Based on the true story of Francine Hughes, who was accused of murdering her husband on March 9, 1977 in Dansville, Michigan. She was found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity, and her case created a legal precedent for how domestic violence cases were to be handled in the future.
The role of Francine was originally offered to Cheryl Ladd, but she declined the part.

Francine Hughes, born Francine Moran on 17 August 1947, in Stockbridge, Michigan, died 22 March 2017 in Sheffield, Alabama . She was known as Francine Hughes Wilson, having wed Robert Wilson in 1980 .He died in 2015.
