TV News: CBS to Solve More Crimes With Anthony Zuiker’s Cyber Crimes

8 December 2009 6:31 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

I always wondered what War Games/Hackers the TV show would be like and I am not suprised it becomes something in the vein of a crime solving serial from the network that does it best, CBS. With concerns over cyber crimes growing in recent years, particularly when it comes to cyber terrorism this makes for an interesting show idea.

CSI creator Anthony Zuiker is developing Cyber Crimes for CBS. The project has been given a script plus penalty commitment. The hourlong procedural drama centers on a newly formed government agency that fights the modern onslaught of Internet- and technology-driven offenses. I like the concept and urge the creator to use a combination of those hip young MIT grads with the edgy punk hackers with old school cryptologists.

Zuiker created the project and will exec produce. Zuiker’s script goes one step beyond the government, which doesn’t yet have »

Should Firefox Hold the Key to Your Identity With a 1-Click ID Button for the Web?

25 November 2009 11:30 AM, PST | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

See that little login window on the top right of this Web page? Mozilla, through Firefox, wants to do away with it--for all the best reasons. Mozilla's plan will simplify how you log into sites because, lets face it, IDing yourself should be easier.

The information comes directly from Mozilla's User Experience chief Aza Raskin's personal blog, and it starts with the lofty suggestion that "Identity will be one of the defining themes in the next five years of the Web." Hard to argue with that, given the explosion in user interactivity that the Web 2.0 phenomenon kicked off, and the fact that, as Raskin points out, "Nearly every site has a concept of a user account, registration and identity."

"Where's the problem with this?" you may well ask, since that seems all pretty natural to someone reading/interacting on the Web these days, what with endless blogs to comment on »

Hackers Unlock New 'Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2' Multiplayer Modes?

20 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

If "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" hackers really have unlocked a hidden game mode called "Global Thermonuclear War," it would be a fitting tribute Matthew Broderick's character in the 1983 movie "WarGames" who famously did the same thing on a government computer. "Gtw" is one of three multiplayer modes that some players claim to have found locked within "MW2," possibly as content planned for a later release as Dlc.

"Gtw," "One Flag Ctf" and "VIP" are the titles for three modes tinkerers claim to have unearthed in "MW2," according to Modern Warfail 2.

The first mode, as the name implies, involved hunting down a nuclear bomb. Apparently the bomb detonates one you've found it, though, so I'm not sure if there's more to that concept or if it's supposed to offer some greater moral lesson about nuclear warfare.

"One Flag Ctf," meanwhile, is traditional and fairly self-explanatory. There's one flag in »

New TV on DVD releases this week

2 November 2009 3:06 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

If you loved The Rockford Files and you own the season sets, you'll probably want to buy Volume 1 of the movies (four in this batch) that is being released tomorrow. They weren't as good as the series, of course (sort of like the Spenser: For Hire movies that Robert Urich did after that series ended), but they're actually pretty good.

And season 6 of Kate & Allie is out. That reminds me: I still have to get season 5.

Afro Samurai - Complete Murder Sessions The Clone Wars - Season 1 Doctor Who - The War Games and The Black Guardian Trilogy Edge of Darkness - The Complete BBC Series

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for The Spy Next Door, starring everyone's favorite martial arts maniac Jackie Chan as a secret agent undercover and acting like a mild-mannered guy who, while babysitting his neighbor's kids, winds up having to fight off secret agents after one of the kids inadvertently downloads some secret code. Don't you hate it when that happens? You meant to download the latest episode of The Office on Hulu when all of a sudden you end up accidentally hacking into the Pentagon? Oh internet, you so crazy.

Also starring in this War Games meets Spy Kids meets Adventures in Babysitting-type action-comedy are Billy Ray Cyrus and George Lopez, and Brian Levant (Jingle All the Way, Snow Dogs, Are We There Yet?) is the man behind the camera. As an added bonus, Moviefone just premiered the trailer for »

Paramount Adapting Techno Thriller Daemon

20 May 2009 3:40 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We walk a fine line at Dread Central as far as deciding what's horror, what's sci-fi, and what's enough of a hybrid to warrant our covering it. Considering the novel Daemon bills itself as "a harrowing journey through the dark crawl spaces of the modern world," we thought its film adaptation merits at least a mention.

Variety compares the story to WarGames in its "exploration of themes of man vs. machine". Walter Parkes (who coincidentally wrote 1983's WarGames and has only one other feature script credit, 1992's Sneakers) and David Digilio (creator of the much too short-lived TV series "Traveler") will pen the script for Paramount Pictures.

The official Daemon website provides the following synopsis:

It all begins when one man's obituary appears online. . .

Matthew Sobol was a legendary computer game designer — the architect behind half a dozen popular online games. His premature death from brain cancer depressed both gamers »

Five Ticking Time Bomb Flicks That Predate ‘Angels & Demons’

13 May 2009 9:05 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

This week in theaters, Tom Hanks plays a Harvard professor working against the clock to save the fate of the Roman Catholic Church in “Angels & Demons.” When the Pope and his successor candidates begin dropping like flies, the chances of his success start dwindling along with them. A conniving underground society like the Illuminati is always a great way to keep the tension going in the face of a high-stakes doomsday scenario like the destruction of Catholicism. Here are five more time-bomb scenarios that play out with maximum drama on film, earning each of them a spot on the watch list of the MTV Movies Blog.

She plays the role of Blair Cramer in One Life to Live - in over 300 episodes! He's done everything in his power to control the life of his ex-wife, Britney Spears! One of his very first movies was WarGames, a cult classic now. He's famous for many reasons, but perhaps you'll remember him best as Inspector Gadget? We're not quite sure what originally made her famous, but she's a household name, sort of like Madonna, but we call her Rosie. First up, Sirius Black of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Besides its notability as the year that your correspondent was born, 1983 is also known for bringing about Matthew Broderick's career with WarGames, a film about an innocent, young computer hacker (Broderick) who plays with the computer in charge of America's nuclear arsenal and inadvertently starts the countdown to World War III. This is all resolved with a friendly game of tic-tac-toe, an infinite number of computed stalemates, and the message that you can't hug your children with nuclear arms. DiCaprio Remaking War Games?

18 February 2009 8:45 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Is Leonardo DiCaprio remaking John Badham’s 1983’s computer-gone-amok movie “War Games”? Yes, says Production Weekly, via something called Twitter. I haven’t a clue what Twitter is, but you kids and your fancy computers seem to have taken a shine to it like infants addicted to crack. So why remake “War Games”? Silly question, silly. It’s not “why”, it’s “why not” in Hollywood these days. Moviehole has more on this here remake: Leonardo DiCaprio is set to produce a remake of the 1983 classic “WarGames”, says Production Weekly, via their Twitter feed. No other information is given - other than it’s with MGM. Universal recently produced a sequel to John Badham’s original - “WarGames : The Dead Code”, which premiered in lounge rooms last year. The 1983 original starred Matthew Broderick as a high school nerd who is really good at computers, who decides the only way »

WarGames Follow-Ups: If at First You Don't Succeed, Try Again?

17 February 2009 6:45 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I thought we'd already been through this... The initial rumors and first word of a WarGames sequel, the silence followed by the inevitable continuation of the project, and the ill-reviewed and mostly ignored result. But this is Hollywood, and at least they doggedly stick to their try and try again mentality, and this time, there's a good chance that this won't be an ignorable project.

While Production Weekly is subscriber-only, they have a Twitter feed that shares little morsels of news, like the following report: "Leonardo DiCaprio looking to reboot the 80's thriller "War Games" at MGM." Yes, move over Matt Lanter, Leo wants to to do his own take on WarGames. But this won't be a sequel, this will be one of those dreaded reboots. First Ralph Maccio gets replaced with Jaden Smith, now Matthew Broderick will be replaced with ... I shudder to think.

Yesterday we told you about some cool updates happening over on Production Weekly's Twitter feed. As if in response to our praise of their greatness, they've now overloaded their feed with all kinds of cool news on upcoming projects which, every site on the internet is now snatching up with vigor. We are such trendsetters. Of the great updates being posted there tonight the one that most has my attention is the news that Leonardo DiCaprio is "looking to reboot the 80's thriller WarGames at MGM." The original WarGames released in 1983, starred a very young Matthew Broderick as a kid who hacks into a super intelligent military computer. The computer goes haywire and starts confusing games with reality, and pushes the world to the bring of World War III.
