As a fan of Australian cinema, I can see where the writers of this one were trying to go - but they didn't pull it off. The basic plot follows one night in the lives of four 20-something women before one of them is due to catch a plane to New York the following morning. It is an explorative, no-holds-barred expose on the seedy nightlife in Australia's biggest city, Sydney, and at times verges on gayploitation. Films of this type were rare in Australia in the early 1980's (although they were abundant in other parts of the world). Some themes and conversations have good qualities, but overall, the film is disjointed and even downright annoying - the inabilities of all four women to break their dreary habitual lives, all the while complaining about them, is perhaps close to the truth, but makes for uncompelling viewing. If you've ever seen HEAD ON, or even LIQUID SKY, this film is something like both of them...interesting at times, not for all tastes, but certainly not deserving of any special accolades. [Much of the entertainment is the spotting of future stars - if you get a chance to see it, look for Hugh Keays-Byrne (from KANGAROO, as a poetic cyclist), Aboriginal activist Gary Foley (from BACKROADS, as a dance coordinator) and Claudia Karvan (the star of DATING THE ENEMY and STRANGE PLANET, as a child whose toy panda is stolen near a chemist).] Score: 50/100
