IMDbTV Pick: Showtime's "Penny Dreadful"

The subtle trick Showtime's "Penny Dreadful is that it is far less about the blood, gore and the specter of gruesome death than the sharp pain and exhilarating pleasure of living, and the terror of feeling alone even in close company. Read our review in the May Picks section.

Storyline

Former major-leaguer Tony Micelli and his daughter Samantha arrive at the Connecticut household of executive Angela Bower, where Tony has taken a job as live-in housekeeper. The Bowers are an interesting family, to say the least. Angela is uptight and obsessed with her work. Her son Jonathan is shy and lacks self-esteem, and her mother, Mona, is a man-hungry vixen. Tony soon wins them over with his laid-back style, and the Bowers soon begin to loosen up. Over time, romantic tensions begin to surface between Angela and Tony, and we see the children grow up. Trivia

ABC originally planned to cancel the show at the end of the seventh season but the producers were able to convince the network to renew the show for an eighth season. As part of the deal to renew the show (and to revive fan interest) it was decided to base the entire eight season around Tony and Angela finally becoming a couple. When ratings for the eighth season failed to increase, the show was cancelled. See more »

Quotes

Angela: Well, we got on a plane you know swish, swoosh.
Tony: Yeah, well, it sounds like something happened in between the swish and the swoosh.
Angela: Well, we went to Las Vegas, and we got married but I thought we got the marriage annulled the next day?
Angela's first Husband: No. These are just the papers that divided up the garbage collection. Angela, we're still married.
Mona Robinson: [bursts into laughter] And to think all of this time that you were married to Michael you were a bigamist.

If you were alive in the 80s you have at least heard of this show
7 October 2002 | by (Seattle) – See all my reviews

I am so glad to see reruns of this show again. It is so much fun to watch, and it's nostalgic. I like all the characters except for Danny (when he was older his voice sounds....well we won't go there) As the seasons go on, though, Angela and Tony are the main focus of the show anyway. I don't get the whole Billy thing, why do shows always do that? It's almost a guarantee that it's going to be dead in its track within a year or two. Anyway it did run for a long time, and I love the final episode. You get to decide how they end. They need to do a reunion show.
