Michelle Rodriguez Undergoes a Big Change in Trailer for Walter Hill’s Transgender Actioner ‘The Assignment’

23 January 2017 6:27 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It’s one of the more preposterous set-ups for an action movie in recent years, and potentially among the most offensive: a male assassin is kidnapped by his enemies and wakes up as a woman, thus sending them on a vengeful journey. The idea might become easier to jibe with once it’s understood that this is the basis for a new film from Walter Hill — provided that you enjoy his brand of gritty actioner, ranging from The Driver to 48 Hrs. to The Warriors to Streets of Fire, and I’m only taking time to name the ones I’ve seen for myself.

Controversy nevertheless surrounded his new film, (Re)Assignment, when it premiered at Tiff last fall, and even our positive review said, “When expecting more of a real statement on gender, it can’t help but feel a little lacking.” But positive we were, and intrigued I am to see the thing, »

‘The Assignment’ Trailer: Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver Star in Controversial Revenge Thriller

23 January 2017 10:02 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Walter Hill hasn’t been as prolific in recent years as he was in his heyday — the genre maestro directed the likes of “48 Hrs.,” “The Warriors” and “Streets of Fire,” among many others — but he’s back with “The Assignment,” which premiered to mixed reviews and no shortage of controversy at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Formerly known as “(re)Assignment,” the film stars Michelle Rodriguez as a killer seeking vengeance after involuntarily undergoing gender-reassignment surgery. Watch the trailer below.

“This operation is your reminder of the terrible thing you did,” the surgeon responsible (Sigourney Weaver) says as the trailer opens. “This is your opportunity for redemption.” Things progress as you’d expect from there: Rodriguez begins plotting revenge, Weaver offers skewed justification for her act and bodies pile up.
