‘Stranger Things’ is Best When Using its Movie Homages as Red Herrings

Paul Reiser isn’t the most identifiable ’80s figure in “Stranger Things.” The future “Mad About You” star saw solid hits during the decade in “Diner,” “My Two Dads,” and two “Beverly Hills Cop” movies, and he has been headlining another ’80s-set modern TV series for the past three years (the criminally under-appreciated “Red Oaks”). But he’s no Winona Ryder. He might even slip behind “Goonies” star Sean Astin in the Reagan-era power rankings. It’s doubtful fans were as excited about seeing Reiser as they were when his character, Dr. Sam Owens, offers Will Byers Reese’s Pieces.

Yet when it comes to homages within “Stranger Things,” few are as integral to the story as recognizing Paul Reiser as the bad guy from “Aliens.” Many have noted the superficial similarities between the characters, but it’s important to note why this casting works beyond a fun homage. It’s beneficial to the story,

Spotted: Your Favorite '90s Star in Stranger Things Season 2

  • BuzzSugar
Image Source: Netflix You may have noticed that a couple of stars from the '80s and '90s joined Stranger Things season two. First there's Sean Astin, of The Goonies and Rudy fame, as Bob the Brain. The second is Will's doctor at the Department of Energy. Dr. Owens is played by prolific comedian Paul Reiser. This 60-year-old New Yorker got his big break in entertainment in the 1982 Barry Levinson film Diner, which costars Kevin Bacon, Tim Daly, Steve Guttenberg, Mickey Rourke, and Daniel Stern. (It's worth a watch if you ever get a chance.) RelatedHas Stranger Things Already Started Planning Season 3? Here's What We Know After appearing in the first two Beverly Hills Cop films, Reiser landed one of the starring roles on the NBC sitcom My Two Dads opposite Greg Evigan and Staci Keanan. Paul Reiser Says He and Helen Hunt Are Open to a Mad About You Revival: 'We're Talking About It'
Paul Reiser is mad about the possibility of a Mad About You revival.

The 60-year-old actor tells People that he and Helen Hunt, who spent 7 seasons playing newlyweds Paul and Jamie in the hit NBC sitcom, are “talking about” bringing Mad About You back to explore the next chapter in their characters lives.

“If we can find the story to tell, and anybody’s interested, I’d be open to it,” Reiser said Thursday at the Stranger Things season 2 premiere in Westwood, California. “You got an idea? Yeah. Come up with some ideas.”

It’s a revelation that comes as a surprise even for Reiser,

10 Things You Didn’t Know about Beverly Hills Cop

Beverly Hills Cop was one of those shows that really wasn’t much of anything special when you first looked at it. But when you actually watched the film you were made privy to a bunch of inside jokes and funny moments that you wouldn’t be able to see just by a glance. Eddie Murphy and the stellar cast of this film are entirely underrated by some but thankfully immortalized by others since the movie itself was pretty hilarious despite giving birth to two ill-fated sequels. Sometimes it’s best to stop when you already managed to make one hit. Her are

‘It’ is a Box Office Sensation — But ‘It’ is Not the Record Breaker Everyone Thinks

‘It’ is a Box Office Sensation — But ‘It’ is Not the Record Breaker Everyone Thinks
Full credit where “It” is due: Currently standing at $266 million through its third weekend, “It” is a stunning success and boosted a domestic box office in serious crisis. A reasonable estimate, if somewhat conservative, is a domestic gross around $325 million.

All this, from a September horror film made for $35 million? That’s a stunning performance. And it’s by far the best-performing Stephen King adaptation. But it’s far from the top horror movie in history.

At $325 million, here’s where “It” will stand in adjusted totals:

Horror films The Exorcist (1973) – $983 million The Sixth Sense (1999) – $512 million House of Wax (1953) – $449 million Psycho (1960) – $379 million Signs (2002) – $345 million It (2017) – $325 million (projected)

House of Wax” was by far the biggest 3D hit in that technique’s first wave. “The Exorcist” is the ninth biggest-grossing of the post-silent era and a social phenomenon in its time. M. Night Shyamalan’s films both had high-end casts and

The Mask: extra nerdy facts about the 1990s Jim Carrey hit

Simon Brew Sep 26, 2017

The Mask started life as a horror movie - but it'd turn into the film that made Jim Carrey a flat-out movie star...

Summer 1994 was an unpredictable time at the box office for Hollywood studios. The year before, Jurassic Park had smashed box office records, but twelve months on, films such as The Flintstones and Beverly Hills Cop 3 were struggling to emulate its success. There were some solid hits: The Client, Maverick and True Lies, for instance. But there was also a sense of things changing. The big money of summer 1994 was being taken by sleeper successes such as Forrest Gump and Speed.

Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy wanted for Beverly Hills Cop 4

Back in June of last year, Paramount Pictures announced that it had dusted off its plans for a fourth instalment in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, tapping Belgian writer-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Black) to helm the newest chapter of the action-comedy series.

Since then, we’ve heard very little about their progress on the film, however Joblo is reporting that the duo recently made an appearance on a Dutch talk show, where they revealed that they were looking at making the film on a $50 million budget and shooting in Detroit.

Furthermore, they said that the film would see Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley as a seasoned Beverly Hills detective, who finds himself clashing with a hardened cop from Detroit. The filmmaker then went on to suggest that they were looking at Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum for the role.

Are you excited about the prospect of Beverly Hills Cop 4?

Tom Hardy, Channing Tatum Wanted For ‘Beverly Hills Cop 4?’

Here’s an interesting rumour that has just found its way online. It appears that none other than arguably Britain’s greatest working actor Tom Hardy and current Kingsman star Channing Tatum are being eyed for the fourth movie in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing Beverly Hills Cop 4 for Paramount, and the two recently appeared on a Dutch TV show where they said that they were allegedly interested in both actors for a key role alongside Eddie Murphy in the planned film.

Joblo.com report the news that the pair appeared on “De wereld draait door” chat show, and said that they had held a sort of “audition for Eddie Murphy” for the film.

Joblo reports that the planned sequel, produced by Jerry Brucheimer, ‘would be made on a $50 million dollar budget, they will shoot primarily in Detroit, and that they

Beverly Hills Cop 4 Targets Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum

Beverly Hills Cop 4 Targets Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum
It's been more than 20 years since Eddie Murphy cleaned up the streets as Axel Foley in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, but that may change somewhat soon with the impending arrival of Beverly Hills Cop 4. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Black) were hired on last year to helm Beverly Hills Cop 4 and development on the project has been slow but sure. Now, the directors have their sights set on a couple of huge stars to possibly star alongside Eddie Murphy in the form of Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy.

As reported by JoBlo, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah were recently speaking about Beverly Hills Cop 4 on a talk show in Holland called The World Turns. During the chat, they revealed that they want a big name to work alongside Eddie Murphy in the long-awaited sequel. They specifically name-dropped both Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 is on patrol to cast a big name as Axel's partner

  • JoBlo
For my money, Martin Brest's Beverly Hills Cop was one of the best action comedies to come out of the 1980s. Eddie Murphy was in his prime, Judge Reinhold and John Ashton made for the perfect bumbling officer duo and Lisa Eilbacher delivered a smart and sexy performance as Jenny Summers in the film. It's a classic piece of cinema that I make a point of watching at least once a year, if not more.... Read More...

Mel B wanted to tell the world she's single ... but to paraphrase Bill Clinton, "single" doesn't always mean single. ‘Ghosted’ Ep Adam Scott: It’s “The Baby Of ‘Midnight Run’ & ‘Stranger Things'”–TCA

New sci-fi horror comedy Ghosted will be in part an homage to the buddy comedies of the 80s, writer and Ep Kevin Etten said during a panel at Fox’s TCA. “It’s things like Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop,” Etten said. “Then we were influenced by recent movies like This is the End. Comic-Con 2017 Interview: Craig Robinson, Adam Scott and Ally Walker Talk Ghosted

  • DailyDead
Set to premiere later this fall on Fox is Ghosted, a paranormal-infused comedy which co-stars Craig Robinson and Adam Scott as a pair of recruits for an organization tasked with investigating unknown phenomena in the Los Angeles area. While in San Diego for this year’s Comic-Con, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Scott and Robinson, as well as with their other Ghosted co-star Ally Walker, about their involvement in the upcoming show, what we can expect from their characters, and much more.

Ghosted arrives on Fox on Sunday, October 1st (just in time for the Halloween season).

Ally, what was the appeal to you coming into this show? Was it your character? Or maybe the actors you’d be working with?

Ally Walker: It was a really fresh idea. It's a simple idea, but I've never seen it before and I know Adam, from Tell Me You Love Me too,

Ghosted Cast Talks X-Files Crossover Potential, Guest Star Meryl Streep?!
Adam Scott and Craig Robinson, of Fox’s new comedy Ghosted, already seem like a match made in sitcom heaven — but it isn’t the first time that the former Parks and Rec and Office employees have appeared on screen together.

“We knew each other from Hot Tub Time Machine 2,” Robinson reminds Michael Ausiello during a sit-down at TVLine’s Comic-Con interview suite, to which Scott deadpans, “You’re welcome.” All jokes aside, Scott is eager for people to see Ghosted, which he says harkens back to classic 1980s buddy comedies such as Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters. But
