This movie doesn't mean to accurately describe a dark era of French history. Rather, it turns everything and everyone into a laughing matter.
Nothing in this movie should be taken seriously for it is a parody. It's actually entertaining to watch a movie played by actors obviously having a lot of fun being a part of it. Great one-liners ("Z'etes pas fins vous les Allemands!"), plenty of absurd and (as a result) funny moments, solid acting led by Christian Clavier and Jacqueline Maillan and a final ten minutes that are absolutely brilliant.
It ranks as one of my favorite french movies. One thing though, you probably have to be French to fully appreciate the quality of that comedy.
