Trivia

During the shooting of the scene where the duck is used as bait to lure in the wolf, a real wolf was used. However, when shooting the scene, as the wolf approached the hole, the duck quaked and the wolf ran away, and refused to go near the hole again. The scene then had to be shot with another wolf the next day. See more »

Sometimes bleak, sometimes hopeful, always stunning
25 February 2016 | by See all my reviews

It's very atmospheric and there is vivid imagery, but the characters for me were more like storybook characters. Not very three-dimensional and sorta blended into the background of this world. They served a purpose but Rosaleen was clearly the star of the story. This is a movie I'd recommend if you're in the mood for something quiet, mysterious and subtly tragic. It's very memorable even if the story itself takes on a totally different direction than what you'd expect from this well known tale. The soundtrack really brings out the mood and feeling of it all. The cast was chosen wisely. I don't necessarily look at this movie as a werewolf tale so much as it's more about the girl. The wolves are the base of the storyline but their emotional impact is somewhat reserved for the latter part of the movie. Which I felt should have been focused more upon. We met two men and a woman in this story who are werewolves, but never have too much of a chance to really get to know them too well. Which I think was this film's biggest weakness.
