Storyline

When everyone in town receives invitations to Ataru's wedding, they are shocked to see that his sweetheart Lum is not the bride. Eventually they learn that when Ataru was playing games as a little boy, he stepped on a girl's shadow. Unbeknownst to him, the girl was from extraterrestrial culture where stepping on one's shadow is a form of marriage proposal, and now she and her family have come back to see that Ataru keeps his promise. If he manages to get out of this without being killed by her folks, he'll still have to avoid being torn apart by the hands of Lum. Written by Jean-Marc Rocher <rocher@fiberbit.net>

Trivia

There is an abundance of references to roses in the film. In Japanese, the word for rose if "bara". The capital of Elle's planet is Baran. Elle's nanny is Babara, a play on the Japanese words "bara" and "baba" (old woman), and possibly the Western name "Barbera" as well. Elle's master-of-disguise is named Rose. During the flashback sequence, the young Elle can be seen wearing a nametag that reads: "Baragumi Eru" (Elle of the Rose Group). In Japan, kindergarten classes within the same school may have distinctive names, such as "sakuragumi" (cherry blossom class), or "momogumi" (peach class). See more »

Nice, but not the best Lum-film...
20 December 1999 | by (Germany) – See all my reviews

A nice theatrical adaption of the comic series, though definetly not the best of all six. A little slow-paced sometimes and the romantic songs in between don't quite fit into the slapsticky atmosphere. The Japanese voices are great; especially Ataru's, switching from deep macho-like murmur to manical screeching any time. The animation is what is to be expected from the early eighties, and the character design is more like the original drawings than the designs of the succeeding films are. If this film is your first "Lum-experience", you just might be a little confused, but not necessarily for the worse. Readers of the comic and fans of the TV-series should not expect the silly meta-humor or the quick action they're used to, but a story that concentrates more on the semi-romantical relationship of the two main characters.
