One of the best Hong Kong horrors of the 80s--All your needs covered
14 November 2005 | by (Bear, Delaware) – See all my reviews

Sir Run Run Shaw (Blade Runner, Bamboo House of Dolls, Five Deadly Venoms) produced this Hong Kong exploitation/horror flick that is among the best of the '80's wave of Chinese chunk-chuckers. I could not express to you how deeply I love this low-budget supernatural revenge flick. If you have any love at all for the type of genre-mashing, off-the-wall, and extreme flicks that Hong Kong does differently than any other place on the planet, you'll want to check this sweet flick out.

Philip Ko Fei (Eastern Condors) is a taxi driver and a newlywed. One night on a dark road, he hits a grave-robber who's being pursued. The guy's gone when he gets out to check, only to reappear in the back seat. This is going to cause some turmoil because the grave-robber's a Taoist sorceror (bad luck--wouldn't be surprised if he was Thai because Thais are always the black magic baddies in these films) and now the fates are lined up to ruin our boy's life. His blackjack dealing wife, Irene, starts cheating on him with the new slick guy in town, Anthony Fang, who's also married. When their little tryst starts heating up, the li'l woman starts talking about leaving their spouses to be together, which gets her ass planted on the sidewalk while the two of them are driving. That's when she decides to call dispatch for a ride home from her hubby. But before he gets there, she gives chase to some mean young pervs out looking for a good time. The thugs chase her through an abandoned mansion, sexually assaulting her, ripping her clothes, etc. Then she gets nudged out the old window. Kersplat. But this is only the beginning of the depravity.

Taxi-driver hubby seeks out the sorceror he hit that one night so' he can conjure up some bad juju on the creeps who caused his wife's death. Hell, why not? Cops can't pin the murder on anybody. "Hows about some old fashioned corpse-stealing?" asks the old sorceror. So they dig up the wife and the sorceror brings her ghost out to revenge itself on all the bad guys, but it also needs our taxi-driving friend's blood and energy to do its deadly worst.

What follows is some of the most insane goings on ever to happen in a horror flick. But the story really keeps a dark vibe throughout the gory proceedings and never falls into some awkward comedy mode or romance or police procedural as some Hong Kong films do. It's relentless real horror. We see how destructive revenge is on Irene's husband as he sees it out to the very end.

The special effects in this film are pretty impressive--low-budget, often unconvincing, but very creative and there's plenty to look at. Many are gore fx and gruesome creature effects and it all looks pretty good. And we get plenty of bare boobs and pube closeups so Seeding of a Ghost works as a nice exploitationer as well. Also worth mentioning is Norman Chu, who plays Anthony Fang. This guy has been in some of my favorite flicks--Golden Swallow, Duel To The Death, Lewd Lizard, We're Going to Eat You, and Inner Senses--and he sure is welcome here. He plays a disinterested, cool smooth guy so well that you almost forget he's one of the villains.

If you ever have a chance to see this one, don't pass it up. Very highly recommended. 10 out of 10.
