Amazing, heartwarming yet tragic film based on the true story of Annie O'Farrell, from her outstanding novel of the same name, written in collaboration with Hathaway. It's difficult to believe this form of `treatment' existed until 1980 - but it did, and it would be far too idealistic and optimistic to suppose it doesn't still occur elsewhere. The story is also documented in the Victorian Supreme Court records. McGregor does a wonderful job in her role as the committed Hathaway, and deservedly won the AFI's Best Actress award in 1984. 7/10.
