Ted Field’s Radar Pictures is developing a movie about the Chicago Cubs winning the 2016 World Series — their first in 108 years — with the team and its recently-retired catcher David Ross.

Radar has acquired movie rights to Ross’ upcoming memoir “Teammate: My Journey in Baseball and a World Series for the Ages.” The book is co-written by sportswriter Don Yaeger and will be published May 9 by Hachette Books.

The book centers on the final game of the series against the Cleveland Indians, during which the 40-year-old Ross became the oldest player to homer in a Game 7 of the World Series.

The Cubs won the game 8-7 in 10 innings. Ross had announced that he would retire at the end of the season following a 15-year career in Major League Baseball.

If you don’t know who Curtis Armstrong is that’s Ok.  If you don’t know who Booger from Revenge of the Nerds is then please stop reading this and move on to another website.  I don’t have the time nor the patience to explain to you how Booger is one of the best 80s movie characters of all-time.   But let’s not forget some other characters that Curtis Armstrong played in the 80s.  Before Revenge of the Nerds even existed, Armstrong played Tom Cruise’s best buddy Miles in Risky Business.  And then right after Revenge of the Nerds, what did he do?

14-Time Oscar Nominee Thomas Newman on Scoring Space Drama ‘Passengers’

14 February 2017 1:17 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

This is not a typo: Thomas Newman has earned 14 Oscar nominations without a win. The composer behind such iconic scores as “The Shawhsank Redemption” and “American Beauty,” son of legendary composer Alfred Newman, finds himself back in the race with director Morten Tyldum’s sci-fi romance “Passengers.” Though he’s tackled countless genres, Newman spoke to Variety about the unique challenges of composing the sound of outer space.

How did you come to be involved with “Passengers?”

For me, it was space. I’ve done space a little bit with “Wall-e,” but I’d never really done a space movie and the idea of floating through space interested me.

How do you go about creating the sound of the future?

Probably anywhere that gives you an idea. You just want to have an idea and if it’s a success, you ask where else it can go. It’s a »

Dead Poets Society: why its sets were burned after one day

7 February 2017 3:26 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Simon Brew Feb 28, 2017

The first day of production on Dead Poets Society was such a disaster, its sets were burned down...

One of the late Robin Williams' most beloved films is Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society. In the movie, Williams played John Keating, the unorthodox teacher at a 1959 boys prep school. Even just writing those words makes me want to stand on a table and proclaim "oh captain my captain".

As with many loved movies though, there's a story or two lying behind the success of Dead Poets Society (a movie that Dustin Hoffman was once upon a time going to star in and direct). In particular, after one day of shooting, it looked like the film wasn't going to happen at all. »

You’re Not a Nerd: The sad co-opting of geek culture

21 January 2017 9:45 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Anghus Houvouras on the sad co-opting of geek culture…

Growing up, I was a nerd. An actual nerd. A computer loving, socially awkward small-for-my-age video game addict who struggled to fit it. This was back in the 1980’s when the computers were Commodore 64s and the video games were Atari. If I was a character in Revenge of the Nerds, I would have been Gilbert. Who am I kidding. I didn’t have an ounce of Anthony Edwards charisma. I was probably more akin to Lewis. Hold up. Lewis got the girl in the end, which rules out that comparison. I was never good at math and my grades weren’t good, so I guess that made me Booger.

At some point during the 21st Century, the words ‘nerd’ and ‘geek’ migrated from social stigma to a badge of honor. I see so many people proudly referring to themselves as geeks. »
