The stealing/borrowing/honoring saga began on Friday, Jan. 18, when singer-songwriter Jonathan Coulton noticed that "Glee" had recorded a version of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back." It sounded familiar. On further investigation, it became apparent that "Glee" was using Coulton's own folksy, ballad-like arrangement of the song.
Alas, Coulton's version was a cover. So even with a completely rewritten melodic tune and a changed lyric (both used in the »

Cyndi Lauper has credited the longevity of her career to not confirming to pop music standards. The singer rose to fame in the mid-1980s with the success of her singles 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun', eventually selling more than 50 million albums globally. In an interview with Parade, Lauper was quizzed on why she believes her music has continued to influence singer-songwriters through the decades. "I don't think it's a secret: I never stopped [recording]," Lauper explained. "When people told me you can't do this or that, I would just do it. I didn't think there was another choice for (more) »

"(Dead) Girls Just Want to Have Fun" was a turning point episode. Not one that broke any new ground in itself, but it set the stage for the rest of Being Human season 3. I think it did a pretty smash up job, manging to entertain my supernatural-starved brain along the way.
How great was it to see Sally in new clothes? Her hug with Aidan was epic. As usual, it brought tears to my eyes. Happily, she did bring Stevie and Nick along on her life raft out of Limbo, but not attached to her in any way. They were able to move on and out her life to find their own happiness.
Sally just wanted to live. Immediately! But getting a boyfriend her first night back in her body? Not only was that unfair to the rest of the female species, it was ridiculous. I mean, geez, let her live a little, »

If you still think of Cyndi Lauper as the rainbow-haired, helium-voiced pop music confection who defined '80s girl power with such tunes as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "She Bop" -- well, you're still partially right. Her hair remains a canvas for her mood, and the voice is unmistakably Lauper.
But in the decades since she burst into the pop culture lexicon with 1983's platinum-selling "She's So Unusual," Lauper has evolved into an actress, author, Broadway composer and tireless philanthropist -- all the while continuing to make music and a quirky home life with her actor husband David Thornton and their precocious teen son, Declyn. Now Lauper welcomes fans into her crazy busy life in the new docu-series "Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual," which premieres Saturday, Jan. 12, on We: Women's Entertainment.
"Everyone thinks they know how I live, but they don't really know!" Lauper tells Zap2it of the show, »
