Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Under today's standards, this film is quite mature for kids, but by no means inappropriate. Adult advise is strongly suggested, since the fantastic ambient goes darker and more philosophically dense towards the end of the film.
  • Bastian being bullied at the start may be upsetting for kids who are going through that.
  • The film contains an extremely upsetting and emotionally powerful scene, where the hero's beloved horse Artax slowly sinks to his death in the Swamps of Sadness. As he sinks, Atreyu tearfully begs Artax not to give up, but is powerless to save him. During this, there are many close up shots of Atreyu crying, heightening the upsetting nature of the scene. At the end of the film, the horse comes back to life, but first-time viewers obviously won't know that.
  • We see a knight getting killed by a statue that shoots a laser at him. Then when Atreyu comes near, the knight's helmet cracks open, showing us a glimpse of his charred skull.
  • The appearance of G'mork is very frightening.
  • Atreyu's confrontation with G'mork near the end is very intense, especially when Atreyu dramatically challenges G'mork to fight him. There is also a lot of blood when Atreyu stabs him.
  • Not for under 7s, due to fantasy violence.
  • PG for fantasy violence, frightening images and brief nudity.
