While in Austin at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, I had the opportunity to catch up with a variety of folks responsible for the modern cult classic Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, which celebrated its 10th anniversary with several screenings as part of the fest’s midnight lineup. Those on hand for the interview included co-writer/director Scott Glosserman, co-writer/producer David J. Stieve, star Nathan Baesel, and co-star Ben Pace.
As it turns out, when you get a group of filmmakers who also happen to be great friends together in one room for an interview, things can get a little nutty. That being said, we have some great highlights from Daily Dead’s in-depth chat with the gang behind one of the more boundary-pushing genre films of the last several decades, including the risk involved with making Behind the Mask, the legacy of Leslie Vernon, how they »

The hits keep on coming from your friendly neighborhood streaming giant, Netflix, which announced a fresh round of titles hitting the airwaves next month. Ranging from never-before-streamed comedy specials to historical classics to critically acclaimed kids’ films, these titles are sure to keep you cooped up and entertained throughout mud season. Enjoy.
1. “Richard Pryor: Live & Smokin'” (available April 1)
The first of only four specials ever filmed by the legendary comedian, this 45-minute stand-up set from 1978 was released on VHS in 1985 and has never been available to stream before (legally). Almost universally revered by comedians of all stripes, this special has stayed relatively obscure due to an uneven performance from Pryor. Still, you can learn from a genius even on a bad day.
2. “Across the Universe” (available April 1)

Dominic Monaghan, star of Lord of the Rings and Lost, stars in new creepy thriller, Pet. In Pet, Monaghan stars as Seth, a shy and reclusive young man who passes his days working at his local dog shelter. His life changes however, after a chance encounter with Holly (Ksenia Solo), an old school crush. In a bid to get closer to her he starts stalking her and devises a plan to make her his forever, and it involves a very large cage.
Things aren’t quite as they seem as this clever film subverts expectations and goes into some very interesting territory. The film premiered in the UK at Frightfest last summer, and whilst there, we sat down with Monaghan to get a deeper perspective on the film.
Apart from Pet, what is your favourite scary movie?
My favourite scary movie in recent years is definitely Let the Right One in. »

After you watched Poltergeist for the first time, you might have stayed away from steak and chicken for a while, but in a new episode of her horror-themed cooking show, Kaci Hansen, aka The Homicidal Homemaker, embraces the eeriness of the film's crawling steak and maggot-covered fried chicken to make two creepy candy creations.
From The Homicidal Homemaker: "There are many terrifying scenes in Poltergeist to draw inspiration from, but of course, I chose to recreate one of the most stomach-churning scenes in the film – the slithering steak and maggot-infested chicken…as candy! Both of these recipes are simple to make, and neither one will cause you to peel your face off in the bathroom.
Get this and other spooktacular horror themed recipes on my website, www.TheHomicidalHomemaker.com!"
The Poltergeist crawling steak and fried chicken candy recipe is one of many frightfully festive (and tasty) ideas from The Homicidal Homemaker »

Who doesn't love the original 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street directed by Wes Craven? Even the most jaded horror fan recognizes its brilliance, and most stayed far away from the 2010 remake. This includes original Nancy, Heather Langenkamp. Like many of us, she has her reasons for refusing to watch the reboot, which is now 7 years old. Though her reasons are a bit more personal.
2010's A Nightmare on Elm Street, which hails from Platinum Dunes, did a lot to ruin the franchise. As one can clearly see, it was such a non-starter in terms of rebooting the franchise that we've never seen a sequel and the production company is still hard pressed to get a second remake off the ground.
Samuel Bayer directed this latest adventure for Freddy Krueger, which gave the ultimate night terror with the knife fingers an all-new backstory. Knowing of the film, but having never watched it, »
The A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise will always be near and dear to my heart. My first horror memory is of Freddy bursting through Joey’s waterbed and sealing him within, letting his mother find his drowned body. Once that… Continue Reading →

Today is a very special day because I turn 28 today! I jest, of course, it’s actually the 30th anniversary of what is arguably the best entry sequel in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise: A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (seriously though, it is my birthday). Dream Warriors is lauded by fans of the franchise as being […] »

Stunt-man turned director Chad Stahelski has certainly had a good start to his burgeoning career as an action auteur. John Wick began what is now in the process of becoming a hugely successful franchise. Two films in, with a booming and expansive box office appeal. Next up for him is, all being well (as this project has long gestated and had directors come and go, year on year) is a remake of Highlander.
Now I should state two things now. Firstly, I love Highlander. The first film is an underrated piece of brilliance. From the visuals, to the music to the sheer style of it, Highlander is one of a kind. It then spawned four more films (none of which were good) and a TV show, as well as comics, anime and more. »

We’ve all been in that weird, unnerving situation where it seems like everyone in the room is completely different than you. This seems to happen much more these days in the divisive landscape that we currently experience in America. Get Out takes the premise of a stranger in a strange world, adds in some pertinent social commentary about race and racism, and mixes it up with an interesting horror angle that is both disturbing and darkly humorous.
Jordan Peele, one half of the sketch comedy series Key and Peele, showcases some serious genre filmmaking chops in his directorial debut. Though that shouldn’t be too big of a surprise for those who watch his comedic television show, which has tackled the genre of horror and different social commentary themes on numerous occasions. It also shouldn’t be a surprise that Peele pays homage to horror scares with near perfect »

When Legion leans into its horror influences, things get very interesting...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 Chapter Three
The best superhero stories experiment with genre. The Dark Knight is a crime drama, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a classic espionage tale, Guardians Of The Galaxy is a space opera, and Deadpool is a satire. By using the conventions of other genres, these films told heroic tales that felt fresh in the face of superhero fatigue. Instead of Jessica Jones playing like a superhero show with noir elements, it stands apart as a detective series that just so happens to feature a super strong protagonist.
Legion has had a chance to try on a couple different hats in its early episodes, indulging in psychedelic surrealism, »

A few months ago we interviewed filmmaker Michael Ramova about his upcoming fan film based on the Friday the 13th game for the Nes. This week, he has officially released the short film to the masses via Youtube, which you can check out right here:
Legendary for its difficulty, and utter craziness, Friday the 13th for the Nes holds a special place in many gamer’s hearts (if not necessarily for the right reasons). If you enjoyed the film, let him know! Like, and share. He has mentioned more than once that he would love to do a short film based on A Nightmare on Elm Street for the Nes if this current project is successful.

Robert Englund has played Freddy Krueger more times that can easily be counted, but other than the self-reflexive “New Nightmare,” his time on Elm Street has been entirely fictional. That’s soon to change, reports Entertainment Weekly, with Mike Kerz’s upcoming documentary “Nightmares in the Makeup Chair.” Watch the trailer below.
Read More: Robert Englund’s Idea for a New ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Sequel Is Better Than Most of the Actual Sequels
“‘Nightmares in the Makeup Chair’ is my love letter to the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ series and to practical makeup”” says Englund in a statement provided to EW. “I’ve always been in awe of the multi-talented makeup effects artists…This documentary not only captures their talent, but I think it might inspire a new generation of practical effects artists. I was happy to become Freddy once again to share the makeup process with the fans. »

Tell someone that Every Which Way but Loose is getting remade and they may give you a bit of an "Er, what movie is that again?" face. It is an odd, easily confused title for a movie, after all. It's not as distinct as, say, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Tell someone that they're remaking the movie where Clint Eastwood has a pet orangutan, though, and they'll know exactly what you're talking about. You can't really confuse that combination with any other movie...

Tell someone that Every Which Way but Loose is getting remade and they may give you a bit of an "er, which movie is that again?" face. It is an odd, easily confused title for a movie, after all. It's not as distinct as, say, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Tell someone that they're remaking the movie where Clint Eastwood has a pet orangutan, though, and they'll know exactly what you're talking about. You can't really confuse that combination with any other movie (except, of course, the sequel, Any Which Way You Can). Original director James Fargo is producing the remake, which will be directed by Anthony G. Cohen who made last year's straight-to-vod body swap comedy The Sex Trip. They haven't cast anyone in the Eastwood role yet, so this project...
