Review: Ron Howard's "Cocoon" (1985) Eureka Blu-ray Special Edition; UK Release

6 July 2016 3:28 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

By Darren Allison

I’ve always viewed “Cocoon” as the type of film that Steven Spielberg would have been very happy to have made. It has all the hallmarks of a Spielberg movie: a light hearted, warm, science fiction fantasy that is also extremely enjoyable and a perfect piece of innocent entertainment. It was, of course, Ron Howard who picked up the project, a relative newcomer in directorial terms. However, his stock was rising based on the very popular romantic comedy/fantasy “Splash” (1984) with Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. It was certainly enough to attract the attention of producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown at 20th Century Fox who were happy to take on the ambitious Howard and his vision for the film.

Given that the film was targeted at teenage audiences amid the mid-80s trend for special effects- laden spectacles, “Cocoon” managed to capture the imagination of a much wider audience. »

Original 'Splash' Director Ron Howard Is Also Heavily Involved in the Planned Remake

Recently producer Brian Grazer revealed that plans were afoot for a remake of the 1984 comedy, Splash, a very literal fish-out-of-water story about a female mermaid (Daryl Hannah) who reunites with the man (Tom Hanks) she rescued when he was a boy. She's thrust into a world full of things she doesn't understand and people who may not always have the best intentions. Grazer confirmed that the remake will include a major twist on the original concept, and that one big star is already attached. Original Splash helmer Ron Howard revealed to Fandango during a recent chat about his next movie, Inferno, that he's been right in the mix alongside Grazer hashing out the particulars of the remake. "I’ve been in on all of those...

Splash Remake in the Works

9 June 2016 10:40 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Back when M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water came out in 2006, a lot of people jokingly referred to it as a remake of Ron Howard’s 1984 film Splash, about a man who falls in love with a mermaid. Now, ten years later, it appears that a legitimate remake of Splash is actually in […] »

Splash remake is on the way, says producer Brian Grazer

7 June 2016 10:03 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In an interview with CNBC, producer Brian Grazer (Inferno, A Beautiful Mind) has said that one his earliest films Splash is getting the remake treatment.

Released in 1984, Splash was Grazer and producing partner Ron Howard’s first significant hit, with Howard also directing. Tom Hanks (A Hologram for the King) and Darryl Hannah (Kill Bill) starred in the film.

In the interview, attention turned to Grazer’s original treatment of the film, which was entitled Wet and was told from the mermaid’s point of view rather than the human man’s, played by Hanks.

“I’m actually gonna do Splash today,” said Grazer. “I’m actually going to do it from the point of view of… I can’t say anything about it. There’s a movie star involved, I haven’t announced it. We’re going to do a version of [Wet], but I can’t tell you the twist. »

Imagine Entertainment set to remake ‘Splash’

7 June 2016 2:14 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Brian Grazer and Ron Howard‘s Imagine Entertainment are apparently planning to remake their 1984 classic Splash.

Grazer, who produced the original with Ron Howard directing, spoke to CNBC.

“I’m actually gonna do ‘Splash’ today,” said Grazer. “I’m actually going to do it from the point of view of… I can’t say anything about it. There’s a movie star involved, I haven’t announced it.”

The original starred Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, and revolved around a young boy who is saved from drowning by a beautiful mermaid. He falls in love with her 20 years later when she returns to seek him out.

The word is that a new movie could be based on Wet, which was the title of the original treatment for the movie, with the story told from the mermaid’s point-of-view.

The Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah-headlined mermaid rom-com Splash is getting a remake...

And we thought things had been quiet on the movie remake front for a while.

In a summer where some of the sequels we’re being presented with are struggling to break through, it wouldn’t be a massive surprise to see more producers turn back to remakes. And with that in mind, producer Brian Grazer has confirmed that plans are afoot for a new take on the 1984 hit, Splash.

Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah starred in the fun original, that was helmed by Ron Howard. And in an interview with CNBC, Grazer admitted that “I’m actually going to do Splash today. I’m actually going to do it from the point of view of… I can’t say anything about it”.

He added that there’s already “a movie star involved »

Splash Remake Happening with a Major Twist

6 June 2016 4:26 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In this day and age, it isn't surprising to hear about any movie from the past few decades, or further, getting the remake treatment, as studios strive to find built-in audiences for its projects. Today we have word from producer Brian Grazer, who announced in a recent interview that he's producing a remake of the 1984 classic Splash. Unfortunately, he wouldn't reveal much, but he did say that there will be a major star involved in the production. And a big twist.

This is the first we're hearing about a Splash remake, and it isn't known if the producer has a writer or director attached at this time. Brian Grazer did state that the story will be set in modern-day, although he wouldn't offer any details about the story. Here's what he had to say during a CNBC interview that recently debuted on YouTube.

A 'Splash' Remake Is Coming with One Major Twist

6 June 2016 3:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

The idea for 1984's Splash was originally conceived during a late night drive in 1977 after producer Brian Glazer was left wondering what would happen if he met a mermaid and fell in love. Cut to seven years later -- after many in Hollywood rejected the concept -- and the film Splash was born, starring Tom Hanks as a lowly everyman who falls for a mermaid (Daryl Hannah) while also trying to protect her from nefarious individuals out to capture her. Oh, and John Candy is awesome as Hanks' best friend. Now cut to 2016 and Glazer seems to be back in the Splash game, telling CNBC's Carl Quintanilla (during Quintanilla's new show Binge) that he's remaking the '80s classic, only this time they're switching it up by making the film follow the point-of-view of...

Splash Remake In The Works With A Twist

6 June 2016 2:46 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Another week, another forgotten Hollywood movie being readied for the remake treatment. This time round, it’s Ron Howard’s bright and breezy ’80s rom-com Splash that is in line to be overhauled for the modern age with a twist, according to prolific producer Brian Glazer.

Speaking to CNBC (via The Playlist), Glazer revealed his intentions to begin the casting process for said remake in the not-so-distant future, potentially reworking the premise so that the movie is told from Madison’s perspective, the bubbly mermaid who twice saved Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks) from drowning.

Here’s what Glazer had to share about the embryonic project:

“I’m actually doing Splash, and I can’t say [anything more]. I’m actually going to do it from the point-of-view of…I can’t say anything about it. There’s a movie star that’s going to be involved, [but] I haven’t announced it. I »

Classic Film 'Splash' Getting a Remake!

6 June 2016 2:36 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Producer Brian Grazer (24, Splash, A Beautiful Mind) dropped an interesting bit of news to CNBC during a recent interview. When getting posed the hypothetical question of who he would cast in Tom Hanks role in a modern day Splash, Grazer said the following:

"I'm actually doing Splash today and I can't say. I'm actually going to do it from the point-of-view of…I can't say anything about it. There's a movie star that's going to be involved, [but] I haven't announced it."

The response from the interviewer is actually quite hilarious, so I highly recommend watching the actual clip if you weren't planning on it already.

The interviewer probed a bit further, stating in his book A Curious Mind that the first take they had on the film was from the perspective of the mermaid, and Grazer went on to confirm that they'd be producing that version of the film.

Brian Grazer Announces 80s Remake That Hopefully Won't Ruin Your Childhood

6 June 2016 2:17 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Almost any movie, especially from the 90s on back, is bound for a remake at some point but I can't say this one would have immediately come to mind. Producer Brian Grazer is working on a remake of mermaid rom-com Splash. Directed by Ron Howard, Brian Grazer helped write the romantic comedy along with Bruce Jay Friedman, Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel, and Bruce Jay Friedman. It starred Tom Hanks as a co-owner of a fruit and vegetable business along with his older brother, played by John Candy, and Daryl Hannah as Madison the mermaid who gains legs when she's on dry land. Eugene Levy plays on overeager scientist looking to study her. (There was also a made-for-tv sequel titled Splash, Too but it's probably best for everyone involved if we forget about that.) It was silly, like lots of 80s films, but cute nonetheless. /Film posted an interview Grazer did »

They're Remaking Splash, Only With This Major Change

6 June 2016 12:16 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Hollywood has already proved that it has no qualms about rebooting films that are 10, 20 or even 30 years old. In 2016 alone, we’re going to see reboots of Pete’s Dragon, Ben-Hur, The Magnificent Seven and Ghostbusters, the latter of which has especially led fans to react rather uproariously. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that producer Brian Grazer is developing a remake of his 1984 classic Splash. However, Brian Grazer has insisted that there will be one major change to this version, as it will come from the mermaid’s point of view. Brian Grazer made this revelation while talking with CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla about his hugely impressive CV as a producer, which saw him pick up the 2002 Best Picture Oscar for A Beautiful Mind. Brian Grazer was actually also nominated for the Best Original Screenplay of 1984 after he co-wrote Splash.  Still, Grazer& »

Brian Grazer Plans "Splash" Remake

Studios continue to remake properties left and right, and now producer Brian Grazer has revealed this week that he's working on a new version of one of his earliest films - the Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah mermaid romantic comedy "Splash".

Sitting down for an interview with CNBC, Grazer says he's eager to revisit the material: "I'm actually doing 'Splash,' and I can't say [anything more]. I'm actually going to do it from the point-of-view of…I can't say anything about it. There's a movie star that's going to be involved, [but] I haven't announced it.".

He did go on to confirm the film will be an adaptation of the original treatment "Wet" which told the story from the mermaid's point of view, but he adds "I can't tell you the twist." Grazer's long-time collaborator Ron Howard helmed the original, no word on his involvement here. »

Producer Brian Grazer Says He’s Remaking ‘Splash’ But With A “Twist”

While everyone bemoans Hollywood‘s lack of imagination in their pursuit of franchises, remakes, and sequels, when the studios do offer up something original — like for instance, this weekend’s hysterical “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (or even “The Nice Guys” from a couple weeks back) — nobody shows up.
