'Baywatch' Review: Bring on the Beach Bods, Boobs and Bodily Fluids

24 May 2017 8:23 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

There's a point in this big-screen version of the ultra-cheesy beef- and cheesecake Nineties TV show in which Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Efron both play with a dead guy's dick and nutsack. We could not make this up if we tried. No one, including original stars David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson, ever toyed with floppy genitalia, at least not onscreen. But that was then. The new, anatomically correct Baywatch is rated R. How else could you distinguish it from the softcore tide of hot lifeguards, all running down »

Film Review: ‘Baywatch’

23 May 2017 12:01 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Baywatch,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, is a stupidly entertaining trash folly, the kind that could only be made today: an obscenity-and-insult-laced, aggressively “competent” adaptation of a 25-year-old TV show that manages to repackage every aspect of the series except, perhaps, the reason it was popular in the first place. And what was that reason? If Rodney Dangerfield were around, he might say, “There were two reasons!” But actually there’s a bit more to it.

Baywatch,” which premiered at the tail-end of the 1980s (and stumbled out of the gate, becoming a hit in syndication the way “Star Trek” did), was a muscle-beach soap opera that anticipated the sexy-youth-kitsch-for-adults appeal of “Beverly Hills 90210.” It was also an L.A. crime series where the law enforcers wore spandex swimwear; a cheeseball star vehicle that revamped the camp-stud Ken-doll mystique of the former “Knight Rider” hero David Hasselhoff; and, yes, »

The Predator: Edward James Olmos joins Shane Black's sequel

Battlestar Galactica's Edward James Olmos joins Boyd Holbrook and Olivia Munn on the set of The Predator...

The amount of 80s nostalgia circling The Predator, a semi-sequel and reboot of the beloved action saga about one ugly freakin’ alien and the humans he hunts, just got a little richer. After all, Shane Black, who had a supporting role in James McTernan’s original Predator (1987), is writing and directing the movie. Now Edward James Olmos too is joining the project.

Olmos, who came to the attention of many genre fans for appearing in Blade Runner (1982), has had a long career as a character actor, appearing in Battlestar Galactica, Miami Vice, and Dexter, among many other projects. He is also expected to reprise his role as the replicant-hunting Gaff in this autumn’s much belated sequel, Blade Runner 2049.

In The Predator, Olmos will be playing what The »

Film Review: ‘Bitter Harvest’

23 February 2017 3:42 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

TV spots for “Bitter Harvest” claim that the movie reveals “Russia’s darkest secret.” That’s a catchy pitch for a thoroughly over-baked and blatantly fictionalized 1930s-set costume drama arriving at a moment when anti-Russian sentiment has reached its highest point since the Cold War. The scandal in question is the Holodomor — which is not a secret at all, but rather a widely recognized atrocity through which millions of Ukrainians died of starvation as a direct consequence of Joseph Stalin’s policies.

Like last year’s Kirk Kerkorian-backed “The Promise,” which aimed to be the “Doctor Zhivago” or Armenian genocide epics, “Bitter Harvest” represents a form of ambitious generations-later vindication, for which artists of Ukrainian decent — writer-director George Mendeluk, co-writer Richard Bachynsky-Hoover and producer Ian Ihnatowycz — joined together to expose horrific crimes that went suppressed for so long. And while “Bitter Harvest” will undoubtedly serve to raise awareness, there »

What Is an Egot? The Grand Slam of Show Business — Explained

24 January 2017 10:17 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

It’s the most coveted honor in all of Hollywood: the Egot.

Representing the top awards in television (Emmy), music (Grammy), film (Oscar), and theater (Tony), it’s considered the grand slam of show business — a four of a kind sweep that only the rarest of stars have been able to achieve.

The term was coined by Miami Vice actor Philip Michael Thomas, who first told it to the Associated Press in 1984 at the height of the NBC action show’s success. “That stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony,” he said. “Hopefully in the next five years I will win all those awards. »

‘Sleepless’ Review: Jamie Foxx Stars In a Very Tired Remake Of a Modern Action Masterpiece

13 January 2017 7:53 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The listless, shoddy sort of remake where it feels like all of the characters have already seen the movie they’re in, “Sleepless” reduces one of the best action films of the 21st century into one of the most benign. Released in 2011, Frederic Jardin’s severely under-seen “Sleepless Night” is a French-language brawler with universal appeal — bruising, relentless, and blissfully frenetic, it remains a masterclass in how to layer cinematic mayhem so that every new punch lands where the last one left off.

Needless to say, a lot has been lost in translation. Directed by Baran bo Odar (“The Silence”) and designed to swindle money from starry-eyed January theatergoers who’ve been shut out of “Hidden Figures” or “La La Land” but might as well see something because they’ve already trekked to the multiplex and paid the babysitter for the night, this lifeless photocopy proves that American exceptionalism is »
