This was apparently a pilot for an NBC sitcom. The network envisioned stand-up comedian Joel Hodgson as one of the stars of the proposed series. Hodgson turned the offer down.

In a scene where Beth (Nancy McKeon) tells Jay-Jay (Michael J. Fox) that she just wants to be friends, Jay-Jay replies, "Like Wally and Lumpy... I'll pass." Tony Dow and Frank Bank, who played Wally and Lumpy on Leave It to Beaver (1957), also appear in the film.

The cast is comprised of many former child stars. Tony Dow and Frank Bank from Leave It to Beaver (1957), who play the principal and Mr. Gerardi, respectively. Angela Cartwright from Make Room for Daddy (1953) and Lost in Space (1965) plays a teacher, as does Dwayne Hickman from The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959), and the school janitor is played by David Nelson, former star of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952).

The first of three Michael J. Fox movies, for which the late Composer Miles Goodman would write the score. The others were Poison Ivy (1985) (which also co-starred Nancy McKeon) and the surprise hit, Teen Wolf (1985).

Anthony Edwards, who plays the king prep Beau Middleton in this film, would play the opposite in the hit film, Revenge of the Nerds (1984), playing Gilbert the ultimate super nerd opposite Robert Carradine, which was a breakout hit for 20th Century Fox.
