Storyline

Albi, Franz and Tayfun ease through their small-town days, content to work at the garage, pick up girls and ride a bike. A little bit of freedom. When the new boss throws them out, they have to resort to new means to pay for the drinks, cigarettes and beloved motorcycles: betting, racing, crash-driving, car theft. But the tougher the going gets, the more they stick together. Written by Christoph Stappert

Not a bullseye at all
30 December 2016 | by (Berlin, Germany) – See all my reviews

"Treffer" is a West German German-language movie from 1984, so this one is already over 30 years old. It is a small screen release written by Christoph Fromm. He started his fairly successful writing career with this movie, but it makes a bit sense he wasn't that experienced yet here in the year when I was born because the story isn't too interesting or convincing, let alone touching. The director is Dominik Graf and most German film buffs have certainly heard this name. I however do not really associate anything too positive with it. In my opinion, he is really overrated and nowhere near the elite of German filmmakers. I cannot see why he is appreciated by so many as all I have seen from him (and that was quite a bit) was painfully mediocre at best. Same goes for this film. It is about a trio of bikers (one of them played by the young Dietmar Bär) and all the extraordinary things happening to them. It's the usual: love, crime, business, careers, foes etc. But sadly, as generic as it may sound, there was no convincing elaboration or character development in any of these areas. A lot of the film did not feel too authentic or realistic. And when it did, it did not feel interesting at all. The characters and performances (apart from the ethnicity) seemed interchangeable and it was very hard to care at all what would happen to any of them. And cheering for them? They weren't likable at all. they were actually criminals with what they did in this film and I saw no point in hoping they could weasel out of these situations instead of getting their fair punishment. This of course once again also has nothing to do with realism. Besides, I never really had a feeling I was watching actually existing people in this film but just actors giving performances and I would not really blame the actors for that but Graf instead as this is a problem I have often with his works. He certainly is not an actors' director. He wasn't back then, which is maybe still excusable, but he isn't today either. Back to this movie now: It's as forgettable as generic as it gets. It includes a lot of content that has been done in other films in terms of scenarios and setting and almost always been done better. I don't recommend checking it out because it also dragged a lot.
