Oscar would like to ask you out on a date.
While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may seem like a highly restrictive group — and it is, if you want to win one of those golden statuettes — the organization is expanding its outreach to regular moviegoers by announcing a summer-long series of outdoor movies.
“Oscars Outdoors” will showcase films on Fridays and Saturdays on a 40-by-20 foot screen in a park the organization built in the heart of Hollywood specifically for the sake of showing movies under the stars. The public is welcome, and the Academy is especially »

I probably could count on one hand the number of times my father took me to the theater to see a film. Nothing against my dad. Movies just weren’t his thing. Because trips were so few and far between, though, I vividly remember the films I somehow convinced him to pay to see. Our first movies together actually were a double feature of Superman II and Clash of the Titans. He took me to see The Karate Kid because a friend told him told it was “like Rocky with teenagers.” (In 1984, neither of us knew who John G. Avildsen was, so that analogy makes me smile.) And, randomly, I talked him into taking me to Renny Harlin’s R-rated Cliffhanger. That was the day I learned my father was petrified of heights, because he watched half of...

Yesterday, HBO announced it would be premiering "41," a documentary about the life of 41st President George H. W. Bush "in his own words" from his summer home in Kennebunkport, Me, on June 14th to commemorate the man's 88th birthday, two days before. Indiewire spoke to executive producer Jerry Weintraub (of "Nashville," "The Karate Kid," the "Ocean's Eleven" remake and many more films) for a few minutes about where the film came from. Weintraub was the subject of his own HBO doc last year -- the Emmy-nominated "His Way," from director Douglas McGrath. Was this a project that you initiated yourself? No, this is a project from a young filmmaker by the name of Jeffrey Roth. He made a film about some astronauts [2007's "The Wonder of It All"] and sent it to President [George H. W. Bush]. And the President invited him to come say hello, so he went to Kennebunkport, met...

When it comes to source material for movie adaptations, a non-fiction book about a director making a film may not be the most obvious of choices. However, when said director is Alfred Hitchcock and said film is his classic 1960 chiller Psycho, things start to get interesting. Add in a stellar cast that includes Oscar-winners Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) and Helen Mirren (The Queen) as Hitch and his wife Alma Reville alongside Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers) as Janet Leigh and James D'Arcy (W.E.) as Anthony Perkins and things start to get really interesting. Finally, throw in this fantastic first look at Anthony Hopkins as the legendary British filmmaker and Hitchcock suddenly becomes one of next year's most intriguing cinematic offerings.
Based on Stephen Rebello's 1990 book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, the film is directed by Sacha Gervasi (Anvil! The Story of Anvil) and sees Hopkins, »

The teams have two days to devise and brand a new fitness class. Who is in good shape to the avoid the boardroom?
Good evening, and welcome to The Apprentice Week 5 liveblog! Tonight our teams have to develop new fitness classes that will bring in tons of new gym fans, all desperate to feel the burn. They then have to create a video and pitch their ideas to health and fitness chains. What could possibly go wrong?
Bearing in mind that Sharkboy Ricky is a professional wrestler and thus no stranger to lycra, I have grave concerns that this evening's show could be truly horrific, even by Apprentice standards.
So what fitness regimes will the team come up with? I'm thinking a 10 minute warm-up of wheeling a suitcase through your local railway station, followed by 20 minutes of screaming into a smartphone and a further 20 minutes of climbing in and out of a people carrier. »

Emily Blunt is in talks to join Tom Cruise in All You Need is Kill directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) and adapted on the graphic novel of the same name. The story is said to be in the vein of Groundhog Day with a twist, centering on a soldier in a war against aliens who finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed. Through the training and battles he experiences in these time loops, he becomes a better soldier. Blunt will play another soldier who fights alongside Cruise. The same report also says Blunt is among the top choices to star alongside Johnny Depp in the Warner Bros. remake The Thin Man with Emma Stone and Kristen Wiig also being among the top contenders. I already detailed that shortlist which you can read about here. [source] We recently learned Paramount dated Darren Aronofsky's Noah »

We all love The Karate Kid. No, not the ridiculously long remake that featured Kung-Fu instead of Karate despite its name, we're talking the original, man! Why are we talking about that? Because some interesting Hitchcock casting news has just broken.
According to Deadline, Daniel-san himself, Ralph Macchio, has signed on to Hitchcock. Macchio will play Psycho screenwriter Joe Stefano. Anthony Hopkins plays Hitchcock, Helen Mirren plays Alma Reville, Scarlett Johansson plays Janet Leigh, and Jessica Biehl plays Vera Miles.
From a Previous Press Release
Fox Searchlight Pictures and Montecito Pictures announced that principal photography for the drama Hitchcock began on April 13th in Los Angeles. The film will star Academy Award® winners Sir Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock and Dame Helen Mirren as his wife, Alma. Sacha Gervasi, whose big screen debut, Anvil! Ralph Macchio hasn.t been seen often on the big screen in recent years. In fact, most of his noteworthy appearances of late have been on television, with a recurring role in ABC.s Ugly Betty, and a guest starring role in an episode of Psych a couple years back. Macchio hasn.t had many notable film roles since his days of The Karate Kid and My Cousin Vinny, but perhaps that.s about to change. Deadline reports that Macchio has been cast in the Sacha Gervasi-directed Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho. The film is based on a book by Stephen Rebello, and as you may have surmised by the title, documents the making of Alfred Hitchcock.s classic thriller Psycho. Anthony Hopkins is on board to play the role of Hitchcock. Macchio will play screenwriter Joe Stefano in the film. In addition to writing the screenplay for Psycho, »

You read that headline correctly. Ralph "Daniel-san" Macchio has joined the cast of Alfred Hitchcock And The Making Of Psycho. He will be playing screenwriter Joseph Stefano. As you can see from the image above, there is a bit of a resemblance. Americans, the country is playing a huge role for a lot of our films these days, whether you notice it on-screen or not. Sometimes it's lavish Chinese-American co-productions like The Karate Kid, which was basically a Chinese travel ad, or sometimes it's money coming in from Chinese funding to get a movie made. You hear about our government owing money to China all the time, but many of our movie prodders are in the same boat-- and now Marvel Entertainment is joining that list. In a press release Marvel and Disney announced that they will be co-producing the upcoming Iron Man 3 with China's Dmg Entertainment, and that some portions of the film will be shot there. Pre-production is already well underway in Wilmington, North Carolina, where the bulk of the movie will be filmed, but apparently they'll be done in time to start a late summer shoot in China. »

"Say Anything" was not particularly successful on its release. John Cusack was an established star of films like "The Sure Thing," but co-star Ione Skye was basically unknown, and director Cameron Crowe was, despite his writing credit on "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" eight years earlier, not a known quantity. As such, despite rave reviews, it only took $20 million at the domestic box office, and a meagre $733,000 internationally -- indeed, in many territories, like the U.K, it went straight to video.
But over time, partly thanks to the success of Crowe's later work like "Jerry Maguire" and "Almost Famous," and partly because of the slow realization of its brilliance, the rom-com -- which follows the fledgling relationship between ambition-free aspiring kickboxer Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) and valedictorian Diane Court (Ione Skye), whose father (John Mahoney) is in trouble with the law -- has become one of the most beloved »

“1 Ruthless Crime Lord, 20 Elite Cops, 30 Floors of Hell.” That is the succinct tagline for Gareth Evans’ ultra-violent The Raid: Redemption and the simple premise for one of the most kick-ass action movies in years. For genre fans, this Indonesian gem is a rarity apart from today’s mass appeal machine. To callously apply an American idiom: The Raid is all killer and no filler.
(Though, to be fair, the police’s Swat team fodder only storm up fifteen floors “of Hell,” not the advertised thirty. Perhaps the tagline was dreamed up in the same Sony Pictures meeting that randomly tacked “Redemption” onto the title, despite the fact that it means and adds nothing.)
Regardless, each floor of carnage resembles a different level of video game violence and Evans deliberately escalates the bloodshed along that brutal progression. From the double taps and emptied assault rifles of Call of Duty to the »

It's official: every single film from the 1980s, aside from Mannequin, Krull, and Weekend at Bernie's has been remade. Here's a quick update on the final half-dozen, all of which will make you complain and whine. Even the good ones. Dirty Dancing (1987) -- A headstrong young woman discovers love and sex-tastical stuff during one nostalgic summer somewhere silly. Who Made It: The writer of It's My Turn (1980) and the director of Three Men and a Little Lady. Also Jennifer Grey and cool dudes like Jerry Orbach and Patrick Swayze. Struggling to work out what decade the film you’re watching is from? If it fulfils the criteria on this list, then it’s probably from the 80s…
Sometimes you’ll get home, turn on the television, and start watching a film halfway through. But even if you don’t know the title, director, or any of the actors involved, there are several very easy ways to tell at a glance whether the movie in question is from the 80s or not. So with this in mind, here’s our handy list of ten tell-tale signs...
Plasma effects
If you wanted to make your audience believe that your movie’s protagonist was travelling back in time, encountering something supernatural or being reduced in size by a miniaturisation ray, there was one special effect to cover any eventuality. Perhaps mimicking those strange plasma globe things that became a popular novelty in the 80s, »
