The profound comment that the Brazilian waiter said to Matthew Hollis (Michael Caine), when Hollis said, "I wasn't thinking what I was doing", was: "It's only when a man is not thinking what he's doing, that you can be sure, he's doing what he's thinking". See more »

Quotes

Victor: "Poor bastard", huh? If I ever get my hands on him, I'll beat him to death, that'll unconfuse him.
Matthew: A beating is not the way, my friend.
Eduardo Marques: He's right, you know?
Matthew: Personally, I prefer torture.

critics can be wrong

This is a fun light-hearted comedy, with magnificent views of Brazil and subtle comic performances. It captures that early eighties feel well. And broaches the subject of a teenage temptress more honestly than the recent version of Lolita.

I can only think that this movie was out of time. probably from a gentler age, but it still hits the mark with me, even watching it now.
