Dark, unique porno
25 December 2004 | by (Mountains of Madness) – See all my reviews

Originally credited to Richard Mahler, a pseudonym for Roger Watkins, the director of LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET (see my review), this "porno" is more a dark thriller with hardcore inserts.

A hit-man (Jamie Gillis) holds up in a sleazy Times Square hotel room waiting for his own Grim Reaper to visit.

A succession of rent girls visit Gillis in the interum as Watkins gives us intuitive flashbacks to the hit-man's miserable history and failed relationships.

Additional texture is provided by optically slowed street shots and choice close-ups of local bums and assorted scum.

The raincoaters must have ripped up the seats watching this one because it's not overtly erotic. There are some terrific sex scenes, mind you, but they're not the point here.

I'd love to see a really decent DVD release of this underrated classic.

The theatrical poster, a bluish image which shows a woman looking out over the city at night, is very artful.

The sound design is also deserving of a gold star, as is the bleak but appropriate cinematography.

Worth hunting down.
