Continuity: In the scene where Bobby is having his birthday party, there is a band playing a song onstage in Bobby's family backyard. The singer of the band is singing the song, but during the song he is dancing in circles away from the microphone, and his voice is still singing the part of the song, "La Duh Da Duh Da".

Loved that bikini

A good 10 years ago or so, I stumbled across an edited-for-TV airing of this movie on the Lifetime channel, of all places. I recall that the film felt awfully choppy — most likely from the excision of all the naughty bits. One scene survived: the tutor innocently bantering with her student at poolside, while modeling a deliciously tight, powder-blue bikini.

My Tutor gets lumped in with other early-'80s teen sex comedies, mostly because of its horndog attitude about breasts (bare and otherwise), mud wrestling and women's aerobics. Much of this comes via scenes featuring a then-unknown Crispin Glover, in the role of the loser best friend who is obsessed with shedding his virginity.

Then the tutor enters the picture, and everything shifts from good-time raunch to unabashed puppy love. What probably appeals to the Lifetime crowd is how the older woman (the likable Caren Kaye) is lovingly worshipped by her studly young lover — a fantasy of many housewives, one imagines. The tutor is a sexy, confident, mature, independent woman — and she's the dominant one in the relationship. And though the script calls for Kaye to be nekkid often, the camera treats her with reverence and awe. Can't say that for most other movies of this type.
