The movie is based on a short student film directed by Kevin Reynolds when he was in USC film school. The student film is basically just the skydiving sequence, based on a true story. Steven Spielberg, having seen the student film, recruited Reynolds to direct a full-length movie based on it.
The network FX has an animated series called "Archer." In 2013, season 4 of Archer features an episode titled, "Coyote Lovely." In this episode, the character Archer is lying next to a boulder holding a rifle. He uses his knife to carve the word "DOM" into the surface of the rock.
