Storyline

A documentary about the making of the first Sting album. Not only is some time spent in the studio (much of was recorded in an interesting mansion), but there is also some interesting information about what was going on in the lives of the members of his band during that time, including Sting's child being born. Goofs

During the last song, "Message in a Bottle", Sting plays a cream Fender Telecaster. For the last verse through the end of the song, he is playing a black Fender Stratocaster. When he says, "Goodnight," and walks off stage, he is seen taking off the cream Telecaster. The song is clearly pieced together from separate performances. See more »

An insightful look at Sting: the musician, the myth, and the man
21 March 2001 | by (Huntsville, AL) – See all my reviews

This film brings an insightful look behind the scenes as Sting prepares for his first show with his solo material in Paris. Apparently his future as a solo artist, or at least a commercially viable one, was riding on the reactions to this first show. He had a whole new band, and a whole new sound that made his record company apparently quite nervous. His band consisted of his tried-and-true backup singers from the Police days, and excellent jazz musicians including tenor sax virtuoso Branford Marsalis. Sting was being criticized composing jazz-inspired music,(although he is a veteran of many jazz and jazz-inspired bands before he joined the Police) and believe it or not, for using an all-black band. The talent of all members of this band shine through, even when they are just fooling around with cartoon theme songs during a break in rehearsal.

The performances in this film are excellent, and a must see for all Sting fans. But to me, the real beauty of this film is that you get a glimpse at the man behind this myth of rock stardom. Sting rehearses and jokes with his band, has some private moments with his daughter and Trudie Styler, his future wife, and participates in the birth of he and Trudie's second child all under the camera's unblinking eye. Quite a few times the mask falls and we see just a man. Sheer genius.
