- Alan Bird is a light-hearted Glasgow morning radio DJ working under the stage name Dicky Bird. Two things in combination in the lead up to Christmas make him examine his life. First, he had no idea his live-in girlfriend Maddy, in whose life he was immersed in being her unofficial lookout in her shoplifting capers, was dissatisfied with their relationship until she was literally out the door, she taking with her all her possessions i.e. those things she stole which was most of the items in their apartment. He is heartbroken in the process, he constantly dreaming of her returning into his life. And second, in following an ice cream truck in being attracted to the young woman inside, he witnesses a couple of masked thugs, who in turn recognize him, attack the truck with cricket bats and the like, the two victims inside the truck who seem somewhat nonplussed by the attack. With these two items, he decides to be more serious in his life by using the station's resources, to which he has somewhat official access, to make a documentary about what was going on with the ice cream truck. In the process, he discovers a turf war between two competing factions for the ice cream market in the city. But instead of being behind the scenes in the issue, he becomes enmeshed within it, he acting as a mediary between the two factions whether he or his vehicle want to or not, which only gets more complicated when he learns the history between the two groups.—Huggo
