Halloween Memories: Tristan Risk

30 October 2012 9:24 AM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

In American Mary, the new film from Jen and Sylvia Soska, Tristan Risk proves herself to be a breakout star with her portrayal of Beatress, the bubbly voiced stripper surgically modified to look like Betty Boop. Working beneath layers of facial prosthetics, Risk uses only her soulful eyes and dancer's body to convey a world of emotion. It's a subtle performance that declares the arrival of a talent to be reckoned with.

Last Halloween, I gathered the Soskas' spooky reminiscences during Mary preproduction, but this year production is finished, so I tracked down the Vancouver-based burlesque queen known as Little Miss Risk to ask about her Halloween memories. Much like the enchanting Beatress, she was amusingly direct and did not disappoint.

We're here to talk about Halloween, Ms. Risk. Tristan. Are you an All Hallows' Eve enthusiast?

One hundred percent all the way! Every drop in my bloodstream flows for Halloween. »

Kim Kardashian transformed into a blonde mermaid for Halloween this year -- and it was one pricey costume! The "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" star showed off her "Splash"-inspired ensemble at Avenue in New York on Saturday night, where she partied alongside boyfriend Kanye West and friend Lala Anthony at the Midori Green Halloween party. But those lighter locks weren't cheap.Kim reportedly shelled out over $2,000 to look more like Daryl Hannah's mermaid Madison at the bash. Why so expensive? The wig was made from real human hair."Kinda loving this blonde wig! Should I dye it for real?" Kim tweeted the night of the party. What do you think? Does she make a good blonde  ... and is $2,000 way too much to spend on a costume wig you'll probably only wear once?Check out more pics of Kim above, plus other celebrity Halloween costumes! The Star Market: Is the Beloved Tom Hanks Still a Box-Office Force?

26 October 2012 8:38 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Tom Hanks has had as varied a career as any A-lister — from sitcom star to big-screen comedy staple to Oscar-winning dramatic actor — and so it seems appropriate to find him playing six distinctly different roles in the Wachowskis' and Tom Tykwer's new genre-spanning epic Cloud Atlas, a big and bold reminder of all that Hanks is capable of. The most important question, though, is whether the beloved Hanks is still capable of toplining a big ol' blockbuster since coming off a few live-action duds. To find out whether Hanks still has the same star wattage that he used to, we polled industry insiders to ask one simple question: If Tom Hanks were a stock, would you buy, sell, or hold?Stock History: After the short-lived (but long-remembered) sitcom Bosom Buddies, Hanks hit it big with Splash in 1984 and then filled the next few years with so-so comedies like »

Watch: Rare Footage of Tom Hanks Performing Stand-up While Preparing for 1988's 'Punchline'

25 October 2012 4:03 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

You don't hear many people talk about Punchline. The 1987 dramedy about stand-up comedians hoping for their big break stars Tom Hanks at the height of his early career (it hit theaters only a few months after Big). This was a Tom Hanks that was beginning to change, though, moving away from the more overt comedies like Splash, Bachelor Party and The Money Pit in order to attempt material with more emotional weight. And Punchline gave him that, though it also brought Hanks into a sort of darker period in his career. He followed Punchline with The Burbs, Turner & Hooch, Joe Versus the Volcano, The Bonfore of the Vanities and Radio Flyer before reigniting his career with a turn in 1992's A League of Their Own. That lead to Sleepless in Seattle, which brought him...

Serious to Goofy, Good to Bad: The Definitive Tom Hanks Matrix

25 October 2012 10:00 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

In his new film Cloud Atlas, Tom Hanks plays a multitude of characters — a cockney ex-boxer turned writer, a cowardly goatherd in a postapocalyptic future, a dastardly doctor on an old-timey ship crossing the Pacific — that require all sorts of accents and prosthetics and acting styles. What better time, then, to map out Tom Hanks's career in matrix (Wachowski shout-out) form? We've plotted his films out on four quadrants, from his serious roles (see: The Green Mile, Saving Private Ryan) to his delightfully goofy ones (Big, Splash), good (Philadelphia) to bad (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close). »

Daryl Hannah has been released from jail following her arrest for protesting against an oil pipeline earlier this week. The Splash actress and environmental campaigner was arrested along with local resident Eleanor Fairchild when they blocked machinery on Fairchild's land in Texas on Thursday (October 4). Both Hannah and Fairchild have now been released from Wood County Jail, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reports. Hannah's manager Paul Bassis told the paper that the pair's behaviour was "a last resort", adding: "They [engage in civil disobedience] after local, state and federal agencies fail, after the courts fail, after everything else has failed." Daryl Hannah arrested in Keystone Xl protest

5 October 2012 3:44 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The actor along with another woman were arrested in Texas for criminal trespassing as the pair protested against an oil pipeline

The actor Daryl Hannah was arrested in northeast Texas on Thursday, along with a landowner as the pair protested against an oil pipeline designed to bring crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast.

"They've arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother," said Paul Bassis, Hannah's attorney.

Hannah and Eleanor Fairchild were standing in front of heavy equipment in an attempt to halt construction of the Keystone Xl pipeline on Fairchild's farm in Winnsboro, a town about 100 miles east of Dallas. They were arrested for criminal trespassing and taken to the Wood County Jail, Bassis said.

Hannah has long opposed TransCanada's construction of the $7bn pipeline, which is designed to transport heavy tar-sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas' Gulf Coast refineries.

The AP reports that the two women stood in front of construction equipment in an attempt to hinder workers from building the Keystone Xl pipeline designed to transport crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast.

When They Were Young: 10 Major Hollywood Stars And Their First Taste Of Failure

28 August 2012 10:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

For many a young rising star, there comes the time to prove their worth at the ever-enigmatic box office all on their own. Any young gun can co-star in a successful feature with a proven star by his or her side (see potential stars Chris Pine and Ryan Reynolds ride Denzel’s coattails in Unstoppable and Safe House, respectively). To prove your name is valuable above a film’s title, you must lead it, meaning you are both the film’s star and the film’s marketing campaign. At some point (usually early on), these ambitious pseudo-celebs must go for it, headlining a somewhat small, but significant, studio picture in the hopes of finding an audience they’ve been told by their agents and managers they have already built.

Sometimes its works. Other times, it does not. In honor of the currently-in-theaters Premium Rush, led by the potentially-bankable star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, »

Thn’s Guilty Pleasures Day 25: Roxanne

25 August 2012 2:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

There has already been a debate as to whether Roxanne is a guilty pleasure or not, I think it is because it’s an old romantic tale, but with a twist in the nose. Comic legend Steve Martin adapts the Cyrano de Bergerac play by Edmond Rostand and it’s one of his finest moments as a lead actor and script-writer.

For those in need of a little back story, Martin plays Charlie.D. Bales (C.D. from here on in), the local fire chief of small-town Nelson, British Columbia but he’s got one unmistakable thing about him, he has a giant nose and is pretty darn sensitive if anyone says anything about it. We learn this from the moment the film opens, as we witness him fight two men, only armed with a tennis racket after they assume he’s a pushover. Now, it’s obviously violent in »

Using our powers of make-believe and fantasy, we've assembled athletic champions from the entirety of movie history to give us a clear advantage towards the race for Olympic glory in every sport of the XXX Olympiad.

This year, the team events will be presented in single elimination format, with each archer shooting a total of 72 arrows from a 70-meter distance. Representatives from our women's team include District 12's Katniss Everdeen of "The Hunger Games" whose chief competitor for the gold is Scotland's Princess Merida of "Brave." Electric City: Tom Hanks Noir Online

18 July 2012 6:49 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

The Internet has doomed us to bizarre times. Lol cats, Reddit iAMAs and Re-pins, the strangeness never stops and its never stops evolving. And weirdest of all, there’s going to be a time when we cease to notice this as novel. The thirty-somethings who grew up during this cultural shift will become out-dated sixty-somethings. Internet oddity will become as customary a part of life.

That’s the world Tom HanksElectric City lives in – a cosmos where information soaks through every function of existence, and where much of that information is bizarre. Electric City is also a post-modern realm, as much a product of stylized gumshoe fiction as of cyberpunk. Imagine a fedora-wearing fusion of Dashiell Hammett and William Gibson, and you’re on the right monorail track.

And for me, Electric City is an underscoring of how dominant the Web is – how, in less than two decades, it »

Keck's Exclusives: Ron Howard Remembers Andy Griffith

Decades before his Oscar-winning career as the director of such films as A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13 and Cinderella Man (not to mention two of my favorites, Cocoon and Splash), Ron Howard's creative mind began taking shape playing the only child of a widowed sheriff on The Andy Griffith Show. After Griffith's passing on July 3, Howard spent his Independence Day holiday reflecting on the happy days he shared in Mayberry with a man he would always treasure. In his own words, Howard shares with TV Guide Magazine what Andy Griffith meant to him:

"Andy's passing and the outpouring of love and appreciation from fans and the media has caused me to...

Friends with Kids; Your Sister's Sister – review

Directors Jennifer Westfeldt and Lynn Shelton give the romcom a witty new focus in a week that saw the death of pioneering comedy writer Nora Ephron

As if in salute to Nora Ephron, who died last week, two refreshingly smart romantic comedies directed by women arrive on our screens. Both are in the best Hollywood tradition, as practised so skilfully by Ephron in her screenplay for When Harry Met Sally and in her direction of Sleepless in Seattle and Julie & Julia, but both new films also represent a significant step forward for a much-maligned genre.

To paraphrase the apocryphal vaudevillian on his deathbed: dying is easy, romantic comedy is hard. When done well, the romcom can deliver the most enjoyable and durable of films (It Happened One Night, His Girl Friday, The Apartment, Annie Hall, Four Weddings and a Funeral, even); done badly, it can make a person want to »

The Fairy – The Review

4 May 2012 5:58 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

This review originally ran in November when The Fairy played as part of the St. Louis International Film Festival

What if you met a real life fairy? How would you know? What would you do? American audiences had a similar proposition presented through cinema in 1984′s Splash, replacing a fairy with a mermaid, with whom Tom Hanks fell deeply in love with. The 2011 French film La Fee (The Fairy) is also a romantic fantasy, co-written and co-directed by Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon and Bruno Romy.

The Fairy is about a man named Dom, played by Dominique Abel. He works as the front desk clerk in a small hotel. He’s friendly, quiet, and perhaps more than a little naive. In the beginning of the film, Dom is hoping to settle down for the evening with some television and a sandwich. Unfortunately, business chooses otherwise.
