Storyline

Serial chronicling the lives of the residents of Ramsay Street in the fictional Australian suburb of Erinsborough. When the series began, it revolved around three families - the Ramsays, the Robinsons and the Clarkes, living at no. 24, no. 26 and no. 28 respectively. Nowadays, the scope of the programme is much wider and only one member of the original families remains in the street. The show reached a watershed in 1997 when the last remaining original character, Helen Daniels, died. The departure of her relatives and arrival of the Scully family marked the start of a new era for Neighbours. There's never a dull moment in Ramsay Street, and despite their many feuds, the residents will always - in the words of the show's theme tune - "be there for one another". Quotes

Joel: So, when you think about it, there's nothing wrong, absolutely nothing wrong, with two friends - which is what Flick and I are, friends - going out and spending a day together. I mean, that's natural.
Karl: And what about the kiss?
Joel: Well, I wouldn't call it a kiss as such.
Karl: A pash then.
Joel: A peck perhaps.
Susan: Gee, pecking's changed since our day, hasn't it?
Joel: Maybe it looked like a kiss.
Susan: It would have been the pressing of lips that confused us probably.
Joel: Alright, we just got caught up in the romantic mood of the...

As good/bad as it ever was
14 September 2003 | by (England) – See all my reviews

People say this show is not as good as it was. They are wrong. The standard of drama has never slipped from abysmal from day one. A sort of hybrid between 'Crossroads' and 'The Beano'.

It has always entertained me. What I like about it best, is that I get home and am not provided with any challenge to my brain whatsoever. Good. Who ever got anywhere by being forced to think?

The only regression is the theme song. Bring back the cheesy pub piano and the even cheesier line 'Next door is only a footstep away'. That's poetry that is.
