Canada's 1st truly aboriginal show, 21 August 2001
Author: clay-1 from Oshawa, ONT

This CBC TV show which ran from about 1980 to 1987 was about the lives of Canadian Aboriginal peoples in Northern Ontario. Most of the townsfolk live in a reserve on a large northern lake and details stories of the towns main characters; most of these being teenagers. The opening and closing theme music by Buffy Ste Marie is also very memorable. If you watch the modern TV show "The Lofters" you will recognize Trevor Smith (aka Tre Smith), who played the character "Rabbit" on Spirit Bay in the mid 80's. This show was the original stepping stone for almost every famous native Canadian actor, including: Graham Greene, Gary Farmer, Tantoo Cardinal and Shirley Cheechoo. Other native produced TV shows like North of 60, The Rez and Moccassin Flats owe some gratitude to this show.
