26 years ago today, the Griswold family cemented their place in the pantheon Christmas movies. The third installment of National Lampoon’s “Vacation” comedy series features plenty of holiday hijinks ensuing — including a squirrel in the Christmas tree, a sled ride made dangerous by an experimental substance, and a bit of kidnapping — as Chevy Chase’s Clark Griswold tries to keep it all together in front of his siblings. Fun fact: “Christmas Vacation” was one of two Christmas movies released in 1989, the other being John Hancock’s “Prancer.” Johnny Galecki, a.k.a. Rusty Griswold (now better known as Leonard from “The Big Bang Theory”) appeared in both of these holiday movies. Other notable December 1 happenings in pop culture history: • 1887: The first Sherlock Holmes story, “A Study in Scarlet,” was published in “Beeton’s Christmas Annual” • 1903: “The Great Train Robbery,” notable for many firsts in filmmaking, had its »

“Annie Hall” has been named the funniest screenplay in voting by the members of the Writers Guild of America.
The script by Woody Allen and Marshall Brickman topped “Some Like it Hot,” “Groundhog Day,” “Airplane!” and “Tootsie,” which make up the rest of the top five. “Young Frankenstein,” “Dr. Strangelove,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and “National Lampoon’s Animal House” rounded out the top 10.
The awards for the 101 funniest screenplays were announced at the Arclight Cinerama Dome in Hollywood at the conclusion of two hours of panel discussions and clips, hosted by Rob Reiner. He noted that his “This Is Spinal Tap” script had finished at the No. 11 spot — a coincidence that recalled the “go to 11” amplifier joke in the film.

James Hughes, son of the legendary writer and director John Hughes, put together an oral history of Home Alone for Chicago magazine. In it, he reveals how the film ultimately found its director, Chris Columbus. After directing the 1988 flop Heartbreak Hotel, Columbus was worried about finding a new directing gig. Which is part of why he was so excited when Hughes thought of him for the sequel to the wildly popular Vacation — Christmas Vacation. Also, "To do a Christmas comedy had been a dream," Columbus tells Chicago. So he met with the film's star, Chevy Chase ..."Chevy treated me like dirt," Columbus explains. Needing a job, he began working on the film, shooting establishing shots (some of which can still be seen in the movie). But then he had another meeting with Chase that went even worse. According to Columbus, he then called Hughes and said, "There’s no way I can do this movie. »

So meta! A totally flattered Jessica Simpson hilariously reacted to Christie Brinkley's praise for her Halloween costume on Monday, Nov. 2. As fans no doubt remember, the supermodel had a memorable turn as the gorgeous blonde in the red Ferrari who [...] »

Fitting that John Candy's birthday was on Halloween, because it's downright scary to think he's been gone for 21 years. And yet, also fitting, the actor and funnyman's spirit lives on thanks to his instant-classic roles—be they big or small—in the likes of Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors, Home Alone, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and National Lampoon's Vacation. Candy, who passed away when he was only 43, would have turned 65 today. We'll try not to get too sad over what might have been; rather, since the Canadian-born star, who made his comedic bones in sketch comedy on Sctv, packed so many memorable moments into his too-short career, we'll focus on what we've »
Randy Quaid and wife Evi Quaid were arrested in Vermont on Friday night after attempting to cross from Canada into the United States, where they were deemed to be "fugitives from justice." The two had fled north of the border in 2010 after bench warrants were issued over their failure to appear at a hearing over a California residential burglary case, in which they were charged for allegedly squatting in a home, which they say they owned. The 65-year-old Independence Day and Vacation actor and his wife had said they sought refuge in Canada out of fear they will be killed for their money by "Hollywood star whackers." "On October 9, 2015, Randall Quaid »
Attention comedy geeks everywhere! To paraphrase a literary classic, this new documentary feature lets us all “look back in laughter” at one of the most influential humor magazines of the last fifty years. Actually its legacy reaches on past its newstand existence. Yes, it’s been absent from newsstands (there’s still a few of them left) for nearly twenty years. But, to paraphrase again, we’ve come “not to bury this magazine, but to praise it”. And to recall the chuckles and the mini-empire it spawned. Of course, this wasn’t the first humor publication. Puck paved the way decades before. Then Mad magazine shook up the staid 1950’s. But by 1970, that mag had somewhat settled into a (still entertaining) routine, poking fun at suburbia, and wasn’t connecting with the “counter-culture”. Younger “baby boomers” wanted their humor to have a sharper edge, to reflect the “hippie” spirit, and »

"The Eighties were good to me," says Jennifer Grey, and considering she's best known for having the time of her life with Patrick Swayze in 1987's Dirty Dancing, that would make sense. "You know those people who rock that hairdo from the moment they got laid the most in their life? The Eighties are a bit like that for me."

Get a comedy right on the big screen and you’re headed for Big Money City on a diamond-encrusted chariot pulled by golden geese. You’ll be the guy/girl who made the world blow hideously-priced popcorn and soda out their nose. And more importantly you can make several movies under the same banner and never be troubled by originality again.
Vacation was such a franchise, lasting so long it actually spanned the centuries between 1983 and 2003. Fuelled by the catchy theme song of Holiday Road by Lindsey Buckingham, the first instalment featured Clark and Ellen Griswold (Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo), just your average, confused, horny American couple looking to give their family the break of a lifetime at a Disney-inspired theme park. National Lampoon provided the source of the original series and now Warner Bros fancies another roll of the dice with a modern take on the concept. »
