Season 1

Season 1, Episode 1: If I Were a Carpenter

11 November 1983
Geordies Dennis,Oz and Neville travel to Dusseldorf for brick-laying work,meeting along the way Barry,a motor-bike riding electrician from Wolverhampton. They refuse to give cheeky carpenter Wayne a lift in Oz's car but it breaks down on the autobahn and Wayne goes whizzing past them,having hitched a ride in a lorry. On the site they meet West country man Bomber but there is only work for two brickies so Neville claims to be a carpenter. However he has an accident with the saw and decides to return to England. A night on the tiles soon changes his mind when he wakes up to find he has acquired a tattoo that states 'Lotte',the night before.

Season 1, Episode 2: Who Won the War Anyway?

18 November 1983
Neville is about to be sacked for his lying but becomes a hero when he raises the alarm after seeing an unexploded bomb,unearthed by the diggers. He befriends Helmut Fischer,a German co-worker,and meets his family,the father having fought against Neville's father in the war. Oz's tactless remarks about the British winning the war land him in trouble and he is dismissed but the Germans actually go on strike in order for him to be reinstated. Liverpudlian Moxey joins the work-force and is welcomed with open arms because he is the only one of them who owns a darts board.

Season 1, Episode 3: The Girls They Left Behind

25 November 1983
Oz's wife Marjorie learns of her husband's whereabouts from Dennis's wife and writes to ask for money. Oz,unhappy that she tracked him down,returns the letter as Not Known at This Address. When the wages belatedly arrive Dennis and Oz go to watch Sunderland F.C. play a football match and Oz gets drunk,ending up on the plane back to Newcastle with the Sunderland fans. On hearing this the others send his wages to Newcastle. He is not amused because he has returned to Germany and he and the money have passed each other on the way.

Season 1, Episode 4: Suspicion

2 December 1983
Everybody is suspect when Neville's money and Oz's watch go missing. Wayne is flush but then he did win money from the others at cards and buys German girlfriend Ingrid a necklace. Later Ingrid meets and befriends Neville and gives him the necklace and he is prime suspect after being seen leaving a pawn-shop (where he took the necklace to get money to send to his wife.) Oz hatches a plan to stain a 100 Deutsche Mark note and catch the culprit but the thief does not take the bait and the lads fail to identify them.

Season 1, Episode 5: Home Thoughts from Abroad

9 December 1983
Bomber hears from his wife that their teen-aged daughter Tracy has run away from home so he returns to Bristol to look for her, though in the mean time she turns up in Dusseldorf and the lads hide her in their hut whilst they alert Bomber to return. She tries it on with Wayne but,after he has turned her down,admits she does it for the attention. Later Neville is discovered moon-lighting at the local Indian restaurant.

Season 1, Episode 6: The Accused

16 December 1983
Neville is arrested and charged with assault after a woman he walked home from a club is beaten up but the British and German workmen all join in to raise the money for his bail before his wife Brenda flies out to see why he did not phone her. Dennis remembers that the girl had a big row with her boyfriend and he and Helmut track down the real culprit,proving Neville's innocence - though he is still at pains to keep his tattoo from Brenda.

Season 1, Episode 7: Private Lives

30 December 1983
With his divorce proceedings underway Dennis is dating Dagmar from the site office and he takes her to spend the night at the Intercontinental hotel. Meanwhile Barry and Wayne chat up two Swedish air hostesses whom they plan to meet at the hotel but Oz plays a trick on them by ringing the hotel and leaving a message for the pair to go to room 612. Here they meet,not the Swedish girls as expected but a young couple who accuse them of being robbers and Dennis has to sort things out.

Season 1, Episode 8: The Fugitive

6 January 1984
On their way to a fishing trip some of the workers pick up a young lad called Colin who is hitch-hiking. He tells them that he is a student,sleeping rough so they persuade him to come back to the site and ask for a job. He is,however,very secretive and eventually they discover why. He is an army deserter wanted by the military police for going AWOL. Eventually he is arrested,as is Barry because he has been trying to grow a beard and his appearance makes the police think he is a tramp.

Season 1, Episode 9: The Alien

13 January 1984
The lads reluctantly bail out Magowan,a violent Irish worker jailed for fighting and reluctantly allow him to move in with them after he has been thrown out of his hostel. They are forming a darts team but do not want him to join though they are too scared to tell him,especially after he has assaulted Neville for asking for his bail money back. However,when Neville sees the boss,Herr Grunwald,at a porn cinema,the lads coerce him into sacking Magowan and getting rid of him for good.

Season 1, Episode 10: Last Rites

20 January 1984
Oz has developed a side line in selling pornographic videos. When a friend of Dennis's,Hedley Irwin,dies Oz plans to smuggle the videos in Hedley's coffin ass it is returned to England. However it transpires that Hedley was kicked out of the army for selling supplies to the Russians and his family do not want to accept his remains. As a result the coffin is cremated in Germany - with Oz's videos inside it.

Season 1, Episode 11: The Lovers

27 January 1984
Oz finds love with a tasty German girl by the name of Uli after Wayne makes him out as being a rich tycoon's son. But it turns out he isn't the only one being dishonest. Meanwhile Barry comes up with an idea to make the hut more homely.

Dennis's wife announces that she is coming over to Germany - what will it mean for his divorce, and his relationship with Dagmar? Oz wonders about the power of reincarnation, and Wayne falls in love with a woman, not just into her bed.

Season 1, Episode 13: When the Boat Goes Out

10 February 1984
Work on the site ends with a bang as Barry's bike explodes, demolishing the hut and destroying most of the lads' possessions. As the smoke subsides, the crew decides who will stay on in Germany and who will head for home

Season 2, Episode 1: The Return of the Seven: Part 1

21 February 1986
The boys have returned from Germany and gone their separate ways. Dennis has set up his own business, Oz has been to the Falklands and back, Neville is unemployed, Wayne has entered a disastrous marriage, Moxey has been in prison, and Bomber has returned to wrestling.

Season 2, Episode 2: The Return of the Seven: Part 2

28 February 1986
Dennis returns to Newcastle where he meets up with Oz. Unhappy at not being met at the airport, Ally is even less pleased to find his Jaguar has had a run-in with a skip.

The lads take a step up in the world when they are asked to convert Thornley Manor into timeshare units. But their arrival in the village sets alarm bells ringing, especially for the local policeman.

Season 2, Episode 4: Another Country

When work at the Manor is stopped because it is a listed building, the hapless brickies decide to go to the local village, where they are treated with suspicion.

Season 2, Episode 5: A Home from Home

The magnificent seven are forced to camp out in Thornley Manor. Wayne is given the cold shoulder by the other lads and is forced to start thinking seriously about how to regain his popularity.

Season 2, Episode 6: Cowboys

28 March 1986
Plumber Harry Blackburn is mad about country and western music, and when he joins the boys Oz regales him with his tales of Nashville and Merle Haggard. The truth comes out about Dennis' debts and the lads all go on strike. Ally, annoyed to here of this sends in his toughest boys to sort them out. The eight builders of course, show them the road back to the North East.

Season 2, Episode 7: No Sex Please, We're Brickies

4 April 1986
Work at Thornley Manor is over and the lads take a break before leaving for Spain. Oz uses the opportunity to visit home and hits on the barmy idea of kidnapping his son, determined to prevent him from being taken overseas by wife Marjorie - but makes the mistake of roping Wayne in to help.

In a rare moment of tenderness, Oz makes an attempt to save his marriage and get to know his son. Wayne has marital worries as well, but Dennis seems to be getting on fine with girlfriend Christine.

The lads move their holiday gear into the wrong Spanish villa and decide to go skinny-dipping in the swimming pool - much to the outrage of the real occupants, who arrive unexpectedly.

Season 3, Episode 1: Bridging the Gap

Many years have passed since the lads completed the building job in Spain for Ally Fraser when all bar one of them are brought back together in Middlesborough for Oz's wake - but someone puts in a surprise appearance with a proposal for a very ambitious project for them to undertake.

The lads make a start on their new venture, with Dennis resuming his former role as the group's gaffer. In a twist of irony, they decide to employ foreign workers to keep costs down, but it seems very unlikely that that will prove to be the only source of their problems.

There is a major financial hiccough with the project when the buyer falls through, Barry gets suspicious about his business partner, Neville causes problems when he speaks to a journalist and Oz gets a big surprise when he goes to see his son perform in a club.

The lads are arrested by the DEA, but manage to get bail. Work on the project grinds to a halt when there are problems getting appropriate labor, and Oz manages to rub some locals up the wrong way on a night out. Meanwhile, the discovery of a body in the Tees has the British police looking for Moxey.

Season 3, Episode 6: An Inspector Calls

Joe's son and his fellow work crew arrive and start work on the construction, but it comes to light that a key part of the shipment never made it to America. Dennis returns to England to strike a deal with Grainger for the missing part, while a policeman from England arrives looking for Moxey.

Season 4, Episode 1: Britannia Waives the Rules

3 January 2004
Barry is detained for questioning while the rest of the lads return to the UK courtesy of the British Consulate in St Petersburg. A Russian crime lord, whose mansion they have been working on is blown up just as they are finishing the job. But their brush with the Diplomatic Service prompts them to sign up with OED, the Government department that handles building contracts for British Embassies all over the world.

Season 4, Episode 2: Our Men in Havana

10 January 2004
The lads start work refurbishing a large derelict property to become the Ambassador's new residence. Wyman has a very memorable experience on their first night out on the town in Havana. The next evening, at a drinks reception for the Cuban National Ballet Company, Neville finally meets his contact and Oz finds himself strangely captivated by the Prima Ballerina.

Season 4, Episode 3: A Gift from Fidel

17 January 2004
Neville's contact gives him a ticket for the boxing event, while Oz makes a date with the Prima Ballerina and Wyman joins the Embassy Scuba Club. But before any of them can make their appointments, the lads have to pick up an old bath for the Ambassador's new residence.

Season 4, Episode 4: Moonlighting

Neville makes a new friend, Wyman starts seeing a girl from the Embassy and Oz persuades the others to help renovate his Cuban girlfriend's home. However, Dennis begins to feel everyone's avoiding him, and his suspicions are further aroused when the work-rate on the site drops off.

Season 4, Episode 5: Dangerous Liaisons

Barry has been arrested after the car crash, but now the authorities begin to suspect he could be a spy. Oz's relationship also attracts special attention, Wyman's mother turns up unannounced and Neville has a secret mission.

Season 4, Episode 6: The End of the Affair

Neville learns the truth about his contact, Wyman's mother comes up with a plan to smuggle Oz's girlfriend out of Cuba while Barry continues to languish in jail under suspicion of espionage.

Season 5, Episode 1: Au Revoir: Part 1

28 December 2004
Following a riot in the African country where they are working at an embassy, Oz sustains an injury to his backside whilst sheltering a female embassy official with whom he has been having sex, from a bomb. The group gets air-lifted and ends up in Laos to undertake more embassy work. However Bomber has stayed behind in England with his family and sends his greetings to his colleagues.

Season 5, Episode 2: Au Revoir: Part 2

29 December 2004
Barry is reunited with Tatiana, his Russian wife, who has come out to Thailand for a reconciliation but soon afterwards he is kidnapped and a ransom of 100,000 dollars demanded. A man claims to know where he is being held and drives them to a village but then they are all kidnapped by local guerillas. However they steal the guerilla leader's phone and summon help, discovering that the brains behind the plot is spymaster Tarquin, whom they met in Russia. After such excitement they are glad to resume work in a peaceful location, returning to Germany.
