Jennifer Lopez is reportedly backing out of her American Idol gig, citing too much work according to E! Lopez tops Forbes magazine as the most powerful celebrity, and sources told E! that the Latin Diva was done with Idol. "She's just too busy," one source said. Lopez has a tour with Enrique Iglesias that kicks off this summer in North and South America. "It is just like any working mom's dilemma," Lopez told E! at Monday's premiere of What to Expect When You're Expecting. "It's tough. It's a balancing act. DVD Release Date: May 15, 2012

Price: DVD $24.95

Studio: Global Film Initiative

Marat Descartes watches his neighborhood turn ugly in The Tenants.

Directed by Sergio Bianchi, The Tenants is a 2009 drama-thriller film from Brazil that zeroes in on the tensions that mount in a once-tranquil neighborhood when the wrong kind of neighbors move into development.

Despite a recent wave of violent crime in the city, manual laborer and night student Valter (Marat Descartes) lives a relatively content life with wife (Ana Carbatti) and two children in working-class São Paulo. But when three young criminals move in next door, a bunker mentality sets in and Valter soon discovers he is not the only one perversely affected by the mounting chaos of a city under siege, or the unsettling presence of his new neighbors.

The Tenants (or Os Inquilinos in its native Portuguese) played a host of film festivals in North and South America »

Celebrate Earth Day With BBC And Fantastic Giveaways

17 April 2012 8:43 AM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Earth Day is right around the corner, and it probably isn’t any surprise that BBC Home Entertainment wants to help you celebrate. They have an amazing sweepstakes going on right now (see full details below), but with the release of Frozen Planet, I want to give you something to win right here as well.

It’s awfully difficult trying to compare to an actual Polar Bear Adventure, especially one that includes serious treks into Polar Bear country, dog sleds, and airfare, but I think I’ve got something you’ll be interested in.

As I’m sure you well know, when it comes to Earth Day possibilities, there are no shortage of titles available from BBC, and I have a great selection in store for you. As long as it’s Earth Day, we might as well take a look at… well, the Earth. While we’re at it, »

Why Did The Hunger Games Become Such a Hit in the United States But Battle Royale Did Not?

29 March 2012 11:06 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

This question originally appeared on Quora. By Cristina Hartmann Lawyer by day, writer by night As a chaser to Monika's excellent answer, I'll add that:

The Hunger Games capitalized on popular trends, Battle Royale didn't.

Ya books with a female lead (or at least strong characters) are hot right now. Think Twilight and Harry Potter. Not only does Katniss outshoot and outthink Bella any day, The Hunger Games provides an exciting, fast-paced fantastical world in the absence of Harry Potter.

Battle Royale's English translation came out in 2003 (again in 2009 with an expanded edition). In 2003, the entire Western world twittered and  chittered about Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. A little Japanese novel about kids killing kids? Can't beat Tolkien and Rowling.

Another point to make is that the United States' economy looked strong and solid in 2003, generally bad news for dystopias. Just from my observation, »

Book Review: “The Company Of The Dead” by David J. Kowalski

Company Of The Dead by David J. Kowalski Titan Books

Alternate history books, I’ve always felt, have an extra layer of difficulty in properly executing them. It’s not just enough to create solid characters and tell a good story. With alternate history the author has to find a way to take known occurrences, re-work them, and then find new consequences and events that could have spun off of these re-worked happenings. The new world must be plausible; it must be familiar without being identical. Above all, it must have enough basis in reality that the audience can attach itself to the work and almost feel the “What if?” of it all. Fans of alternate history all know the name Harry Turtledove, The Master of Alternate History. With Company Of The Dead, David J. Kowalski is looking to carve a place out for himself amongst the pantheon of great alternate history writers. »

Then the wiser parent Discovery channel brings the sublime: Frozen Planet, this Sunday, March 18. Alastair Fothergill produced the stunning "Planet Earth,""Blue Planet" and here he is executive producer of "Frozen Planet," a Discovery Channel/BBC co-production that takes us North and South, to the Arctic and Antarctica. Game Change's gift of an improbable dignity to Sarah Palin | Ana Marie Cox

11 March 2012 10:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

HBO's Game Change brings more insight and sympathy to the McCain-Palin story than its real protagonists may have had

Game Change, the book, was an example of campaign journalism at its most crass: an inelegant hodge-podge of rumors and supposition threaded together with a thesaurus and gall. Game Change, the movie, is an example of what happens when you remove the journalists from journalism: you get a story.

A pretty good one, in fact. By choosing to focus on the psychodrama behind and following John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate, the makers of the movie picked out the 2008's second most compelling narrative (the major one having something to do the history of race in America, whatever) – but by far its most intimate one. Not many people can really identify with the story of a man attempting to fulfill the destiny of an entire »

TV Review: Stunning Performances Drive HBO’s Fantastic ‘Game Change’

10 March 2012 11:06 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – You may be surprised by the angle taken by HBO’s controversial “Game Change,” a film already being summarily dismissed by conservative pundits who probably haven’t even seen the piece and merely assume that it’s another liberal Hollywood hatchet job. It’s not that at all. Yes, it does not make Sarah Palin nor the staff behind John McCain’s failed Presidential campaign look all that smart but it does break down some key failures of what happened on the Republican side of the ticket in 2008 in ways that take these people from “SNL” parodies to real people. It humanizes the people behind the sound bites and does so with three of the best performances on television in the last few years. It’s fantastic in so many ways.

TV Rating: 4.5/5.0

Korean war epic The Front Line: DVD review

2 March 2012 12:45 PM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Director: Jang Hoon. Review: Adam Wing. War, what is it good for? Well, over-reaching sentiment and gritty action sequences for a start. The Front Line doesn’t attempt to think outside the box, but what it does do it does efficiently enough. Winner of Best Film at the 48th Daejong Film Awards, director Hun Jang (Secret Reunion) and author Park Sang Yeon (Jsa) take us back on the battlefield of The Korean War. Popular actors Ko Su (White Night) and Shin Ha Kyun (Thirst) star as lieutenants on the front line, along with an impressive cast that includes Ryu Seung Ryong (Battlefield Heroes), Ko Chang Seok (Rough Cut) and lone actress Kim Ok Bin (Thirst), who more than holds her own as a North Korean sniper nicknamed ‘Two Seconds’. The Front Line was South Korea’s entry for the 84th Academy Awards, and even though it didn’t make the shortlist, »

The Book Thief by Way of Downton Abbey

1 March 2012 6:36 PM, PST | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Lets move away from the fairy tale based movies and move towards something a little bit different. Everyone loves fairy tales yes, but there are also other very compelling stories out there that can be adapted for the big screen. Markus Zusak’s extremely popular novel The Book Thief is one such story. There is a reason it has been on the New York Times’ bestseller list for 4 years now – that’s an impressive 228 weeks on the top my friends. So it comes as no surprise that Fox 2000 is moving full steam ahead with a film adaptation.

The book is set in Germany during World War II and follows Liesel Meminger who is a foster child to Hans and Rosa. Living outside of Munich, Liesel “scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books.” The story describes Liesels relationship with her »

DVD Review: 'The Front Line'

28 February 2012 4:00 AM, PST | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★★☆ Towards the end of the Korean War, high up on Aerok Hill, soldiers continue their fierce fighting in an ultimate battle for an insignificant piece of land. In a strategic move to determine the new border between the two Koreas, North and South both sacrifice millions of lives. Hun Jang's The Front Line (2011) is a poetically painful drama about the destroyed humanity and tortured souls of those in war, in a land which hope has long deserted and the few moments of empty happiness mean everything.

The Front Line Blu-ray Review

21 February 2012 7:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The Film

Dispatched to the front line of the Korean civil war in January 1953, Kang Eun-pyo (Shin Ha-kyun) is on a mission to investigate the suspicious death of an officer and hunt out a potential communist spy. But as he begins to fight alongside the ‘Alligator’ unit his perception of the war and the divisions between the North and the South crumbles.

Director Jang-hoon, who impressed greatly with last year’s Lkff offering Secret Reunion, returns to familiar territory with a film that mines the complex and damaging effect of this divided country. Much like Secret Reunion the overarching message from Jang-hoon is that regardless of whether you’re from the North or the South of Korea you are still just another human being. This story of Koreans fighting Koreans over a symbolically important but ultimately pointless and tiny piece of land, Aerok Hill, also effectively taps into the absurdity and brutality of war. »

Westeros Comes to Smartphones! Game of Thrones App Lets You Explore the 7 Kingdoms

Whether your a fan of HBO‘s Game of Thrones or just hot for fantasy cartography, this is for you. Developer Sergey Rekuz has created an app that allows fans to explore George R.R. Martin‘s fantasy realms of Westeros and Valyria. I’ve played with the app extensively, and it’s a pretty cool concept. Users can simply type the name of any place Grrm has written about in A Song of Ice and Fire and the map will pinpoint the exact local for you; very helpful for the reader who can’t keep all these locales straight. What would really make this app a keeper would be a “sight seeing” feature that would allow users to read up on events that happened in specific places. Who wouldn’t like to read up on how Robert Baratheon smote Rhaegar Targaryen at the Trident, complete with some awesome artwork? Maybe in future releases. »

Utah school drops cougar mascot after parents complain - Realbollywood.com News

21 January 2012 1:55 AM, PST | RealBollywood.com | See recent RealBollywood news »

Washington, Jan 21: A Utah school board overruled a student vote to adopt cougar as the school's new mascot because the word can be considered a derogatory term.

Cougar is a large, tawny cat, Felis concolor, of North and South America. But the word also means "an older woman who seeks sexual relationships with younger men."

Instead, the mascot for the new high school opening in Draper, Utah, will be the Charger, the La Times reported.

Students headed for the new Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah, were asked to fill out mail-in ballots to choose a mascot and colours for the new school, slated to open in 2013.

"Cougars" was the top vote getter, followed by Diamondbacks, Raptors and Falcons. Students. »
