A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) Poster

Goofs

Continuity

(at around 23 mins) The person who gets up to speak in the classroom is not the same person who was sitting in the same seat in the establishing shot a few seconds earlier.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

(at around 22 mins) When Rod is cornered by the police, he stops and raises his hands and you hear him say "I'm cool, I'm cool", but his mouth clearly isn't moving.
(at around 34 mins) When Nancy watches The Evil Dead on TV, the scene playing is from the end of the film; however, the screaming heard during the scene is from the famous "Tree Rape" scene, a scene which happens near the beginning of the film.

Character error

(at around 16 mins) Throughout the movie, along with all the sequels, Freddy's "razor" glove is on his right hand. When Freddy is chasing Tina, there is a quick shot of him jumping out from behind a small tree and his glove is on his left hand.

Continuity

(at around 37 mins) When Glen is watching over Nancy while she sleeps, the lamp is turned off, darkening the entire room. When she wakes up from her nightmare, her bedroom light is turned on, lighting the entire room. This mistake is digitally fixed in the 2006 Infinifilm release of the film.
(at around 28 mins) To wake herself up, Nancy smashes the outside of her arm against the boiler. But when she wakes up, the burn mark is on the inside of her wrist.
(at around 1h 15 mins) When Nancy checks her watch she is wearing a short-sleeved nightgown, but the closeup shows a wrist with the end of a long blue sleeve on it.
Before Nancy goes to sleep, when Glen is supposed to be watching her, her blue phone is on the left-hand side, next to the chair. When Nancy wakes up screaming, it's on the right.

(at around 56 mins) In a wide shot, when the bars have just been put on the house, the front door window bars are different than the close-up of Nancy on her porch. The closer shot shows a heart shaped design rather than the three-bar pattern of the wide shot.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

In the full-screen version, during the first nightmare sequence right before Freddy pops up to scare Tina, you can see Robert Englund as Freddy crouched down and moving into place behind her; however, at the time of the film's release, director Wes Craven would assume that only the wide-screen version would eventually be available for home viewing. You can't see Englund behind Tina in the wide-screen version.
When Nancy smashes Freddy's head on the coffee pot, she takes the pot off the top of the TV -- but that was the coffee pot that her mom already took off of her TV.

Plot holes

It is established in later films that 1428 Elm Street was Freddy's house. Why would two of the people who killed him then move into his house?

There's literally no reason for Rod to bring the cultivator (gardening tool) to the party and no reason to think it would scare the girls since he does not know about Tina's or Nancy's bad dreams about the razor glove (which the cultivator is similar to). It was simply included in the script as foreshadowing, but it could suggest that he's been having similar bad dreams as the others but hasn't shared them.

Miscellaneous

(at around 1h 8 mins) After Glen is killed (apparently at midnight), Nancy tells her father, who is investigating the crime scene, to come across the street to her house in 20 minutes to wake her up. In 20 minutes the police are able to clean up the mess in Glen's room, remove the body, and Nancy has time to set up all the booby-traps in the house AND fall asleep.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

(at around 1h 8 mins) When Glen is just about to be killed, we hear the radio announcer say "it's twelve midnight," but when Kruger drags Glen into the bed, the clock nearby shows 11:52. Since the radio announcer also gives the station call-sign as "KRGR" ("Krueger" minus the vowels), the time may be midnight only in Glen's dream.

Plot holes

Towards the end of the movie, Nancy was about to go home and go to sleep so she could bring Freddy back with her. She told her dad to come break down the door in exactly 20 minutes so he could get Freddy. In the 20 minutes before she was scheduled to wake up from her dreams, she was able to string up all those booby traps and have a heartwarming talk with her mother and then proceed to fall asleep to go get Freddy. That seems highly impossible.
From Nancy's dreams it is revealed that if she holds onto something while in the dream world, like an object or person, she can bring that object or person into the real world from the dream world. This is shown in the movie's climax; however, Nancy clearly held onto Freddy earlier when she went to find him with Glen unsuccessfully guarding her in her bedroom. She struggled with Freddy and held onto his razors to keep him from killing her in the dream world and awoke in the exact same way as in the climax, from an alarm, yet Freddy didn't get pulled into the real world at this point.

Revealing mistakes

(at around 1h 22 mins) While Freddy chases Nancy down the stairs after the sledgehammer hits him, he falls down from the top of the stairs. When he falls, you can clearly see Freddy land on a bed to break his fall. (corrected on both the 2 disc Infinifilm DVD and the US Blu-Ray release of the film)
