Trivia

Author Bernard Malamud based his baseball tale on the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table seeking the Holy Grail. The name "Roy" means "King", and Roy takes his bat, Wonder Boy, from the oak tree that was struck by lightning, just as Arthur pulls the sword from the stone. Pop Fischer is the wounded Fisher King, though in this story, it is Roy who has the wound that will not heal. There is the Lady Without Mercy, who gives Hobbs the wound. He rallies the "Knights" of the Round Table to be the best in the land. The original Malamud story has the tragic conclusion that better reflects La Morte d'Arthur. See more »

Goofs

When Pop benches Bump Bailey and sends Roy up to bat for the first time (at around 38 minutes), Bump is walking up the steps of the dugout to the field. When Pop stops him, Bump is clearly holding a bat, since he raises it to his left shoulder as shown from behind. After the quick cut to the front view of the dugout, when Pop is still talking to him, Bump's bat has disappeared from his hand. See more »

A 20th Century Fairy Tale
19 December 1998 | by See all my reviews

That's how I personally summed up this movie when I first saw it. And what better place to couch a fairy tale than in a milieu with real legends like Ruth and DiMaggio and Mantle ... or fabulous ones like "The Whammer" and Roy Hobbs. The story of a man playing the game they way it SHOULD be played, wishing while injured that his father could have seen him, and coming through in the clutch for his father, his lady, and his son. Beautifully shot by Caleb Deschanel, this isn't just a movie, this is ARTWORK.

And who could forget the soundtrack written by Randy Newman, which has found its way into virtually every sports show on the tube at one time or another. Without a doubt, his best handiwork.
