Ted Field’s Radar to Produce Crime Thriller ‘Brackish Water’

23 July 2015 1:31 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ted Field’s Radar Pictures has come on board to produce crime thriller “Brackish Water,” with Noah Harald set to direct from his own script, Variety has learned exclusively.

Field, Benjamin Friedberg and Mike Weber will produce for Radar. “Brackish Water,” set in Louisiana’s criminal underworld, was developed by Harald and Friedberg after the latter signed an overall producing deal with Radar.

The duo then commenced production on a short film as a “proof of concept” teaser — a growing trend in the world of independent production. Harald and Friedberg raised the funds to create the short via an equity investor and are in the process of completing financing to shoot the film in late 2015.

“To find a company that completely gets this gritty twist on the revenge thriller and also happens to have produced stacks of films that I love feels like a perfect marriage,” said Harald.

The logline is under wraps. »

Ted Field’s Radar Pictures Expands with Microbudget Specialist Paul Kampf(Exclusive)

15 June 2015 3:25 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

After more than three decades of producing movies, Ted Field is expanding his Radar Pictures into the micro-budget arena by tapping veteran producer-director-teacher Paul Kampf as a partner, Variety has learned exclusively.

Kampf has signed an overall co-production deal with Radar under his production shingle Paul Kampf Studios. Kampf’s school has made three micro-budget feature films — “Amnesia (Who Are You?),” “Brad’s Untitled Restaurant Project” and “From Grace” — and will serve as a key source of talent for projects.

The first film under the Kampf-Radar partnership is “Homecoming,” a dark comedy written by Sarah Hehman and Christi Sperry that is planned for shooting in Portland in the late summer. The story centers on a husband getting his dream job and moving his simple family to wealthy suburbia, where his lonely, naive wife gets swept into the dangerous world of alpha moms.

Producers are Kampf, Field and Aldo Lapietra. Executive »

Bradley Whitford Remembers ‘West Wing’ v. ‘Sopranos,’ Winning an Emmy

3 June 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

For a few years in the early 2000s, the best way to win an Emmy was to get a role on “The West Wing.” Original cast member Bradley Whitford had his turn in the second season, when his character grappled with Ptsd after surviving an assassination attempt. More recently, Whitford scored memorable guest turns on Amazon’s “Transparent” (for which he recently won a TV Critics Choice award for guest actor) and Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and joined the cast of Showtime’s frosh comedy “Happyish.”

The West Wing” was an Emmy staple during its run. What was that experience like?

The weird thing about doing a television show like “The West Wing” is you get a crash course (in awards season). It’s not like a Broadway play — you know, “The Book of Mormon,” they go to an awards show once. You’re on a TV show that’s »

Mrs. Wolowitz and Grief

1 May 2015 6:00 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

I recently lost my mother after taking care of her for many years. My father died almost a decade ago. But this is not a sob story, it’s a journey of discovery I found mirrored on television. The Big Bang Theory has been a favorite of mine since it premiered (as a chemist, I appreciate it having actual science jokes), and over the past seven seasons, I have grown with the characters. The series improved and matured when it added female scientists Bernadette Rostenkowski and Amy Farrah Fowler to the main cast, demonstrating that geeks and other intelligent people are not all extras from Revenge of the Nerds. Particularly helped by the addition of these characters was Howard Wolowitz. Played by Simon Helberg, Howard has developed the most out of all the characters over the series’ run, going from a wannabe pick-up artist mamma’s boy to a caring and supportive husband to Bernadette. »

Classroom Chaos: Top Ten High School Outsiders

23 February 2015 6:11 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

One of the hardest bouts of growing pains experienced by adolescents is that rite of passage known as the high school experience. In high school one is subject to discovering their own sense of self-identity and purpose. In fact, sometimes the social factor is crucial because the cost of belonging in social-related circles is vital in a four-year commitment to belonging among your peers.

The tension is high to belong and get along as your search for excellence in good grades, social interaction and the overall learning experience is important. However, not every youngster can cope with what they are faced as the obstacles to excel are demanding in high school. Hence, the potential to become “an outsider” is inevitable and the unlikeliest label that no one can overcome no matter how much they try.

The movies have been instrumental in capturing such heavy-handed angst and frustration of the tortured »

Why you should be watching 'King of the Nerds'

20 February 2015 5:30 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The competition between nerds is now in its third season, and you should be tuning in every Friday. Why? Super-nerdy and fun challenges A giant game of Angry Birds. A giant game of Battleship. A giant Rubik's Cube. Quidditch, complete with flying. Robots playing dodge ball. A real-life version of Tron. Nerf guns shooting down drones. Lots of quizzes on nerd-ish trivia. The show's challenges--two each episode, one team challenge and one individual challenge--play on nostalgia and pop culture. They always have a sense of humor, and they're also visually interesting, fair competitions that rival those on bigger shows. Great hosts having fun "King of the Nerds" offers a big portion of wackiness and ridiculousness with a side of self-deprecation, and it's all served on a bed of a serious competition. Hosts and executive producers Curtis Armstrong and Robert Carradine, who starred in "Revenge of the Nerds," set that tone. »

Check Out Pixar's 22 Essential Storytelling Rules

9 February 2015 1:26 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It’s hard to argue that Pixar not only revolutionized the world of animation by creating the first feature completely generated by computers, they also dominated their field during the entirety of the last decade. In terms of technical achievement and original, heartfelt storytelling, they raised the bar so high with their hat trick of three back-to-back-to-back masterpieces, “Ratatouille”, “Wall-e,” and “Up”, that even when they release perfectly fine and entertaining films that fall short of being greatness, we make ourselves believe that they’re in a slump. “Toy Story 3” was arguably the best in the series, “Brave” was underwhelming but fun, “Monsters University” was an excellent remake of “Revenge of the Nerds” for kids, and “Cars 2”, well, it wasn’t that bad, was it?  Apart from their revolutionary technical prowess, one of the most important reasons Pixar’s work is so beloved across cultures and generations is »
