Dragon Ball's greatest villain, Frieza, has come back with a vengeance in his new Black Frieza form in Dragon Ball Super. Based on the small amount of his power that was shown, he already seems virtually unbeatable. Nevertheless, fans know that one of the heroes will take him down eventually, even if their chances of doing so may appear slim.
As unlikely as their chances of winning are, there are some heroes in Dragon Ball who undoubtedly have far better odds at beating Black Frieza. It's not just a matter of strength that determines which of them will actually beat Frieza -- there's also the matter of their place in the narrative. Some characters have better odds of beating Black Frieza simply because they've beaten many of the villains before.

Anime comes in such a variety of forms, from lighthearted slice-of-life like K-On to the adventurous to action-driven Shounen such as Naruto and Dragon Ball. It's easy to be able to determine the tone of a series like Attack On Titan with its post-apocalyptic premise or by looking at season one's fiery promo poster. The first few episodes will then set the stage for the rest of the series.
However, looks can be deceiving. Some anime pull a complete 180 after these starter episodes, which inevitably takes viewers on a dark and emotional journey that even the most eagle-eyed viewer would not expect.

The manga industry has shown tremendous growth in recent decades, and it could not have been done without pioneering franchises such as Dragon Ball or Naruto. Akira Toriyama, the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise, can be solely given major credit for carrying the love of manga out of Japan and spreading it over the globe with his works.
While it remains obvious that new mangakas will keep coming around as time goes on, Akira Toriyama in an interview published in the 50th Celebration Weekly Shōnen Jump Edition revealed his feelings towards the new and coming mangakas. He mentions roughly how they are primarily lacking a sense of originality in their works and need to step it up.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball has entertained and surprised audiences for four decades through its superior shonen storytelling. Dragon Ball remains such an evergreen success because of its lovable heroes, incredible transformations, and smart storytelling that increasingly expands upon its universe’s scope. However, an anime series is often only as strong as its villains, and without compelling antagonists, it’s easy for a story to sink. Dragon Ball delivers constant threats that only grow more powerful as the series continues, eventually reaching a point where they’re deadly enough to take out the entire multiverse.
Evil villains with a penchant for violence are par for the course in Dragon Ball, but there’s a sliding scale of evil that fuels these unforgettable foes. Some Dragon Ball villains are victims of circumstance, manipulated by others, or merely determined to be the strongest in the galaxy. However, there is also a...

Super Saiyan 3 is rarely seen because it drains a Saiyan's ki significantly faster than other transformations, making it unsuitable for fights that require stamina. Super Saiyan 3 is a transformation meant for the Other World, or places where time doesn't flow, as it uses up too much energy too quickly in the mortal realm. Examples from Dragon Ball Super and Fusion Reborn support the idea that Super Saiyan 3 should only be used in locations outside the flow of time, further emphasizing its rarity in the series.
Out of all the Saiyan transformations throughout Dragon Ball continuity–including Dragon Ball Z, Super, and Gt–arguably the one that is the most rarely seen is Super Saiyan 3, and the series has one genius answer for exactly why that is, though it's not a fully satisfying one.

Anime fans today have it incredibly easy compared to those who were cultivating this interest outside of Japan in the '90s and '00s. Back in the day, there was very little anime that made it to America in a way that even presented itself as anime at the time. Pokémon, Speed Racer (originally Mach GoGoGo in Japanese), and others were localized so intensely for American audiences in the earlier eras that it was a little bit silly. Much of that began to change when Cartoon Network began experimenting with the Toonami block of programming on their network in the late '90s.
Many millennials have a lot of good memories of Toonami specifically and how it introduced them to Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho and so many other amazing anime that they had never seen before. The programming block was a smash hit and is...

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball continues to surprise its fans through its storytelling. However, there are still several established staples that the series routinely turns to, such as explosive energy attacks and intimidating transformations that elevate characters to unprecedented heights. Dragon Ball’s transformations elicit such excitement that the series often gets reduced to these magical metamorphoses.

Dragon Ball has only been able to survive for as long as it has because of its extremely loyal and passionate fandom. They've have openly embraced supplemental video games, side stories, and even indulged in their own fan fiction during the years when there was no official anime or manga material in production. Fans’ relationship with an anime franchise can result in beautiful synergy when it’s done right. However, that doesn’t mean that audiences always know what’s best for a series and it’s not uncommon for popular opinion to overpower common sense and logical storytelling.
Shipping is a common activity that’s done in every form of media where audiences speculate upon entertaining romances and relationships that they’d like to see happen. Sometimes these unofficial ships come to pass, but it’s rather uncommon in a series like Dragon Ball that doesn’t indulge in many romantic relationships.

Future manga creators have been urged by Akira Toriyama to add originality and pride to their works for industry success. As one of the judges in a major manga competition held every year in Japan, Toriyama discussed his longing to see a work that truly makes him question the creator. Dragon Ball is one of the most beloved franchises of all time globally, not just in Japan. The impact of the series is nigh on impossible to quantify. From the Thanksgiving Day Parade to music to sports, Goku and his friends are everywhere. This is for good reason too, as Dragon Ball is incredibly timeless. The characters, the music, and the story still resonate as much today as they did decades ago and the setting is so fantastical that multiple cultures can find something in the story to absolutely adore.

When it comes to the greatest Dragon Ball fight scenes, Goku is almost always involved in one way or another. Often, Goku's friends will initiate the action, holding the villain off just long enough for Goku to show up and save the day. However, there are some fights in Dragon Ball that Goku has no involvement in at all, and they end up being even more exciting because of that.
As the protagonist, Goku's mere presence in a fight usually ensures victory. Taking him out of the picture has the unique effect of making the stakes feel higher, because fans can't be sure what's going to happen. With higher stakes and a more uncertain outcome, many of the fights without Goku happen to be the best in Dragon Ball.

Anime characters often boast wild and vibrant hairstyles that defy logic, showcasing creativity and uniqueness. Super Saiyan characters in Dragon Ball Z like Raditz sport extreme hairstyles, but some go even further, defying gravity. Characters like Ritsuko from Shiki and Hiro from Danganronpa rock chaotic and excessive hairdos that leave a lasting impression.
There are certain anime tropes that are pervasive and unavoidable in the majority of series, yet one of the more playful and innocuous traditions is radical hairstyles that defy reality. Anime prides itself on its creativity and the ability to showcase outlandish character designs that guarantee that unique individuals have unusual visual designs that match their dispositions. Characters can wear unusual clothes or fight with unexpected weapons, but strange hairdos are by far the most common affectation in anime.
It’s par for the course for anime characters to have rainbow-colored hair, even in the most grounded of series.

Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball Super is bigger in every sense of the word, and it expands the series’ scope through the introduction of a multiverse, radical new transformations, and dangerous villains who put Dragon Ball’s past threats to shame. A series like Dragon Ball is often only as strong as its villains, especially since Goku and the rest of Dragon Ball’s heroes have faced so many phenomenal enemies over the years who have put Earth in true peril. Dragon Ball Super adopts an interesting approach towards its foes, some of whom are familiar faces from the past, while others push completely original concepts that rewrite the franchise’s status quo.
Each of these villains requires Dragon Ball’s heroes to surpass their limits and think outside the box, otherwise the entire universe could be destroyed. There are flashy, unique threats who emerge from the shadows, but not...

Dragon Ball Super needs no introduction, being the latest installment in the legendary and eternally popular Dragon Ball franchise. Written by Akira Toriyama and illustrated by Toyotaro, this series picks up six months after the defeat of Majin Buu and sends Goku and his friends on a whole new slew of adventures. However, there is a massive difference between Dragon Ball Super and the previous mainline Dragon Ball manga series, and it concerns their anime adaptations. While there was a Dragon Ball Super anime series, it concluded in 2018, meaning that those who want to continue to enjoy the Dragon Ball Super story must read the manga. But how do American fans do that, and when do new chapters land?

Dragon Ball’s afterlife reduces dead individuals to disembodied spirits, unless they’ve done enough heroic acts that grants them the privilege to retain their bodies. Dragon Ball’s Other World is largely divided into Hell and Heaven, both of which can be escaped from, as well as waystations like Snake Way and King Kai’s Planet. Dragon Ball also includes a Demon Realm, which is the home of most demonic and Majin monsters.
Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball is rich in character development and lore, which has gradually expanded to a thriving afterlife that’s routinely referred to as Other World. Death is a common occurrence in most battle shonen anime, but it’s particularly prevalent in a series like Dragon Ball that allows for resurrections and other opportunities to come back to life and get another shot at existence. There’s tremendous versatility in anime and manga as storytelling mediums where it feels like anything is possible, yet it’s shonen series that often generate the most success and excitement. Shonen is a demographic that’s geared towards younger male audiences, which typically gravitates towards action and combat. There’s still a lot of freedom in the shonen genre and there are plenty of series that don’t include any battles that instead focus on slice of life storytelling, comedy, or even sports. However, it’s the action-packed antics of Weekly Shonen Jump titles that cause the greatest stir and are what fans think of whenever the shonen genre is in discussion. Shonen titles like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and My Hero Academia have completely revolutionized the anime and manga industries.
These are shonen series that not only transcend their demographic, but their entire medium and find ways...

As of 2024, the Dragon Ball franchise is 40 years old, making it one of the longest-running series in the history of shonen manga. Its anime adaptations have been even more influential in the genre, and were it not for Goku's adventures, there's a strong chance that the anime medium may have never become the international phenomenon that it is today.

Goku is Dragon Ball's greatest hero. He has taken down numerous, overwhelmingly powerful foes, many of whom he was even weaker than at the start of the battle. Due to sheer willpower, courage, and the kind of plot armor only awarded to the most iconic anime protagonists, Goku has always been able to pull off the win in the end.
As powerful as Goku is, there have been a number of battles that he had no business winning in Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball's greatest villains are known for their completely broken abilities, many of which Goku had no way to counter using his more basic move-set. It'll always be exciting to see how Goku manages to turn around a dismal situation to come out on top, but there's no denying that Goku's status as the hero makes him unbeatable for purely plot-based reasons.

Gohan's strongest Dragon Ball Z form is now officially named "Ultimate Gohan" in Dragon Ball Super chapter #102. The "Ultimate Gohan" transformation was originally unlocked by Elder Kai in Dbz, but wasn't named anywhere except in some Dragon Ball Z video games. Now, "Ultimate Gohan" is the official name of this transformation in Dragon Ball canon.
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super chapter #102! Gohan goes through no shortage of transformations throughout Dragon Ball Z, but the strongest form he ever achieved was never officially named in the manga, at least until Dragon Ball Super corrected that mistake and made Gohan Ultimate officially manga canon.
In Dragon Ball Super chapter #102 by Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou, Goku returns to the Earth for the first time in this arc. Immediately following “Granolah the Survivor Saga”, Goku and Vegeta went to train with Whis and Beerus to become strong enough to face Black Frieza.

Dubbing is an art, not science, and requires collaboration among actors, writers, translators, and production staff to capture the essence of a series. The Ocean Group played a significant role in the early English dub of Dragon Ball, creating unique differences and iconic legacies for the series. While Funimation's in-house dub is well-known, the Ocean Dub contributed memorable performances and lore, leaving a lasting impact on fans worldwide.
Dubbing is more of an art than a science. What works in one dub for one series will not work in another and that can make the whole premise a bit shaky. Excellent and memorable dubs are often the result of a labor of love. The actors, writers, translators, and production staff are usually all in on the project and work together to make the lines sound right. Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball has been an acclaimed shonen institution for four decades and there's still no end in sight for Goku and company's superpowered adventures. Dragon Ball's ongoing narrative has largely canonically connected to the most recent series and spin-offs and side-stories have been relatively sparse. Fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement of a Dragon Ball Super sequel anime that adapts the continuing manga's story beyond the Tournament of Power's events. In the meantime, Dragon Ball Daima is set for a 2024 release and the new spin-off series adopts a unique approach where Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of Dragon Ball's most beloved characters get magically transformed into children.

Majin Ozotto, the latest villain in Super Dragon Ball Heroes, originated from an obscure 1994 arcade game called Dragon Ball: V.R.Vs. Ozotto's ability to steal powers and moves from opponents makes him an unpredictable foe, capable of mimicking even Cell and Frieza. Reviving this forgotten character offers new possibilities for storytelling and keeps up with the evolving power dynamics in the Dragon Ball universe.

Because of the increasingly powerful villains Dbz introduced, the human characters who were so important to Og Dragon Ball slowly became irrelevant. Dragon Ball Super reintegrates the human characters into its plot by focusing on other aspects of their personalities besides combat strength. Even though Dragon Ball Super makes the saiyans more powerful than ever, this helps separate the humans from the fighting more, allowing them to shine in a way they haven't since the original Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z's original run was from 1986 to 1995, and things have changed quite a bit in the thirty years since Dbz ended. Dragon Ball has always been about its silly sense of humor, but the things that passed as funny in the late 80s are quite different than they are now. Many of Dragon Ball's running gags would make anyone cringe today.

As the arrival of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero comes closer, fans can’t help but walk down memory lane and think of the days when Budokai Tenkaichi was just finding its home in the franchise’s history. Even though Sparking Zero holds its own unique name, the crux of all this lies in a fighting game that has established itself as an essential part of the Dragon Ball franchise.
Keeping this in mind, fans online have been sharing their own memories and recalling the first time they tried out the game. Energy sources in battle anime often come with distinct properties. Whether it's Jujutsu Kaisen's cursed energy, One Piece's Haki, Hunter x Hunter's Nen, or Naruto's Chakra, every power system works at least slightly differently from others. However, several properties are shared among these systems, including battle auras – a firm connection to the user's physical and mental state, and how they can raise a user's potential infinitely beyond conventional human limitations. These shared traits are considered tropes and attributed to Dragon Ball, the grandfather of modern battle shonen.
